A quick update on the conclusion of the Base Defense.
So pretty much we decided to camp the hallways. The aliens wandered around at the bottom and occasionally took hits.
TOO ALPHA TO BE MINDCONTROLLED
Occasionally we had to descend to kill off Sectoid Commanders who survive Overwatch and maintained line of sight of poor Jim Jones from the litle holes.

Idiot berserker climbs up, gets shot at, then jumps through the hole.
Then it shows up waltzing through the door next turn and receives a faceful of overwatch.
THE MECHTOIDS HAVE ARRIVED.

It was going to be a firefight of attrition.

The same thing happened to me. Three of my guys went to gene lab and one to psi lab, it left me a support and a MEC....with some poor guards. I immediately loaded the previous save file, kept my men in ready and when the base mission kicked in, I kicked alien nuts with full power.
And thus was how this LP turned out.

What's in the MEC Bay?
Assorted amounts of Sectoids, Mutons, Chrysallids. 2 Berserkers. 5 Mechtoids, and 3-4 Sectoid Commanders. The game just shows them all dropping in.
The Supports are useful for killing off Sectoids spamming Mind Merge. Not so great when they find Sectoid Commanders.
Integrity is pretty much the guy holding the defense together thanks to Bullet Swarm.

We look kinda cool. Scouting lets me avoid all the aliens.

Hunter Wilson tosses the Mimic Beacon for shits and giggles.
What happened next was one of the bigger regrets of this particular XCOM playthrough.
It basically dragged in ALL the aliens on the map.
However, it did fuck with their AI a bit. They prioritized moving towards the beacon over shooting me, although that wasn't always the case.
I found myself overwhelmed and flanked
Fortunately an upgraded Flamethrower and Titan Armor immunity makes for some sweet, sweet death traps
Hunter Wilson keeps missing because he's an unlucky sod, but luckily JIM JONES kept killing shit with his railgun.
Running kinda low on medkits, so I started resorting to Ghost moding to avoid counterfire.
It also didn't help that Sectoid Commanders now show up in pairs as support troops.
What do you do when you have no medkits and the highest chance of hitting the Sectopod is 40%? You let your toughest motherfucker on the team take hits, and then when he can't take anymore you send out the next highest HP guys in cover to take hits, and then you pray to the RNG and offer her a sacrifice of goats to ensure the team survives.

The only person with non-default equipment is Integrity.
At the moment we have RIkku, Integrity, Daigoji, and 3 XCOM Security Personnel (aka Rookies with ballistic weapons, grenades, and caps)
The Security Guards do jack shit. They kept missing, so I just ordered them to grenade spam
The initial wave consisted of a Mechtoid, a Berserker, a Chrysallid, a Sectoid Commander....a few Sectoids...
Reinforcements consisted of 2 Security Guards and Support Ho who can't do shit because he has no equipment and therefore can't use his 3-Medkit ability to heal so he's a little more than a glorified security guard at this point.
Daigoji's jetpack thrusters and FALCON PAWNCH come very handily for this mission
Rikku still manages to get decent results with a bolt action, but doesn't give me the kills I need.
Security Guards can receive promotions but they're still better off as meatshields.
Ho gets shot for almost all his health. He has no medkit so fuck.

Sectopods seemed to have been buffed. I also seem to have trouble doing damage to it. And it seems to fail in attacking: it fired rockets at the wrong area.
I like how Power Fists do only half damage to Sectopods, but when you kill ne with a punch it goes into a magnificent killing animation where the MEC just climbs the metal beast and punches it to death until it explodes and damages everyone nearby.
Welp, here's the Sectoid commander, and the line of sight in this section of the map is weird. I mean, look at that screenshot where PrincessK is next to the Mechtoid and she says she can't see him. FUCK

Berserkers also have special death animations when killed by a Kinetic Strike Module. They get punched, fall, and run themselves into the fist before exploding into blood

You have to have your team in control of the ship with overwatch before he presses the button. When he does then you have everyone hightail it out. Then keep one or two back a turn or two into running away to hit them with flamethrowers. It's how I did it. Only made it by a turn though.

I want that MELD, but if I move Princess K she'll grab the muton's attention. So, in one of the ballsiest troll moves in XCOM history, I order the entire squad to attack, and then Neil throws the ghost grenade to hide everyone in plain sight.
What I didn't count on happening was that despite being ordered to hunker down, Princess K activates Close Combat Specialist as the berserker runs past. She revealed herself, got mauled for a WHOPPING 2 damage, then gets shot for 8. As if that means shit, she has so much health it's not even fucking funny anymore.
I think Seekers move again after they go into stealth mode. Otherwise I'd see 2 dead Seekers.

I aborted my last three classic runs due to excess casualties.
After thinking about about it, I concluded that those runs lacked grenades, so everyone was issued one to use on the sectoids.
Now there has been no casualties on XCOM's side as of the fourth missions!
Yeah, I give the finger to Vahlen sometimes when she chastises me on excessive grenade use. Weapon fragments be damned.
Surprsingly, I have yet encounter the rescue VIP in China or defuse the bomb mission. And all of the UFO crash missions I have played are in the forest, where is the city site they promised?
You mean Operation Slingshot? If you didn't enable it when you begin a new campaign you don't get it. Also I've been getting city sites pretty often.
I got at least one city ufo crash mission, early enough that there were only 3 Sectoid pairs and an Outsider in it. Almost anticlimactic in how easy it was- I took way longer than was probably necessary and missed a meld container, but didn't suffer a scratch.
Also recently had to relearn just how bad an idea it is to rely on half-cover in a crowded firefight ugh

As earlier said, adaptive bone marrow and mimetic skin are the best ones. The former lets you survive protracted fights. As far as I can tell, unlike the MEC version, it doesn't have any limitations in terms of how many times it can apply, so as long as you're not caught by a crit anyone with it shouldn't end up dead unless you made a major fuck up. The latter lets your sniper avoid any damage at all so long as he maintains good cover.
Hell yeah. Flammenwerfers were the only things that saved me in the wharf mission where there are like a million of these damn things. MUAHAHAHA RUN FOOL

We're finally fighting EXALT elites. I don't know what gene mods they're packing that makes Dr. Vahlen winch, but I'm not going to stick around and find out. I bet their elite AI is just as suicidal as their grunt AI. If I charge in, I surmise my men will be sandwiched. So I stay back and keep them on overwatch while Princess K acts as my invisible eye.

All it takes is a slight millisecond of line of sight and you'll get shot from overwatch.
Knowing that they have heavies makes me even more cautious. As long as they can't see us they can't use a rocket because they'll always use their first turn to move/reposition.

Daigoji's extra ammo lets her destroy cover without needing to reload again next turn. Men without cover will die quite readily.
A lack of cover makes one prone to critical hits.

This is so damn true. In my only successful Ironman Classic I think I almost stopped losing men after I got some SHIVs on the field. I lost a good 3-4 SHIVs but who cares. It also allowed me to never train suppression on my supports or heavies, letting me carry MOAR rockets or whatever else is the better skill, and still have that valuable utility.
Hmm, I see. SHIVs also got buffed in EW and there's supposedly quite a few new techs for them.
Which gene seeds are the most important for my space marines? Oh, and the MEC is damn awesome, he has never skipped any mission, lol. I think trying the iron man mode is truly a mistake, those damn seekers kept targeting my sniper. If not for the awesome ability to cover a lot of ground of MEC, he should be death 2 times by now....the sniper was no longer the super cool killing machine anymore with those nasty aliens around.
I don't know, I haven't unlocked most of them yet. Adaptive Bone Marrow is probably a good one. Mimetic skin is also very good for scouting purposes and sometimes first strike spotting.

I think the civvies saved our asses. They acted as running bait before being inevitably turned into zombies.

EXALT enemy AI is maximum troll. They'll break out of cover just to shoot you in the back because they want your men dead. They know there's permadeath for you and they're willing to die just to take you with them.

So previously we were testing out new tools on EXALT.

The first things I researched were in my current, classical play through were: (this is my first)

I then realized I didn't have ten engies and so I am just waiting for an engie mission, but there not poping up!

I prefer longevity to killing power, my reasoning:
it doesn't matter whether you do 3 damage or 10 to a sectoid, they are still dead.
Also going for beams uses time that could be spent for other upgrades, like amor or plasma.
However you are troops sustain damage and needs to withstand crits.
So armoring up reduces wound time and give greater chance of people being promoted, increasing your overall firepower later on.

I think I've gotten the hang of using PrincessK's mimetic skin. The key part is stealthing her in the beginning (the EXALT defense had her unstealthed the whole time because she was in their line of isght the whole time) and sending her away from the rest of the squad as a scout. That way I know what to expect and can prepare for it.

Princess K runs out of shotgun ammo at the worst possible time. She whips out her pistol and proceeds to critical enemies. Because EXALT's AI mindset is "ZERG RUSH" they basically disregard safety and will run into the hacking zone to contest the encoder from XCOM's control.
This also activates PrincessK's Close Combat Specialist ability multiple times (and pistols don't need to reload) so basically the 2 idiots that ran past her either ended up dead or take enough damage such that another squaddie can kill them the next turn.

Integrity has been revived but unfortunately he fell onto an unclimbable box, which means he can't move anywhere for the rest of the level. He is essentially without cover and a sitting duck. Fortunately, he dodges bullets.

Honestly it really depends on what job classes you enjoy using and whether or not you're good at avoiding damage.
I haven't used the vests much in a while, but that's more because I enjoy the other items' effects so much than anything else. Also haven't played any higher than classic, not sure what really becomes invaluable as difficulty increases, though I've heard one guy (Impossible player?) say he put scopes on everyone no question.

2 medikits, one on a support with 3 use skill, one on somebody else just in case, because murphy's law always sees the support go down first, and only critically wounded (just to spite you).
Scopes on Heavies and Snipers, no questions asked.
Arcthrower in Support second slot when available, otherwise on second support, because dat fucking sprint for extra movespeed.
Assault... eh, whatever I need, probably one grenade, for clearing cover my heavies don't want to waste rockets on.
Early-game I hear in impossible you want those nanofiber vests because the gap between regular armor and carapace is just too long otherwise. I have not yet had the balls to attempt Impossible Ironman, so I cannot confirm/deny.

As the squad fights their way across the port, it becomes very clear that the source of the problem is from that ship. We also get a reference to Terror from the Deep.
I lost count of how many chrysallids got killed by this point.
Many eggs in a whale. Shit shit shit shit shit it spawns 1 chrysallid every turn, sometimes 3. The key tactic is to avoid line of sight. As long as the chrysallid doesn't see you, it'll waste the turn moving to find you instead of attacking, granting the guys a turn to reload. Weir is sent to activate the ship's transponder while everyone else is busy killing Chrysallids.
The situation is stable, I stayed my hand from posting too many shots of Chrysallids getting..well...shot.
This was the hard part. The game throws 3 chrysallids from the whale body and 1-2 more from the remaining shark bodies on the island.
You couldn't just dash out of there because the bastards run faster than you and they already have line of sight when they were spawned. I spent about 4-5 turns reloading and making a fighting retreat until I killed the bastards and then I began dashing because the respawning chrysallids couldn't see me once I got far enough from the whale carcass.
I got there RIGHT ON TIME.
Light up the dock.
With that number of kills, of course there'd be promotions.
Balcerzak gets more versatile, Daigoji gets more dangerous, PrincessK gets paranoid, Integ perpares for what's next, and Weir takes medical training

A new feature is the Medals system. As you play through the game, you gain the ability to unlock medal slots, customize their name, and pick from 2 choices the benefit of the medal.

Dr. Vahlen does research and unlocks items for Shen to make.
I order a satellite and a medikit. The former's importance will be explained later.
We're gonna take many losses. I put Vahlen to work on understanding Meld, though I doubt I have enough of it to do anything. Maybe I should've gone for Xeno Biology.
The game doesn't allow for empty last names, and after searching through the current roster I find 2 matches for our request list.
Balcerzak Balcerzak and Integ Rity are now on duty. The funny thing is that the RNG gave both of them the lowest aim (55!) out of the whole fucking team. As soon as other teammates promote to the right class and they are the right country, I'll add them in. This is assuming they survive.
