  1. Some of these cities in east Asia are also much more populated than New York. Like over twice (or in the case of Shanghai, thrice) the number of people. Though I got my cities mixed up. Suzhou only has a population of 4 million so it hopefully it won't be that bad.
  2. I doubt anyone particularly wants to live in the polluted environment. It's just a natural byproduct of having such a massive number of people living in the same industrialized area. Just to give an example, the city I'm moving to has twenty times as many people as the largest city in my home country. Or to put it another way, almost two and a half times the population of my entire country. People can complain all they want but the measures to actually fix such pollution aren't straight forward or easy. One hilarious attempt I heard of was a walk to work policy they enforced in Mexico City. They wanted everyone to walk to work one day a week so they made it illegal to drive you car on one random day. Unfortunately they did it by car instead of people so everyone just bought a second really cheap car rather than walking. As result of having so many bangers actively driving around the city it actually increased pollution levels dramatically.
  3. Are you aware of the Serenes Write Your Butt Off Competition?
  4. That's really what I want to know more than anything. I used to use Hola to access American versions of websites like Netflix but I got rid of it when I heard some controversy about them exchanging people's bandwidth for illegal purposes. I'm considering installing it again before heading over there despite the risks. Is expressVPN cheap/safe?
  5. Emmet raised an eyebrow at Charlotte. "I wasn't criticizing you. I just didn't notice you slip away. More than likely I was still focusing on the last brute who was cornered but still very dangerous. He probably would have blown half of us to hell and back had I been distracted."
  6. Moving to China (specifically Suzhou) to teach English for a year in two weeks time. Would appreciate any advice/warnings/suggestions/words of encouragement anyone might have for me.
  7. Maybe I should have stuck around to help with the healing Emmet thought to himself as he walked through the streets. Though I don't think anyone was seriously injured. They're a lucky bunch. Much luckier than that last group I was with. Let's hope that luck persists until we part ways. Very little seemed to have changed at the luck goose by the time Emmet arrived there. "Prince Owen, I'm surprised to see you're still here" he commented as he joined the group, a fresh bottle of vodka in hand. "I assumed you would have retreated back to the castle. And lady Charlotte, I didn't notice you leave us after the battle."
  8. Emmet acknowledge the princess' apology without saying anything. A nod, neither forgiving nor condemning her. "I'm going to leave the searching for the rest of you" he muttered as he turned to leave. "This place stinks and I don't have nearly enough alcohol in me right now. Emmet begins heading back towards the lucky goose.
  9. "God damnit woman" Emmet cried as the princess attacked him. "Calm down. He wasn't bloody well going to tell us anything. He was clearly about to attack and I'd rather stick an arrow between his eyes then let him take one of us down first. Specifically that one" Emmet pointed a finger at Ratty. "He was just about to gun it towards him. I'm not an idiot." Emmet ran his hand through his hair and calmed down. He supressed the urge to hit her back. "You know what I think is important? The fact that you're safe. I'd like some appreciation for the fact that I risked my life to help you when the sum total of our interaction until now has been six words. Now they were clearly using this place as some sort of base even if only temporarily. If you really want to figure out why this happened then let's get searching. We didn't exactly give them an opportunity to clean up and there's plenty of corpses here that might have some instructions on them."
  10. That's really the sort of stuff the Gaidens should have focused on in Shadow Dragon instead of slaughter half your army to get completely unimportant new characters (though admittedly Horace' story was kind of interesting and tied in nicely with the main plot. The others, not so much).
  11. Any recommendations to watch/play/read something obscure that I probably haven't heard of but is actually really good.
  12. "Enough of this" Emmet muttered. "My arm's getting tired." He launched his arrow directly at the man's heart. Kill or incapacitate, he didn't care either way.
  13. The fighting came to a close much quicker than Emmet dared to hope. However their leader survived despite his own best attempt, though the brute was in no fit state for fighting. Emmet quickly notched an arrow and pointed it at Stan. He was very tempted to loose it and put an end to the threat before him in an instead but his employer had just reemerged and thought it wiser to wait and see what she wanted to do with him.
  14. Doesn't seem like something worth spoilering. Unless they literally nuke Dorne at some point.
  15. Key example of how slowly those books are written, Book 3 took too seasons of the show while Books 4 and 5 were adapted in one season. Though some particular aspects of the adaptation *cough* Dorne *cough* were handled pretty poorly.
  16. "Figures" Emmen grunted as he loosened a magic arrow directly towards the one called Stan. Without even checking to see if he hit, he began loading notching another arrow from the quiver beneath his cape.
  17. Seeing that things were getting closer and the inevitable bloodbath, Emmet tried his hand at negotiating things peacefully. They now seemed to have an extra fighter on their side but he was still less than confident about getting out of here unscathe. "What exactly is is you want?" he asked the man known as Stan. "We just want to get a few of our companions who...wandered into your...quarters. Is it really worth risking your lives to stop us?" Emmet pulled the arrow back further and aimed it squarely at Stan. "I confess you might stand a chance at winning but what good is victory if you personally happen to be dead? Is it at all possible you can just let us fetch the girls and leave. Nobody needs to bleed over this."
  18. Emmet listened to the ratlike man as he explained what was going on. It seems the princess had been kidnapped and this witness was an acquaintance of Serge's for some reason. He followed the group as ratty led them to the thugs hideout. All in all he didn't like this situation one bit but the lady Adele was his employer now and first impressions were important. Unfortunately however as soon as they reached their destination she rushed off by herself leaving the rest of them to deal with the guards. He readied an arrow but didn't fire. This was exactly the sort of combat he didn't like. An archer in a wide open field was a useful asset, and even one on one their deadliness was unmatched provided there was some space. But in tight quarters against multiple foes he was near useless. If his aim was good he might hit one of them but that would mean nothing if the others got to him before he could reload. No, it was best to hang back and see what this Stan guy had to say to Ratty.
  19. Emmet hung back to help with the healing as the lady Adele rushed off. Fortunately there wasn't much to heal, it seems their little group's swift action dispatched the enemy with no casualties. Only the squire seemed out of sorts though that was probably as much the alcohol as injury. Emmet let out a sigh. He had only managed to get one drink in before all this started. AT least it meant he had a clear head. "I'm heading after the ladies" he told the rest of the group before rushing off. Adele was out of sight by now but he had little trouble following the trail even in the poor light. Living rough had forced him to learn some trades of a hunter. However the trail did eventually vanish. Fortunately the ladies Adele and Charlotte were unable to go any further either. They seemed to be in conversation with a witness. "What's happening?" he asked
  20. Mid conversation Adele scrambled out of her seat and beelined towards the door. Was that a scream? "Seems we'll have to continue this conversation some other time, lady Charlotte. Something is happening outside." Emmet rushed after his employer but found Serge blocking him in the doorway. "Move" Emmet grunted as he pushed past the boy. He didn't like to be so discurtious but something was clearly wrong. Outside he found Adele in combat with a rough looking fellow. The squire he had met earlier that day was also in combat. He drew Pinaka from beneath his cape and quickly readied an arrow. He dare not shoot near his allies in fear of hitting them so he launched at one of the other thugs that were clearly part of the gang. At this range not even he could miss, surely?
  21. Emmet scratched his chin. "Huh. Was it really that recent? I must have been in the priesthood at the time then. My memory is all a muddle. Good to see you alive and free regardless. I always like to support a free spirit. Though in your case serving out the sentence would probably have been wiser." He nodded at Adele. "What brings you into the company of my new employer?"
  22. The lady Charlotte interrupted Emmet's conversation with Adele. She was glaring at him defensively. "I recognise your face. I was serving in the military when you were arrested. It must be nearly six or seven years ago at this stage. It was quite a scandal at the time."
  23. Emmet glanced over at Serge and Angus preparing to drink each other under the table. He had been correct, the lady Adele did seem quite lax. He turned his head back to his employer. "My talents. Where to begin. I dabble in a little of everything. I suppose the most useful would be my ability with a stave. I notice your hand seems to be somewhat injured. I could try healing it for you if you like."
