  1. She sacrificed herself so that the Plegian's would suck up their rage, vaguely defined suffering and desire for revenge and instead take up arms against their own country. "See now that one selfless act has the power to change the world!" She planned all that. She expected that everyone would just turn against their own nation like it was the most natural thing in the world to do as long as you just give up on revenge.
  2. Nothing, because as we know Grima can just awaken his counterpart anyway through the power of bullshit.
  3. Giving a character nothing but praise, idealization and glorification by everyone but the dastardly, mustache twirling, puppy-kicking excuse of a villain, is giving the audience precise instructions on how they are supposed to feel about them.
  4. Oh yes, it was lots of fun. But considering that death is permanent, I wonder why the developer bothered to include a leveling system. If even your lv 30 Mami died, then your lv 1 Sayaka probably won't do much better. Unless of course you go through the earlier levels first, which is essentially the same as restarting the game. Maybe those mechanics make more sense in Multiplayer. Still, it was also a reminder how well suited the franchise is for a action game rather then a dungeon crawler like the official game did. I know the series already has dungeons and bosses that drop loot but there should be some room to include the action aspects too. Not that it matters as long as those games don't get localized.
  5. Trying to arrange situations which could result in boss conversations always factors into how I approach a chapter. Well, Ike definitely does. I don't remember about Soren but I don't see why he would be the only merc who won't move. If nothing stands in their way, they should make it just into Purge range. But maybe the two of them don't move on Normal. I never played that mode this far. If the amount of FE7's boss conversations impress you this much then maybe you should over think caring about the FE10 ones. Serenes Forest lists them on 3 separate pages. Two Pages of them make FE7's entire list look extremely tiny by comparison. If I count them one by one, I won't get to do anything else today but for an vague comparison I just copied the lists into Word. FE7 fills eleven pages with text. FE10 reaches 75 pages, though just barely.
  6. I don't think that reviving a character does necessary diminish the meaning that said death has. Like, take Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan for example. They killed of Spock, one of the greatest TV icons ever. But only temporarily as the movie's sequel would revive him. Yet regardless of that, his death is seen as a meaningful part of a damn well made piece of cinema. Now whether Emmeryn's particular death has a meaning in the first place is besides the point. You definitely won't see me defending that. Other Awakening characters like... Kellam? I don't understand what praise you mean but either way, Emmeryn is a main character. You can't compare that to PC's who don't even have a speaking role after they join. Unlike them, the stuff she does is supposed to actually matter.
  7. I so have to disagree about that. At least on a fundamental level. Because there is so much potential in brining her back. Like, she was a big influence on Chrom and he was very troubled about living up to her example. Seeing her react to the things he accomplished could more then make up for the idiotic circumstances that would be required to cause such an opportunity. Of course she only supports with the Avatar, so all that potential goes to waste. She is not even the same person anymore, what with having no memories and all.
  8. Her "sacrifice" was nothing but a glorified suicide and it's effect can only be explained through magic. You can't even say that the sacrifice was to save Chrom from having to decide between his sister and the Emblem because she proclaimed that she would show that a "selfless act has the power to change the world". She planned all that ridiculous stuff. As for all the praise, that's the way Emmeryn is handled. The game idealizes her to an embarrassing degree, yet the praise she gets is shallow and her actions reflective of nothing. Like, remember when she was introduced? Frederick: The exalt is a symbol of peace—Ylisse's most prized quality. Long ago, at the dawn of our age, the fell dragon tried to destroy the world. But the first exalt joined forces with the divine dragon and laid the beast low. Exalt Emmeryn reminds us all of the peace we fought for then. Chrom: With Plegia poking at our borders, the people need her. She's a calming presence, when some might otherwise call for war. Robin: Then the Ylissean people are indeed lucky to have her. Lissa: She's also the best big sister anyone could ask for! Let me summarize what we learned about her in just these few lines: The Ylissean people are lucky to have her because she is a symbol of peace, a reminder of the peace that other people fought for, a calming presence and the best big sister anyone could ask for. Lots of praise but with very little substance. Well, except for that "voice against war bit". But remember, said war would be against a nation which is already actively attacking her people.
  9. That would be grade-A trolling if Rayman really was turning out to be a character. Though, given that there is supposed to be a character reveal today, it's probably trolling either way. Anyway, the idea of third party trophies for characters of unrelated franchises is pretty weird. Edit: Man, I am really not paying attention. Ubisoft? What do they have to do with Smash?
  10. Part 1 is just a repeat of PoR's storyline anyway. That much is aknowledged by Elincia in Part 2, who described the resemblance as "almost unnatural" and according to Bastian a hint to assume that somebody is pulling their strings. I'm of the opinion that Ashnard should have been defeated as early as at the Daein capital, followed by the events of Part 4. The rest of PoR and RD Part 1-3 seem pretty pointless to me. Part 2 is great but it doesn't have much to do with the rest of the game.
  11. Enemy Summoners worked quite well back in TRS. They were indeed interesting enemies to fight. Every Summoner can summon three monsters at once and this monsters can move immediately after they are summoned. Since you can look in their inventory to see what they will summon, they are never unfair. ...unlike the reinforcements in certain other DS and 3DS games. I especially hate love Harpie summons. As flying bow users, they make it difficult for other fliers to approach the Summoner or any other target in the area.
  12. I married Chrom because I figured it would be beneficial for the story.
  13. It's a shame that summoning appears so rarely since it was introduced in Gaiden. Especially in Tear Ring Saga, I appreciate the ability to distract enemy catapults and hidden archers with disposable meatshields.
  14. I guess the thing in the upper right image is supposed to be a plane but to me it looks more like M.Bison doing the Psycho Crusher.
  15. Greil. No contest. Obviously the guy had "gets killed in the first act to make room for his kid" written all over him but the execution was flawless. He had been around for a while, acting as the leader of the group. As a result, when he wasn't around anymore, we really felt the hole he left behind. And man, did they sell his death. The funeral scene and the group breaking apart afterwards. Mist refusing to stay hidden so she can die together with her brother. And more subtly done, she and Rolf enter the battlefield after a night that taught them just how easily their family members could vanish if they weren't around to protect them. Every single member of the group is shown being impacted by this event. And that is only in the first chapter after his death. He actually stays a presence during the rest of the story. There are quite a few scenes related to him that leave quite an impact. Like Mist and Jill's A support or Ike using the words that his father used to address his little group: "At a time like this, it doesn't matter what our blood ties are. We are family. So if you don't want to cause your family any grief, then live!". Except the people that Ike called his family included members of every nation, ever race and every social status. It showed just how meaningful the impact Greil had on the world, that it was ultimately because of him that Ike was able to change the world. And this came not from his role as a legendary general and unbeatable swordmaster but from his far more humble role as a father, friend and leader of a small group of mercenaries.
  16. Maybe it's just the voice direction that is to blame for his performance. I mean, I don't know how good Adkins is but I would assume that he would have at least tried to sound like a child when voicing young Ike in his memory scene in RD unless the voice direction was handled so badly that he wasn't even told that he was supposed to voice a little kid there.
  17. While a lot of mad scientists are probably based on him in some way, Izuka is probably more then most examples directly based on Mengele. I mean, he is experimenting on those the Daein call "sub-humans" in a place that the game frames like a concentration camp. Also, while mad scientists are usually to some extend comic relief, Izuka is most certainly not. The narrative treats his crimes as so vile that almost everyone he fights make it clear that they are going to execute him on the spot. It was the same in PoR when everyone who saw the basement of the tower was absolutely horrified. Nobody knew about Izuka back then but it's clear that they all consider these crimes beyond forgiveness.
  18. You can't actually recruit Altenna in chapter 8. Only in chapter 9. So you haven't actually missed out on her yet. Sorry, I misunderstood this. I fear I'm not of much help here.
  19. Grado. I guess the army that was already forced into the defense by Innes before the start of the second act is a bit of an odd choice. But I really like how intelligently they approached their goals. They started a Blitzkrieg against Renais, and took capital in no time flat. Afterwards, they didn't waste any time and used their momentum to strike against Frelia. This works so well that they are already attacking Frelia's borders before Eirika and Seth manage to cross them. Of course, that didn't work out too well for them in the long run but their goal were the Sacred Stones, not world domination. Conquest is only one way archieve that goal. So when Frelia won the upper hand against them, they switched to Plan B and send a commando team past their borders to destroy Frelia's sacred stone. They also made preparations to overthrow the remaining nations early on. It worked like a charm in Jehanna. Fortunately the same didn't happen in Rausten because Riev is apparently kinda lazy. Despite being told early in the game to take care of Rausten, he only makes his move late in the game when Ephraim's group is around to throw a wench into his plan. The Demon King would have won if Riev didn't pull a Manfroy there. The only other thing that makes you question their competence is Lyon's decision to rely on Valter. This guy turned out to be a totally unreliable wild card and probably ended up harming Grado more then helping them. But overall they are a very cunning foe.
  20. My idea for s04 would be a scene that shown the mercs arriving at Begnion and they look around and see the city, it's people and naturally the Tower of Guidance Since Begnion's history, society and traditions are what drives the plot in the following chapters, I believe it would have been a good idea to start that part of the story by allowing players to really take in the city. Besides, it's a shame that this cool city design is only seen in a single low res image. For the others, to be honest I think that these cutscenes might not have actually been intended to show anything that was in the finished game at all since I do find the story structure in PoR a bit weird. The revival of Serenes Forest should be the end of the second act of the story, leaving only the big finale. Yet there are still tons of chapters left. The game had a really tight story up to this point but after that chapter the game starts to really drag out. A theory of mine is that Part 4 of Radiant Dawn is based on what was original intended to be the third act of PoR. Ashnard was originally going to be defeated earlier in the game. For example at the Daein capital since this is were the awakening of Yune and Ashera happened in RD. The real showdown would occur at the Tower of Guidance until it was decided to reserve that part for another console game, leaving PoR with a third act that is mostly filler and doesn't have a particular epic conclusion... and by extension Radiant Dawn with three parts that only seem to exist to get the story to a point were PoR already was. So I could imagine that they planned cutscenes that show Ashera waking up and turning the people to stone or show the Tower of Guidance in it's golden light when the survivors approach it.
  21. The difficulty is nothing too special but this game really taught me to actually use Jeigans as tools rather then trying to have them avoid combat whenever possible. The balance of the game is completely out of whack for countless reasons but surprisingly enough it works out in a way that is still fun. Like, Ike's team being so much stronger then the Dawn Brigade simple means that their respective maps have a different flow to them. Well, unless you are playing easy. Then Ike's team is plain invincible. And Hard Mode is a true pleasure to play since at that point the strengths and weaknesses of the individual classes really start to shine. It's probably my favourite hard mode. I just wish I could take Ike's Leadership Stars off and make him weaker.
  22. You are also not going to know what weapons and skills individual soldiers have and yet the game makes these informations available. Also, how come enemies never get the first turn even in ambush scenarios where they should have the initiative? "Real life" does not make for good gameplay. Especially when that means that the game is randomly killing you. And that's exactly what this is. Warning or not, it always ends in a gamble since there are way too many unknown variables to deal with. You might as well put instant-kill tiles on the map. Just knowing that they exist won't help. Because of this bullshit mechanic, it's good that FE12 had save points. Under these circumstances, I made extensive use of them. But save scumming to victory is no fun either, so I probably simply won't play that game again. It's a shame too since this game got the proper overhaul that Shadow Dragon was missing.
  23. Occasionally. I find the option of rigging the dice to be way too tempting when it is so easily available at any time. Fortunately I do find it easy to ignore it in RD since I never quite fully internalized that the option is even there.
  24. I have the opposite impression. Everything but Part 4 feels like filler. Like it only exists in order to get the story to the point were PoR had already been. Just that this time around it's way dumber, painfully contrived and overall worse. And the name of the game is "Goddess of Dawn". Or "Akatsuki no Megami" as the case may be. So by all appearance, Part 4 is what the game is all about. It's nothing short of the cornerstone of the story. No matter how badly it may be executed, Part 4 cannot actually be filler. But it definitely doesn't help that we got this crappy abridged script. I can only advice everyone to read all the available translations from the extended script that we have on this site. It greatly improved my opinion on the story. I can't imagine that it could save Part 1 and 3, though. Not only that but the localization also felt the need to completely change the dialogue between Ike and Yune is the Epilogue. Our version has nothing to do with the Japanese script... and the entire rest of the game for that matter. I mean, how do you turn this... Ike: You were like a mother to all of life-- Your children still require a mother like you. When you watch over us, we don't always do things that make you happy and sometimes we even disappoint you. Still, I think we would like you to continue watching over us. How about it? ...into this: Ike: It's true, we don't have much use for gods. But, well... You show us what we should aspire to. We need inspiration. You give us a reason to grow. To become more than we are. And if we don't have that, Yune, we're nothing more than statues. See? "Inspiration"? On of the main themes of part 4 was how the gods were no less flawed then their creations: Yune: We did create life, and can do many things that you creatures of flesh can't. But that doesn't make us perfect. It just means we can make mistakes on a much grander scale... We're not what you've been taught, and we're much closer to you skin-wearers than some will admit. But we do make mistakes... Sometimes we make terrible mistakes. Sometimes all it takes is one emotional outburst, and the entire world is drowning underwater! ... Sephiran: Hatari. I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to see it. The wolf tribe has survived all this time in the far corner of the world. Only the goddess could have known that. Nailah: Perhaps even she didn't know it. Your goddess isn't perfect, you know. Does an imperfect goddess have the right to judge imperfect beings? ... Yune: People are probably the dumbest creatures alive. But... Somehow you're also the most endearing. It's your imperfections that make you so interesting... Imperfections very similar to ours. ... Kurth: Goddess Ashera, please listen to me. We know that we are clearly imperfect, but you, unnaturally created of pure order... Might that not be considered an imperfection? Ashera: No, I am perfect. Free of emotion, I have no doubts. Therefore I commit no errors. ... Yune: But it would be difficult... Could we really coexist? Does it not bother you that I'm an imperfect being? Ike: You forgave all the mistakes that we made, so how could we not forgive you. In this setting, the gods are a very poor source of "inspiration". So the English version of the Epilogue has not only nothing to do with the rest of the game but it's hilariously out of place too. But the Japanese version... well, one of the main themes of the entire Tellius series is family. Not only family by blood but especially the sense of family between all living things, regardless of race, social status or any other heritage: Ike: At a time like this, it doesn't matter what our blood ties are. We are family. That's what my father always used to say. And today...for the first time... I understand why he said it... Because we are a family. So if you don't want to cause your family any grief, then live! ... Naesala: I'm only joking. Don't get so defensive. Micaiah: Then don't insult my family. Naesala: Hmph. You say he's your brother, but there's as much resemblance between you two as between me and Skrimir. ... Mist: Everyone in the Greil Mercenaries is part of a family. We all follow the commander, no matter what. We'll live together, fight together, and die together. Right, Ike? ... Elincia: As you said, Lucia and the others are very important to me. They are family ... Rolf: I have my family, Oscar. You, Boyd...everyone in the Greil Mercenaries. I don't need anyone else. Why should I let her try and change that? (Rolf is talking about his mother, btw.) ... Sanaki: Will I... never see you again? Micaiah: Hardly. I think that what our countries need now is a sense of family and friendship. So connecting this giant family through Yune as the "mother of all life" makes perfect sense.
