You should get more warrior monks. Including some Naginata How many troops do you have all together? Because looking at Kyoto, you'll just have to use quantity *coughespeciallyofwarriormonksthankstoawesomerangecough* to win. Altogether? With Takahisa's army I have about 3000-something. Of course I should be able to support another 1700 elite troops with my current income......but if anything happens I do have the Black Ship fleet available to pick up Yoshihisa and take him back home for safety. Annnnd lol Warrior Monks. Well they probably can do a number on those samurai archers.... Edited March 23, 2011 by skitarii
IGdood
The following is a huge update that should consist of 5 posts. It'll probably take me 2 hours to do. Maybe 1. Vassals are practically a necessity now to prepare for the Realm Divide. They will never betray you, unlike the Chosokabe, who may or may not backstab me. Also, vassals give you half their money and also build up their own armies to protect you. I can expect no trade income from the Realm Divide because of the all the enemies I will have, but perhaps I can force my vassals to trade with me? Fuck you, Date. Et tu, Chosokabe? Tango is mine! After the Realm Divide event, every clan will receive -5 per turn in diplomatic relations with you. That means it'll only be a matter of time before the Chosokabe betray me. Clans created after the Realm Divide in the form of vassals, like the Yamana clan I liberated, will not receive such a diplomatic penalty. However, if I break my alliance with them, they will immediately declare war on me no matter what. The recent conversion by the Chosokabe has some of their provinces rebelling due to religious unrest. I immediately scoop up what I can. As the eventual betrayal by my allies looms closer, these "friendly" armies are more of a threat than of assistance.... I build my own legendary archery school, but since I am not the first one to build it, I do not receive any bonuses. Now I can train my Bow Hero. It's like having Rolf and Shinon on your team. Taking a rebel province that used to belong to the Chosokabe... Eh, what's one more clan in my pile of enemies? The Hattori are back, and ready for war......screw 'em all. Before those ninja wannabes can even do anything, I launch a full-on assault on their one and only province. Yoshihisa delivers a few nice lines. The katana hero will lead some ashigaru in a backdoor attack. Everyone else will wait around for something to happen at the front door. You gotta admit, the Hattori have some nice colors. Moving up steadily... Like I usual, I move up Rewjeo's Monks to bait the enemy out by shooting them. The Arrer Boyz will fire when the enemy runs out of the gates. I run the matchlocks up since they have a shorter range, hopefully to deliver a volley that will kill off most of those archers. They run, sucks for them. I'll have the kisho ninja run up and climb the walls (which they're really fast at doing) and capture the gates so as to stop those damned towers from firing arrows and so my men can just walk in. I expect the ninja to take heavy casualties, but they should be able to get the job done. Meanwhile, the monks continue to shoot at the ashigaru on the walls. Seems like every Hattori archer out there is targetting my ninjas, who are capturing at a pretty quick rate. I order my own ashigaru up the ramp. Capture one, capture the other....get shot at....all in a day's work. Now the fort tower is working for me, and is firing at the Hattori. Now, for the second set of gates, I have no choice but to climb up there. At least I'll lose less men than if I had them climb two sets of walls, which will also cause much fatigue. Now the bow ashigaru are dueling....we'll see who falls first. Mine do. =( Get up there and kill them all! Don't die like those Caelin Knights! Time for the samurai to move up. They won't have a gate open for them. Climbing up the second set of walls...... Samurai climbing the first set on the other end and meeting with heavy resistance. I don't know how the bomb throwers and matchlocks can help, but I move them up regardless. Siege battles always seem so epic... I move up the Arrer Boyz once I'm certain they won't be shot at....and let them have their way with the Hattori. The bomb throwers nuke a section of the wall, along with men on both sides getting knocked out of the walls and onto the ground below. Woops. IGdood
The Arrer Boyz should be safe here. I hope. I wanted to move the bombers around to get a better throwing angle, but then that tower started shooting them...which wasn't good. But at least I could shift my bow ashigaru to a better angle so they can shoot at the Hattori fighting with my samurai. They're still not dead? Damn. What a clusterfuck. The enemy are in full retreat to the top level of the castle. I hurry my nodachi samurai over to carve them up. Take that, Hattori! Another vassal, coming right up. Ha, they don't hate me. BOW HERO GET Who's this? +41 with the Chosokabe. That means I have about 8 turns left before they start having a chance to betray me. Urgh...the Satome move their forces to Kyoto in an attempt to protect it. Luckily for me, the Chosokabe obliterate them the next turn. I change out a unit of bow ashigaru for the bow hero. That's a looooot of Chosokabe forces. Well, this is a good chance for me to recruit more matchlocks... Dammit.... Oh well, Takahisa can put them down. I send an ashigaru army to besiege Kyoto for the lulz. They will be backed up by Yoshihisa. Hooray...now I can build a legendary spear dojo. If I build it first, which I most likely will, then all yari-wielding units will have a permanent +2 defense. You have failed me, Hattori. This battle.....will be one of life and death. The ashigaru army will deploy here. Reinforcements from Yoshihisa's army will back them up or try to form a new flank attack. Bow hero on the field. Do I have a chance at defeating these guys...? Satomi reinforcements....damn. I have faith in my archers.... I run up some yari ashigaru to draw their fire. It works horribly, and I slap myself for this mistake. Die please. Stop running away dammit! I rush up some naginata to plug up those katana samurai, while the bow ashigaru duel with the other samurai archers. It's not looking very good. Meanwhile, the bow hero stays back and let's loose a volley every 1.5 seconds.
IGdood
I wish I had more melee units right now... As my forces rout, more reinforcements come. Huggers to the enemy archers, go go go! Their general charges my yari ashigaru!? I'm actually not too happy so many reinforcements are moving to the field. That means my forces are getting wiped out fast. The katana huggers get swarmed. I try to call them back but its too much. Yari huggers...chaaaaaaarge! Even though the charge killed many, the enemy samurai are just either to experienced or their archers really love to shoot anything that's on a horse. I lose a lot of cavalry. Arrer Boyz to the field, not sure what they can do now... Oh come on no wavering now! This is a disaster. Give 'em hell! Nevermind, they're giving us hell! Meanwhile, the Arrer Boyz get caught by a bunch of katana samurai and are reduced to chopped boyz. The katana hero's disciples put up an epic last stand and refuses to run. They all die. Fucking enemies...are still coming in strong. I forgot that the Kisho ninja also carry their own brand of bombs. They nuke the above katana samurai and my yari ashigaru. I think I have no chance of winning right now. I hope that the yari ashigaru don't run away and hopefully can tie up the archers in melee. Hopefully. They are promptly obliterated and run the fuck out of there. My bow hero also receives a faceful of cavalry charge....offscreen. I have no choice but to withdraw. We'll be back, you fucks. What use is the defeat if the enemy can replenish their numbers by the next few turns? Oh boy. All katana samurai + hero obliterated. Naginata annihilated. All huggers killed. All archer units (save for Rewjeo's monks and some lucky ashigaru) suffered heavy losses All yari samurai butchered. Fuck my life. Our green tide has been stopped in its tracks. This will really help when I get to yari/bow ashigaru spamming.. Takahisa's army moves down, ready to attack Kyoto once more. Yoshihisa is still alive....good thing. Immediately he gathers more men from the province. Back at home, I move over a navy to transport new elite replacements. My ninja is executed after his attempt to continue sabotage. Can it get any worse? Chosokabe betrayal imminent... Takahisa besieges Kyoto. While Yoshihisa's move to Omi and conquers it, and puts in the vassal clan of the Asai. And I order them to join me in the Realm Divide. I don't think you should marry again, Takahisa. Here we go. This is it. With Chosokabe assistance I can win this. So that's where the Ashikaga Shogunate resides? Takahisa delivers some fitting lines.
Rewjeo
NAGINATA MONKS I find it ironic that they Chosokabe are about to join the other side immediately after dealing it such a (presumably) crippling blow...
IGdood
That is one big citadel. Let's begin. I start off by sending two units of Bow Ashigaru around the bow samurai so I can shoot at them without them firing back. it works. The Chosokabe...seem to be doing what? I shift my whole army over. Charging across that bridge is just asking for death. This one's for the Arrer Boyz you dicks! What the hell are the Chosokabe doing? I position my samurai behind my archers. They'll be ready to charge forward. Chosokabe assaulting with their....archers? The Ashikaga finally get around to shifting their archers around. It's time to assault. I send my yari ashigaru to climb up and another group to break open the gates. This gate shall burn! Everyone else move up! INSIDE NOW! The yari ashigaru rout but who cares, I've got enough samurai. FOR YOSHIHISA'S FAAAALLLLEEEEENNNN!!!!!! NO MERCY! KILL. Archers, get in there and cover our samirao and monks! GRENADES I maneuver the bomb throwers around, throwing when there's a good opening. And the Chosokabe are in their little corner. They must be thinking of betraying us right after. They don't want to help. FUCK THEM. PRESS ONWARD! KILL EVERY ASHIKAGA BASTARD YOU SEE After clearing up the lower tier of the castle, it's time to move my battered forces up. A particular arrow tower is being a threat to my limited forces. I get the bomb throwers to destroy it.
IGdood
The bomb throwers keep on going, despite all the yumi bows trained at them. NO. WAVERING. DAMN YOU. Tower destroyed! With all my infantry spent, it was time to move up Takahisa and the Huggers attached to his unit. Covering fire! NOW! Just...a little more! Out of arrows? Well pull that katana out and get climbing! FOR THE FALLEN HUGGERS OF YOSHIHISA! Capture the Tenshu! (Keep) I can take you both on! The katana huggers celebrate, having dealt their vengeance. Particularly cool finishing move where a bodyguard stabs backwards into an enemy. Cursed Chosokabe...they left us to fight on our own. I THIRST FOR CHOSOKABE BLOOD. KYOTO. IS. OURS. Now I must hold it. A new hero is born. The Chosokabe don't like us. And the bastards sabotage our library. FUCK THEM Legendary Yari School is ours! Holy shit level 8 ashigaru right off the bat? YES. Navy is on the way with reinforcements. Oh shit, the Chosokabe are starting it. I decline to enter this one, since I thought it was just the Asai being targetted. Except they're going after my vassals now. Chosokabe....I have no choice but to make you my enemy. All these years of trust.....no more. And the nerve! They go after one of my provinces. I defend it. And the Asai declare war on ME after I didn't enter the war on their side. I think all of Japan is in chaos right now. Tadazumi got one too many STDs. Do I still have a chance of winning this campaign? I don't know. We shall see. I have minimal trade income, making only 100 gold per turn. I either must reduce the size of my armies, or I conquer more lands. The choice is clear. Battle track. IGdood
Nope. Deaths from the towers aren't counted in the kills made by the Ashikaga, and Chosokabe deaths are counted as my own. Also, obligatory battle track. Edited March 24, 2011 by skitarii

IGdood
Inspires other nearby units, has the anti-horse capability of the yari but also the fighting ability of the katana. Basically the hero version of cavalry, heheh. The full host of the enemy is arrayed against us today, lads! Let them come, I say! They are as nothing to our emerald legions, the same legions that have broken this land in twain! There is no grey, men! There is only Good! And there is only Evil! The Evil Must Be PURGED! To die honourably...or to rule this land for a dynasty that will last throughout the ages! You SHALL be remembered in history! We fight against mere footnotes! To the fight, then! LET'S BE 'AVIN' YER! Furetchen, you are an amazing writer. For that, I'm inspired to give an update. I realized that Yoshihisa's army couldn't move anywhere thanks to these Chosokabe scum. Battle time! He also delivers a few rightfully-deserved insults. Since I have so many archers, I pretty much just placed all of them in one line and send them forward into the forest, where they can hide. Since I don't want to move my perfectly set up position, I send forth the Bow Hero, Matthew, to snipe at the Chosokabe archers. His 200 range is perfect. Funny enough, the enemy did not respond to the continual pelting, and all of their archers are summarily annihilated. Unfortunately, Matthew and co. ran out of arrows, so I promptly retreat him. Next up were the Bow Monks. But the Chosokabe finally stopped shitting bricks and decide to charge into the forest. My archers spring out of hiding and shoot. Whereas the yari ashigaru intercept their general before anything can happen. They also happen to get bombed. Unfortunately some light cavalry have caught Yoshihisa, and they have a bonus against fighting cavalry. I was fearful Yoshihisa would die, but he survived to fight another day thanks to a daring rescue by the Kisho ninja. Victory. Poor Yoshihisa. Meanwhile, I conquer undefended Chosokabe lands to increase my income. I also put reinstate old clans and make them my vassals, for I can then make trade agreements with them, which will provide a lot of income. I didn't realize I've held out Kyoto for a year. I am now shogun...and all in the lifetime of the first man, Shimazu takahisa. Amazing. He's 73 now. Unfortunately, I'm also gifted several unique units which suddenly put my income into the red. I then proceed to increase taxes and disband some useless units and ships. Also, this is an interesting dilemma...which I could not afford. The Hattori wipe the Asai off the map. Ew... Hellbent on conquest, revenge is a must against the Chosokabe. Ah, a new cavalry unit only available after I become Shogun. This is the great guard, the hero version of cavalry. They're like yari cavalry, except much more powerful and having some of the staying power that katana cavalry have, meaning that they are still decent whilst fighting in a melee after the charge bonus has worn out. They can also inspire nearby units to be less tired. Conquer. Conquer....Conquer. This is another unique unit received from being Shogun. This is a Nihon Maru, otherwise known as a three-story castle that floats on water. Holy shit dude. Teamed up with the Black Ship, I'll only ever need 2 navies. One to attack, one to defend the trade routes. Cheaper buildings are always nice. Turning the black territories into green territories....Almost out of that debt. IGdood
How do you like that, Chosokabe? Why let my navy stand idle? I'll go out to actively hunt Chosokabe ships. Wow...the Nihon Maru is huge.....well not as big as the Black Ship, but still... Trololol the crew on the Black Ship are now all Japanese....and wielding matchlocks. Chosokabe ships inbound! Bomb kobaya blows up an incoming Sengoku Bune, Black ship snipes at other ships while the Nihon Maru's archers let loose arrow after arrow. I win without so much as press a button. Meanwhile, the replacement elite reinforcements have arrived, finally. Yay gunpowder mastery..... For the heck of it I blockade a port. Takahisa dies happy, having been shogun for a few seasons.....Yoshihisa is a daimyo now. And his son comes of age. Tomokata also dies... Yoshihisa's son is a bit old to start out as a general... As soon as I wipe out the Chosokabe on the mainland I'll be launching a naval invasion on their island. Annnnd suddenly I'm out of money, for some reason. Lololol Another son comes of age eh? A few trade agreements with my vassals later, and my income soars. Blegh. Hm, I kinda like Nobutane's portrait. Nice. Wow...the Chosokabe really are honorless. They looted and burnt my province. Meanwhile, they seem to be amassing a force close to Kyoto... Now I can unlock the final tier of ships... I decide to shift my research over to the Chi side....since I need to upgrade my temples. IGdood
Whoa, hero calvary! Uh, if no one can think of a better name, they're Tino's Horsemen! Okay then. 'Kay, dibs on... something else while we're all claiming a bunch of super awesome units. The Chosokabe turning on you is actually probably beneficial. You get more land and more vassals. It's always the super units that get claimed, but trust me, they're not too super if used poorly. Well I wouldn't have needed that land and vassals if they didn't, and it was a gamble. I could've lost every siege battle afterwards since I was doing all-out attacks. But I guess it's a turn for the better, so I can't argue there. By the way, I forgot to mention this earlier, but an enemy light cavalryman threw his spear into one of Yoshihisa's bodyguards, knocking the guy off his horse and killing him. He then proceeded to ride over casually and pick his spear back up before taking a sword into his chest from the kisho ninja. It was epic. EDIT: UPDATE TIME Previously on Shogun 2 Total War, Yoshihisa was busy securing the mainland before the idea of invading the Chosokabe could be mentioned. Meanwhile, some assholes decide to assault Kyoto. I bid them welcome. The Satomi split up all their forces, perhaps trying to throw me off. Well, I have same archers covering the outer walls, but once they cross the moat I'll have them retreat back to the inner ring. Cavalry in the water are easy pickings for arrows. They're in the water.... Fall back! Notice I left one group of archers out. I'm wondering if the AI will try to beat the shit out of them and thus waste their time and eat some arrows. Lol at katana samurai routing even before they reached the outer ring of the walls. While all the archers are busy shooting crap, the bomb throwers nuke whoever gets into range, which is kinda often although for some reason they're only killing about 1 or 2 men per volley. Either the Satomi are wearing force fields or I'm missing something. I always find burning my enemies to be a beautiful site. I'm not going insane, am I? Poor archers left in the outer ring. You will be remembered for your sacrifice. Thanks for buying us about two more minutes to fill the enemy ashigaru with arrows. After much running around, the enemy finally scales the inner walls. Their numbers have been completely thinned out. These veteran yari ashigaru can seriously stand up to even katana samurai, their weaknesses, given that they're using yari wall and are in a defensive position. Like right now. The minimal damage bomb throwers throw their grenades at whoever seems to be far from my own troops. The enemy runs without much of a fight. Good riddance. So, they lost about 600 due to the tower arrows. Meanwhile, someone besieges Osaka castle somewhere, but they were beaten back in an untaken screenshot. Extra unit defence? Sure. Everyone's attack is high enough already. As I was saying, Yoshihisa was besieging the province with a name I can't remember. It's not Izumo. Anyways the Chosokabe scum are sallying out....with an almost pure archer army. I think I know how to beat up this group of ranged units. Yoshihisa delivers a humorous taunt. Lololol. These are the Great Guard. They look a bit like the yari cavalry.....wait actually...I need to put them side-by-side to tell the difference. However, I switched out the Spear Cretins. Their archers are making one big line. I don't have that many ranged units to fight back with, so I will negate their ability to fight me with their archers. Massive charge on all frnts, we'll see how you like that. Tino's Horsemen and the Pineapple Huggers take to the left flank. The kisho ninja will hide at the right flank. My own archers will be in loose formation just in case they get targeted. The yari samurai will hit their lines first since they have the Rapid Advance ability, but each yari unit will have a katana/naginata unit backing them up in case the Chosokabe's katana samurai decide to carve up some of my yari units. All ranged units will shoot at whichever archer unit isn't tied up by my melee units, which will be plenty. This is the plan. Sounds good? Alright, go go go. Arrer Boy: Oi, let's have a bit of computishun on who kills teh most, eh? Monk: -bows- -strings bow- Did I mention that the kisho have a stealth ability that lets them stay invisible even whilst running/charging up to an enemy? GO. CHARGE! Unfortunately, the pineapple huggers don't have such an ability, and they take so many fire arrows it kills off almost half their unit. They exact vengeance in a moment, carving up their own share of archers. The plan works so far. Some of the bow ashigaru are so freaked out by the charging they're wavering. Meanwhile, the no-dachi samurai use their Banzai ability, which raises their offensive power by a huge amount. They're great in charging up enemy infantry, but they suck at staying alive, like FE Berzerkers. To be honest, I really don't know what I can do with the bomb throwers in battles like these. Their range is too short, and they seem to work great defensively. Also, the matchlocks run up and deliver a volley of lead to those archers out in the open. It's RAPE TIME. The Chosokabe didn't even get a chance to shoot. Ninjas are awesome, don't you agree? Now who the hell is holding up my forces like that? Meanwhile, Tino hunts the enemy general. They charge in an epic fashion. Edited March 25, 2011 by skitarii
IGdood
Toni's Horsemen proceed to pwn the living shit out of the Chosokabe general. The initial charge took down most of the bodyguards, and they proceeded to anally rape them with their spears. They then proceeded to rape some nearby bow ashigaru. Some enemies were stabbed in the neck, here a Great Guard grabbed his spear like a giant axe and swung it across the poor guy's face. It made a very loud and satisfying THWACK that nearly burst my headphones. Heroic Victory, the Arrer Boyz finally beat out Rewjeo's Monks in the number of kills. This is probably due to the fact that I didn't use Rewjeo's monks to draw first blood, and that the Arrer Boyz had greater numbers (but they lost a few in the shootout.) More line of sight is nice. That way I don't need a ninja that much. Yoshihisa reaches max level. I give him an ability that increases the amount of bodyguards and his fighting stats. I lose a province elsewhere, but that can be rectified. My vassal, the Bessho, declares war on me. The circumstances were quite strange. They were conquered by the Chosokabe, but then a rebellion spawned a group of Bessho Rebels. These Rebels then kicked the Chooskabe out of their province, but then they were now independent, not my vassal anymore. Since the game is in post-Realm Divide mode, they automatically allied with the Chosokabe and declared war on me. I now have access to the Arsenal. More on what it produces later. Hooray, now buildings are cheaper....and I can upgrade my Monasteries to produce better monks. Yoshihisa moves on, now that the Shimazu Shogunate (yup, that's what we are now) have relatively stabilized the mainland. Chosokabe trying to cause trouble... Now, I can spill some more information on the units this Arsenal can produce. Matchlock Samurai, basically the high-tier version of the Matchlock Ashigaru. Much better stats overall. RAWKET LAWNCHAIRS. (Metal slug reference) No, I am not fucking shitting you. These are pretty much like Bomb Throwers to the 100000th power. Insane range, portable rockets that blow shit up. It's like having ICBM's in your army, wtf LOL. Oh yeah, I've also reinstated a vassal in the province of Tajima. I realize that my vassals keep dying to two reasons: 1. Chosokabe. 2. They can't seem to be able to get their own provinces under control. #1 is not a problem to vassals away from the Chosokabe. #2 can be solved with a huge army parked next to my vassal's capital. This will be supervised by Yoshihisa's son, Masuyuki, who seems to have neglected a helmet in favor of looking like a No-Dachi (and hopefully not dying as easily as one). I annihilate the Bessho. There wasn't an option to make them my vassal, so that province belongs to me now. I'm sure they don't suck like the rocket artillery from Empire/Napoleon total war. +10 to diplomatic relations, but that's not going to help now. Rocket troops and samurai matchlocks will ship over with Nobutane. I'm considering making Nobutane an admiral, which can simply be done by having a fleet transport a general. I now have enough money to invest 2000 koku (a man's yearly requirement of rice, the currency of the day) in so I can receive discounts for the next 8 turns. Good deal. A Chosokabe navy appears, and I attack it. It seems that they're pretty far ahead in their naval technology, while I still haven't built the required buildings due to a lack of funds. I've researched them though. But...what are these strange ships? O Ataka Bune...what? Cannon Bune..what? Probably a result of converting to Christianity. It's a cold, snowy night. Brrrrrrr. The O Ataka Bune looks like a sleeker version of the medium/heavy bune....but...I don't know what's so different about it. Look at the minimap, and then look at the enemy bow kobaya. The Black Ship sniped it all the way from there. So this is what a cannon bune looks like? The crappy thing is that my Sengoku Bune cannot board it, which sucks. I like these little lanterns. You may have cannons, bune, but my Black Ship has even better ones. And a ton of matchlock on board too. If there's one thing the Nihon Maru does best, it's being a huge block of wall that enemy ships bump into. Not to mention the huge crew it has for boarding. And the high morale. Well I won't be capturing this one..it's sinking from overkill. The remaining Sengoku Bune attempts to withdraw, but my bow kobaya set its ass on fire. Wow, I managed to capture the two ships that I wanted the most. So...the O Ataka Bune is like...an even heavier version of the heavy bune? And the cannon bune is just a sniper's ship. Like the light infantry from Empire Total War, its job is to stay far away and just fire cannons until something sinks. The fire rockets and matchlock samurai arrive. I switch out the matchlock ashigaru, and I'm tempted to switch out the bomb throwers but instead I switch out the No-Dachi samurai. Masuyuki levels up some from fighting rebels.... Here's a new ship I can build. It's a siege tower bune...basically a medium bune with a tower....on top. And much less men. The reason? From what I've gathered it's one of two things: 1. It's an anti-boarding ship. Boarders can't climb the tower, which is full of archers who will proceed to shoot boarders to death. 2. The tower gives the archers more range. I'm inclined to believe #1 is the better answer. Man, the Japanese sure are creative.
IGdood
Yoshihisa boards a ship headed for Awaji, my staging ground to invade the Chosokabe homeland. I then realize that the vassal I've been protecting for so long at Tajima own this building. The Nanban Trade Quarter. I couldn't build it because I'm Buddhist, but now I feel very inclined to let my vassal get killed by rebels so I can take it for my own. Jeez, I'm a bastard. Meanwhile, a few of my Monks have been gaining experience preaching and taking care of my people. I send them over to Chosokabe lands, where perhaps they can incite a rebellion or two....
