And we spawn in front of a pretty steep hill.....let's stroll around it. Okay, I take it back. The No-Dachi have bigger swords....it seems? Pictured: Sword Attendants Bow Warrior Monks: Gempei version. Getting into position. While Bow Monks don't have greater range than Bow Levy, they do have the ability to extend their range by a tiny bit for about 5 minutes. This is great for pissing off well organized archer lines who will then have to move forward to fire back. But since it takes a short time between marching and shooting, your own archers will get the first shot and therefore have the first advantage for the rest of the battle. Keep shooting, monks, keep shooting. The enemy archers run forward, not wanting to get picked off without being able to return fire. They enter range for the rest of my own archers. And get slaughtered. They rout shortly, thus leaving the rest of their army sitting ducks to arrow fire. They put up a hopeless charge, and I answer back with my own naginata troops. This game needs blood. Maybe before they rout I can see how well Sword Attendants perform in combat. Well they routed, but not before I caught a few guys get utterly raped by the zanbato. That looks like cool and unusual punishment. Still no level ups. Tamba is ours, let's hope it doesn't rebel. With such a sizeable army inside it won't. But that army can't dilly-dally around for too long. Although I should keep in mind to not lose Tamba, for its Shinden provides quite a boost to the rate I spread Taira Influence to my neighbors. Tomomori levels up. I don't feel the level 1 skills fit him, so I'll save up the points until later ranks are unlocked. Although +1 morale retainer is good. Well, looks like even without an army Tamba won't revolt. I can also recruit the Shirabyoshi agent, a seductress who convinces generals to come over to your clan for a one night stand. Not to mention she can entertain the nobles in a city to boost the rate of growth. Isonokami? Fuck you. With the Way of the Bow mastered, my units can now endure shootouts a bit more efficiently with more ammo. Blargh. Because Rewjeo posts a lot in my thread, I will not sack Buddhist temples. Time to master Poetry and Literature, my most disliked subjects in real life. Yet it is necessary before I can begin to master Confucianism. Tomomori gets a wife that makes his soldiers cheaper. At least the -1 morale penalty will be canceled out by the retainer. New unit: Bow Attendants - Not as awesome as monks or samurai, but much more reliable than the levy, and they're still quite numerous One of my vassals goes after the Isonokami force, and while failing to take their province, succeeds in putting a huge dent in their army. Well that's a win-win situation for me. That vassal can't backstab me with their weakened army, and I can take advantage of this to conquer Iga, which also happens to be easily defensible since there's a huge forest surrounding it and therefore the most feasible entrance is through my other provinces. Rain is bad. Let's wait. Good. Infantry swarm, FORWARD! Enemy reinforcements arrive, and they gallop/rush quickly to the town. Enjoy the scenery. They've got some archers, more than I do, in fact. So we'll make them impatient and draw them out with the monks. Initial volley didn't kill much. They fall for it. In fact their general runs forward straight into the sights of my Bow Levy. Naginata Attendants happen to know "Rapid Advance" Well, move move move! Send in the rest. Told my archers to fire elsewhere so they won't hit their own guys in the melee. My general rides forth, shouting words of encouragement. The battle was actually very short. Levy rout when they even think the battle is lost, and it's true. When they think those thoughts, the battle is indeed lost. I fial to kill the Isonokami general, but uh...had some fun chasing and shooting them. Some level ups, aside from the ones that were gained while fighting a few Shinmen remnants at Tamba. Iga belongs to us. Looks like the rest of Japan doesn't seem to like us very much. Indicated by the red coloring. Hooray, now pacification will be much easier with more Taira Influence being tossed around. What be this? An heir from our Taira consort with the Emperor? With A grades in Poetry and Literature, we move on to Confucianism. The Town Watch can be upgraded to the Militia Hall, which spawns quite a few units. Monomi recruited. WHile I don't have the funds to finance assassinations and sabotages, it is free to set up criminal networks that work towards fucking up enemy agents who try to screw over your settlements. We receive word that Sasaki, one of our vassals, will be betraying us soon. Tomomori.....be ready. Trade partners come and go as clans die. Okay I'll recruit a Sou. lol. Let's go troll someone, Michimasa. Well actually nobody I want to troll for now so here, get some experience points in this settlement. It'll boost happiness. Upgrading Towns = More tax income and repression. Foot Samurai have joined up with Tomomori's army. New general in the name of Shigehira. Well, Prince Shigehira, anyways. Blank slate. He'll join up with Tomomori for now. Shirabyoshi recruited...now she can go dance. What treachery--oh, it's just the Sasaki hiding in the forests. Bastards. If I declare war on them, then I'll be seen as a traitor for backstabbing a vassal and I'll lose honor, which means I'll suffer diplomatic penalties and my clan will be viewed as "treacherous" and untrustworthy. I'll wait for them to make their move.... Hooray Confucianism. Well, it's great to see a Taira as the Emperor, but it's not so good to suffer a -25 diplomatic penalty for ALL clans across Japan. Unfriendly. Done with Confucianism, back to Samurai Way. This is the upgrade to the Buddhist Sanctuary. Lulz. Toki what? I only know of Toki Doki,the clothing brand. It works on his first try. Ugh, what. Minimal income lost. Uh, yeah sure let's pay 1000 so we can have ALL our towns grow. This isn't enough to warrant having a navy. Trolling failed, and disappointed Suo is sad. He levels up anyways. Let's put points in his ability to inspire towns, although I really want Meditation. Making his actions cheaper is great too. He can go beg for the rest. I need food if I'm to upgrade my Towns. Food Stores sacrifice increased income of Markets but give food. Yaaaaaay. Naginata Warrior Monks. I'll put a Junsatsushi here. About time, asshole. Oh. Oh, fu- Foot Samurai, and their ridiculously huge pauldrons. That's a lot of troops. Bow Attendants look significantly less wimpier than their Levy brethren. Increased Range, let's uh, put them into disarray. Do it, monks. I've placed Prince Shigehira on the side of that plateau there. If the enemy goes after him, I'll charge. If the enemy ignores him, he'll charge any unguarded archers. Funnily enough, the Sasaki army hesitates for a moment, as though making a decision whether to take the bait. During this slight hiccup, their units waste a few precious seconds running around deciding who to go after, and end up getting shot up by my archers. We have the advantage. Also, exposed archers are asking for it. Rapid advance, let's go after the fawking levy. GO. These archers are getting raped. Although the prince's bodyguard unit suffers losses as naginata levy are diverted to run over and attempt to kick his ass. Still, my charge on their somewhat disorganized line is successful as I run through the forest, which provides cover from arrows. Target all exposed levies! There are still a few archers shooting at us and all melee units are tied up. Well...Foot Samurai, time to unsheathe that Tachi sword (they didn't use Katanas yet) and go after them. Sword Attendants go Banzai, proceeding to lop off chunks of levy and breaking their morale. Samurai, DO YOUR WORST! Sure, there's only 60 of them, but they're elite. HURK Some of my archers get caught up in the melee, but they survive. This battle is won, they're fleeing. Tomomori charges forward, running down any would-be rallying routers. Their general hides behind his rapidly depleting lines. GET HIM. Epic win over superior numbers. Level-ups, anyone? A new son, what great deeds will he perform? Trolololololol We move on to Omi. Keep up the momentum. Winter has yet to arrive, so we won't need to worry about attrition. The Fujiwaras sure lack the unity of the Taira. Hooray, now we can move a bit farther on the campaign map. Moving on to Samurai Code. Hopefully we can get to the Legendary Bushi Dojo before anyone else. A Market will improve trade. Will build it in my provinces that have ports. Thanks, here have a big juicy update. Previously we just got backstabbed by the Sasaki and I woke up with back pain this morning. Now we are going to kick their collective asses and butcher them. Repeatedly. Dry weather. Just the way my archers like it. Well said. This is no mere town we are assaulting, it's a stronghold with walls. We're gonna have to climb it and assault it the good old way. Pincushion Levy Force will cross the river and try not to die. Attendants and elites will cross the bridge. The AI has been much improved, quickly diverting archers to the walls facing our closest approaching soldiers. I'm not going to enter a shootout with them, the walls will give them a cover bonus. We can only but give some covering fire and thin out the troops who aren't at the walls. They draw first blood,we'll have to shoot them while crossing the river. MOVE OUT! QUICKLY! Elites, you better hurry your asses up before all your levy get shot up and then you're next to eat arrows. Reeaddddy....aiiiim....FIRE! Burn the walls. Destroy some of their cover! Even better if the gate catches on fire and we get in. I suppose those platforms are quite fireproof. Samurai and Monks snipe at the general in the middle of the stronghold. FORWARD YOU DOGS BRING ME SEVERED HEADS! Spiderman ain't got shit on us. We are officially fireproof, heheh. I'd raze this place to the ground if I didn't need the money. Seeing that their morale is low (cowards!), I inch my generals closer and have them use Inspire, which makes them feel a little bit better. Not sure how much you can inspire the average peasant, but as long as they continue fighting whilst the Naginata Attendants run up the ramparts, it's enough for the Taira. Not sure where the archers have gone to, but I think gone to the grave is a suitable answer. Naginata pwns cavalry. You're DEAD MEAT. Their general has FALLEN. A CUTTING BROW! Too bad defenders of a castle will not rout unless they step outside the walls. Then again, it makes killing every last one of them all the more fucking satisfying. We shall peacefully occupy this place. A remaining army has turned rebel, and....fuck 'em, the winter will embrace them. Shiba, what!? I grit my teeth. Holy fuck of all fucks, that's a huge army.....with samurai too. No telling from which direction they'll approach. All archers to the walls! Well they've got about 270 degree coverage of the walls. A quick rearrangement lets me shoot at all attackers. Burn them! These fuckers must die! Their foolish general puts himself in fmt of my wall. Concentrate all fire and show him his shoulder pads are not manly! Enemy soldiers approaching, we'll have to pull back the archers soon. Naginatas, TO THE WALLS Show no weakness! Plug the walls with your bodies if you have to! The loose formations causes some of my archers to inevitably get caught up in the melee, but it's not too serious. Arrows zip in and out of the stronghold. The initial attack wave has been repulsed. Don't trip on your way out! Oh wait, I left my blade at the door! CUT YOURSELF Sword Attendants? BRING IT ON. We'll swarm you with archers! KEEP FIRING, BACK TO THE WALLS WHILE THEY PULL THEIR WITS TOGETHER AND REGROUP. They're coming back up. Haven't seen the samurai climbing. LAST CHARGE! The foot icon represents fatigue. The more orange/red it is, the more exhausted your men are. I assume I shot all the samurai dead, but anyways, victory. I thought we were goners, although plenty of naginata were goners indeed. Good thing I had a Town Watch here, which gave me the extra units. She is a jezebel. HAI TONO, PREPARE TO DIE! How could you!? Michiari you have failed me! I've yet to replenish the garrison at Ige and it's under siege again, this time they're not going to be assaulting me. Argh. What is happening. Did my sister-clan get ousted off the mainland? Omi has a granary built; an upgrade to the food store. Good. Where Michiari fails to assassinate, he succeeds in sabotaging armies so they can't move. He also levels up. Skills useful for spying are improved. As well as giving him a blade that'll improve his killing. Toki sends armies over to try and wrestle control of Ise from me, but I'm not going to let that happen. I'll remove their generals to avoid fighting a very powerful unit on the battlefield. Well, wounded is better than nothing. While not permanently removed from the game, at least he's sent back to their capital. With few reinforcements and time running out before my garrison starves, I have no choice but to take the fight to them. Me no like fog. Dry weather good. Forests, forests, everywhere. Ima try a new tactic. I'll have the naginata in front while the bow levy stay behind since there's so many trees archers won't be very effective anyways. This will be one battle in the woods. Units who aren't running in forests can remain hidden whilst walking. Also very annoying for archers who are frantically looking for stuff to shoot at. Deyz shooting, FIRE BACK! Not too many people dying with all the trees providing cover. Charge! We'll smash into them! Things don't look too good. My captain dies shortly after, my men waver, but luckily I have a small group of soldiers reinforcing from the corner and since they're under a different captain they don't suffer any morale penalties. They're not breaking... ReinFOOOOORCE! CHARGE! Their general shows up, GET IMPALED Samurai? Concentrate all fire! Fuck shooting, archers, CHARGE! No samurai can withstand our numbers for long! Shame on you! Commit seppuku please That was close. Lol at bow levy reaching level 4. Right, I'll promote somebody to general.....someone has to watch over Ise. 3 Toki armies. At least they won't be bugging me for the time being. Autoresolving with the Sasaki rebels. Sometimes the computer gives me more favorable kill ratios than if I did it myself. Then again, fans have lauded/criticized Shogun 2 for being much more lenient in autoresolving than the other games of the series. Tomomori gains in rank, again. Now he will spread influence also. Move on to Owari, Shiba will learn its lesson for being an upstart, one-province clan. Do it, Michiari. You have failed me once more. DAT STARE Since their naginata levy are in front of their bow units, I can safely place all my archers in position and have them shoot up the naginata levy without fear of being shot back. You might be wondering, well wouldn't being on a higher terrain increase your range? Nope, not since Empire Total War with the new Warscape Game Engine. Higher terrain only confers a morale bonus and I think a projectile damage bonus, but range stays the same, much to the ire of fans who hill-camp back in the medieval 2 and rome days. Okay, so I was practically at the edge of the firing cone, so only the very front row of archers fired. I only get to see one guy get shot. It pisses them off enough to make them move. ALL MELEE UNITS GET UP THERE Shigehira moves up, being young and....glory-hogging. Gleaming plastic bald heads. RUN FOR IIIIITTTTTTT. Meanwhile, Shigehira gallops in from behind and cuts down as much as he can. Victory is assured. I need money. Fuck the honor penalty, my daimyo is getting old anyways. Looting time. Plus, public order will still be okay. A quick boost to our rice accounts. Now I have enough money to build a Bushi Dojo, which allows me to recruit Bushi soldiers faster in that province. Aka I can pump out samurai had I the money. See those two circles above Mikawa? I'm interested in the one that looks like a stack of 3D triangles. That's the Iron resource. Owning it will allow me to export it as a trade resource, boosting trade income. Also, legendary level buildings require special resources like these before they can be built. Enemy Junsatsushi? Kill him. Pwnt. Rank up! Moar points in sabotaging armies. It's time I build a navy to get rid of the raiders at my trade route. In the Gempei Era, ships are divided into 3 classes - Large, medium, and light. They can be given a choice of 2 crews: Attendants and Samurai. Samurai crews are much, much better at combat. Remember I said I'll let that scholar write some chronicle about the Minamoto so I can boost town growth? Well that chronicle is done, and it glorifies the Minamoto. Guess what? Minamoto influence is rising across ALL provinces. Woman! You shall scout out Mikawa for me. I like her voice actress very very much. So soft spoken, a complete Yamato Nadeshimo. Sou increases in rank from having inspired my army. Got a few ships ready, let's beat back those raiders from Toki. Mikawa is barely defended, yet I can't abandon Owari just yet. Owari is kinda hard to defend. Hmm, it seems we've finally met a major rival clan. The Kiso Minamoto... Ah let's just go after Mikawa. Prince Shigehira can stay behind with some troops to defend Owari. Autoresolve...boring. No vassals required, I will keep the iron, thank you. Hmm.. Surprisingly, Mikawa has a Barracks, an upgrade to the Muster Field building. While it doesn't spawn a whole lot, it'll increase replenishment rate quite a bit at the town, making it an ideal place for bloodied armies to recover. Fire Bomb Throwers? The Gempei Edition. This is wholly historically inaccurate (even the game description acknowledges this), as bombs weren't introduced to the Japanese until the Mongol invasions 200 years from now when samurai got pwned by poison arrows and catapults firing grenades from Mongol ships at sea. For the lulz I have my Junsatsushi bribe some foot samurai that happened to be standing around. But....I can't help but look at that suggestive hand movement. LOL. Kiso Minamoto has a sizeable amount of territory, and it is surrounded by a group of clans loyal to it. Ah, I knew this was coming. Let's hope the rest of its allies don't join Kiso in this war.... None do. What?! What whorish bitch has done this?! Master of trolling, get to work on her. "TITS OR GTFO," Michimasa hollers at her. Ashamed and blushing, she kneels down and renounces allegiance to her clan. The completion of the Bushi Dojo allows me to train one of the finest cavalry of the time: Mounted Samurai.They combine the melee awesomeness of Katana Cavalry with the shooting skills of the Bow Cavalry. Even better yet is that the new update has improved the firing mechanics of cavalry archers, allowing them to switch between weapons extremely quickly. Enemy trade fleet spotted. Take it out. Rain? No plz. Dry weather now, my samurai will cream their attendants. I miss the blocky fortress bune ships. That's a large ship by the way. Light ships, stay behind the large one. It'll draw fire. OPEN FIRE! Now it's just a matter of brute-forcing our way. Flaming arrows NOW! Burn these floating pieces of junk. Followed up by Whistling Arrows (which really screw over morale), and my large ship happened to be right under whistling arrows as they passed overhead and smacked into the enemy ship to their side. Doesn't the light ship remind you of the Bow Kobaya? Surprisingly these ships are also available for use with the bune in multiplayer. They didn't stand a chance. Damn, only managed to capture one ship...albeit with a nearly full crew. I autoresolved against the remainder of the fleet, and got the other two. I didn't manage to get a trade ship though. At least these new attendant ships will be able to serve as guards to my current trade ships in production. Samurai Code finished.....now I can build the Legendary Bushi Dojo, but I got no money and I have troops to train and towns to reinforce. Hm, migrants? Sure, come on in. The Toki armies have combined into one pretty big one outside of Owari. I'm sending extra troops to Owari. Meanwhile, Michiari scouts around to check on enemy positions. Now with a trade fleet, I can look around and hope these nodes are unoccupied. Damn, my economy sure isn't giving me much money. Time to focus research on a few techs on farms before I continue researching the Koryu tech tree. +25% trade tariffs sure is nice. Revealing the map. But there are tiny stone ones for archers to take cover behind. I'm not sure how enemy deployment will be, but I'm facing outwards. There seems to be a few single bow units on the side who probably want to shoot at my force while the main battle units are engaged.....we'll deal with those later. Foot samurai let off a volley at my bow attendants who have taken cover. 0 losses. My bow levies return fire. 1 kill. This will take awhile. Apparently the enemy samurai can't hit my troops despite arching their shots. Might as well have Tomomori join in. Enemy sword attendants, ready to commit suicide as all my archers open fire on them. So I send my own sword attendants out to intercept them. People die when they are killed. Well Sword Attendants are now being shot to death by their archers, time to send everyone else in to cleave their way through. Good to see most of us have a chevron or two under our belts, except for the garrison ones (they never get exp and reset to 0 after every battle) Move up for inspirational purposes. Does this scenario remind you of pretty much all those first-person shooters out there? My bright clothes are better than your drab shit. Also, BANZAI Time to change our targets to someone who isn't directly fighting our units. Banzai helps some as the enemy general smashes into our sword attendants. One, they become unbreakable in morale. Two, attack shoots so high it should overcome the penalty a sword has against cavalry. Things are going stalemate so far, SEND IN THE MONKS. WAR CRY sends these peasants running. Poor sword attendants. Samurai and attendants sure rack up experience quickly... The Toki army was beaten back so hard its members outright die. No regrouping. Ah, our first daimyo is dead..... I got lots of extra troops from reinforcing my towns, and have gathered them together here to go after Mino. By the way, Munemori is that guy we left back in Settsu. Danced enough to gain exp? Guess I'll put points in entertaining enemies. Shigehira has been missing out on leveling up since he hasn't been the main commander of an army (which Tomomori always did) so it's time he's proven himself. Samurai went off and shouted their feats (as was custom). Mongols ignored and answered with grenades and poison arrows. Samurai saw only dishonor in these methods, and then the storms came. This was also the beginning of the ashigaru soldier, who was trained to hold a pike like the Chinese and Korean soldiers who were brought along with the Mongol armies. So, the Toki have decided to sally out. We await them like the hospitable guests we are....arrows pointed, of course. We start almost on the crest of a hill. A hill with an unclimbable cliff side. Awesome. Now enemies will have to get bottle-necked at the sides if they want to reach me. Melee units to the side, archers to the middle, but facing slightly outwards so at least the whole front line will fire, not half of it. Get them! Wipe these insignificant insects off our path! I should upgrade that. The Legendary Bushi Dojo....yeees finally got money to build it. Upgrading the Pastures in Kawachi to Horse Breeders. Next tech to research: The Old Way. Finally, the effects of letting migrants in are being felt. More farm income! Strongholds can be upgraded to Forts. An almost-all samurai army from the Kiso show up at Mikawa. I didn't expect that....and it doesn't even have a Stronghold....uh oh. NOT GOOD. Okay, let's hope we win this. I'm sure we can...we're taking cover right? They quickly carved through my levy and engaged the Bow Monks in melee. I heard a few rather sinister comments from the monks. Not sure why I made a dumb order (this happened yesterday), but I told 2 units of Naginata to charge at the foot samurai that were pretty far away. Shit, my archers could've just gone in a shootout with them. Why the fuck did I give that order? AARGH Once again, Tomomori rides up to encourage his men a bit. I tell my reinforcements to hurry up as my forces are being quickly decimated by arrow fire. The AI is smart. They're going for high-attack targets such as my Sword Attendants and Monks. C'mon, why won't you fucking die!? Flee, assholes, flee! WHY WON'T YOU FLEE!? BANZAI AND KILL THEIR ARCHERS Remind me to not fight Foot Samurai with levy again. Unless I outnumber them 5:1. SHOOT THEM, REINFORCEMENTS! A group of foot samurai nearly wipe Tomomori out. It seems the AI will quickly switch targets when the current target begins to rout. Even with the general nearby my units refuse to fight further. The reinforcements prove useless. Only a few remaining archers facing from behind stone walls. Yet the enemy presses on. Even the monks are running away. Wow, reinforcements didn't even fight much. Tomomori did not run. He died. Then his bodyguards decided to GTFO. Urgh. Why did I give that order....... Fuck. Total loss. There goes all the time I spent leveling these guys up. MADNESS. TOMOMORI!!!! WE WILL AVENGE YOU. FUCK YOU KISO. FUCK YOU AND YOUR ANCESTORS. WE WILL WIPE YOU OFF THIS EARTH. And my IRON. ........... You are a true warrior. Shigehira screams in anguish, gathers a group of his own men, and goes south to kick ass. Who gives a fuck if Owari revolts. I WILL HAVE HEADS. To hasten the spread of influence I will upgrade the Clan Estates to the Shinden. There is no dishonor in avenging a comrade via outnumbering. This trade node looks occupied. Hey look, finally a clan that actually supports the Taira cause. Instant allies. They're cool with it. Another occupied trade node. The Kiso sally! FORMATION. ADVANCE. May your arrows find your mark, LET LOOSE! Their charges are easily broken. Keep firing! They also made the mistake of getting into melee with my samurai. Massed arrows will wear down any samurai unit. After a minute of shooting, they rout. This is just a small sip that barely slakes our thirst for vengeance. Taking Mikawa back. Hmm...I think I'll remain with the Doi. The Old Way mastered. +2% replenishment rate. Moving onto Old Way Mastery. Must unlock Legendary Koryu Dojo. I can make better use of these resources. A trio of Shirabyoshi from....I forgot what clan (Hate?) made their way to my lands. But first, I must remove a Kiso monk who probably is intending to incite revolt. Pwnt. Dead body. Rever UP Putting points in sabotage,because blowing up castle gates is awesome. Good to always increase chance of escape in case of failure. Improving clan buildings like a boss. Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the first hero unit we will recruit. The Mounted Samurai Hero. Basically Bow Cavalry/Mounted Samurai on steroids, a mobile sniper who switches targets at will, snipes them, and escapes with nary but a scratch. However, will be in trouble if caught by naginatas. Also has 200 range, farther than all other bow units. Hero units also double as captains in case the current leader of the army falls. Not to mention...the legendary buildings don't give me bonuses for being the first to construct them >_> I forgot who got assassinated this time. A Shirabyoshi? Bribe for the lulz. Tired of these small armies raiding my farmlands. Sword Attendants, Foot Samurai, and Bow Levy. Not a bad group to bribe. Another Kiso army approaches Mino. I'm losing this trade node....didn't expect Hate to have a big navy. The AI never messed with me before back in the Sengoku Jidai period D: I retreated, they pursue, and I lose the whole fleet. Income goes down. Nobody can stop me now! I think. Press forward! Totomi is rather unguarded. Totomi GET. I think I've been screwing over Kiso generals as they show up. Hm, cool. They only gave me 1 unit. Old Way Mastery...mastered. Now Mastering.....is that Bushido? LOOOOL. The final art in the tech tree is the first art in the Sengoku Jidai period. Well played, developers, well played. A fleet carrying the mounted samurai hero and 2 units of bow monks arrives. A kiso fleet arrives, hoping to sink my fleet, but the hero has disembarked. Luckily, my ships manage to retreat into port unharmed. After Totomi comes Suruga. Autoresolved because I can. Um, don't think I want to do this mission. Holy fuck, just realized the Hate clan had wiped Doi off the map and pretty much control all of western Japan. I must push east. Yeaah it seems like the screenshot program didn't register the part where I halted Bushido research for a moment in exchange for better farms. This is what Bushido looks like. You can double check the first LP to see if there's a difference. +6 charge bonus, + 1 defense, +5% movement range, +5% replenishment rate. Hell fucking yes. I can upgrade my Dry Agriculture to Rice Paddies now! Michimasa is only in his late 30s and he's reached rank 4. Meditation boosts mastery of the civil arts, which I will be focusing on after Bushido because my income is shit, Realm Divide is coming, and I know I haven't prepared very well. Capture South Shinano for a 6-season effect on killing enemy morale? Okay. Well there's the Kiso Minamoto's sister clan....they seem to be doing pretty well. TO SOUTH SHINANO! Ah, the Legendary Koryu Dojo. But I haven't built a Koryu Dojo yet..... Buuut, look at the next hero I will be training! The Tetsubo Warrior Monk Hero. Forsaking the naginata, these guys have taken up the Tetsubo, a huge fucking club that bashes skulls in. Just look at that attack. 30. FUCKING 30. Wheee. A point into Escape Artist to...escape in case of failure. And Master of Disguise Now, to remove those 3 women. o_O Srsly? Well he was with us from the beginning...now he's gone. Staunch defense, of course! South Shinano is now under siege! They sally out before autumn arrives. Let's do this! There's a hill in front of us. These are what the bomb throwers look like. Moving up soldiers to prepare for flanking. Bombs fly, but it appears that I have only read just now that the new game update has given a huge morale penalty to friendly fire, especially from bombs. While all the enemy does is waver, the unit that got slightly bombed has begun to rout. Even worse, it's not "Broken". it's "Shattered", meaning there's no chance of rallying from the routing stage. SO let's bomb the archers, away from our own soldiers. Nevermind, got caught in melee with archers. Man on fire. They break, as it should be. Easy victory. Nobody is getting promoted. Whatever. Heheheheh, he's got a long way to walk though.... Another province ours. FEAR US. It appears that hero units have names. This is THE BENKEI. The one who kicked 999 men's asses and died standing not from melee, but from arrow fire. Forgot to give Shigehira a retainer. Boosting all bow infantry is nice. Improve my defense,he says. He saw how Tomomori fell from being overwhelmed. Shigehira is determined to be a great warrior. Benkei has his own icon on the campaign map. Killing off annoying seductresses. Let's scout. Fucking Benkei, you got distracted by a seductress and can't move for 1 turn o_O. What kind of monk are you!? DIE BITCH Focus on military, then we can finish researching Bushido very quickly. Yaaaay. And our third hero (well, heroine) unit, the Onna Bushi Heroine. Basically a melee cavalry heroine, except also able to use a bow on the charge. It's like the Great Guard cavalry...on steroids! I gotta put them side by side next time. Since we're attacking, the AI decides not to move their army. So, WE move. Well they shifted a bit to my right as I got close, and sent their general forward to shoot one of my samurai units? Seems like they're focusing fire on one of my foot samurai units. They're trying to hit my right portion of the battle line. My other archers to the left cannot fire since they're out of range, so I shift them over to try and envelop the Kiso. A unit of sword attendants approaches from the right, but whatever.... Can't believe they decimated that group of samurai so quickly o_O However some of their units begin to break also, so.....ALL MELEE UNITS, RUSH THEM! Levy may kick their asses kicked by samurai, but not a combination of attendants and leveled up levy! Insta-rout. And the hero being a hero. A Kiso samurai tries to stand up with his sword. He falls over and is trampled by a group of raging levy. Still you live....and the enemy general even levels up. Wtf?! Bushido has been mastered. Our units will survive a bit longer, hopefully. Now moving on to Forms of the Earth, simply because I still have that military boost bonus so I'll research this one before I switch over to the civil arts. Will let me build Encampments, buildings that boost replenishment rate in a province and can be upgraded to give stat boosts. We finally make it to North Shinano. Easy win. Enemy of the State!? Oh fuck, did I just set off Realm Divide? Shit. Shit. Shit! Let's see, my provinces on the west are barely defended. I'm going to hit negative income pretty soon when all the clans declare war on me. Aaaaagh, I'll probably have to steamroll and beware of rebels, or raise taxes. Feels like that Knights of St. John playthrough. Push forward! We wipe the Kiso out! Next turn.... At war with Kamakura, probably pissed that we beat the sister clan Kiso around. I don't feel like joining you in a war just yet. Argh, fuck, check out all those allies. Except none of them joined the Kiyohara in war....yet. The declarations keep coming in. What use is the Clan Might bonus if I don't have the money to recruit more units!? Meanwhile, Kai falls to me, and I recall what I did back in the Shimazu playthrough during Realm Divide. I recalled that vassals created AFTER the announcement of the Realm Divide do not suffer diplomatic penalties with me, and I can make trading partners out of them and thus get some money. Shigehira ranks up! Feed the worms and the dirt, Kiso. Time to move up North. Gotta blaze our way through before I run out of money. No Yashima, I am not breaking trade agreements with clans who aren't at war with me just yet. Ah, fuck. Ah, FUCK. I'm sure I can fight off that rebel army.... Arrgggh, I know, I know, do I have a choice!? ..... Next update...will I survive!? Sure, most of them are levy. But with 2 heroes in my army, I think I can do a number on them, hopefully. It does say Imperial family, but that excuse is utter rubbish since the Emperor is supposed to be head of the family, yes? Then again, given how real world history usually plays out, it's pretty much a game of backstabbing and curbing the rising stars before they shine too brightly. When melee units charge my archers, send own melee units forward, switch ranged targets to enemy archers. Well,t hat was my plan anyways. Now we'll see the chess pieces do their work. Now that's one foolish levy unit. Switching targets....naginata monks commencing assault. For the glory of the Fukuhara TAIRA!!! I think they're so shocked they're just standing. haha. 1 WHAM = 2 dead men HA! They break, and I pull back my melee units so they don't go pursuing. Keep on shooting. Moving the mounted samurai hero over since hills were blocking his shots. Someone will need to plug that leak. GO! Shift a bit. We're killing them like it's nothing. That's a bit close for comfort. Archers, pull back a bit. Those guys are confused and not charging. Therefore, shoot the fuckers. Urge to get the Foot Samurai to switch to tachis..... A rear attack should send them running. CHARGE! It works. Their army is pretty devastated, while most of my units are still in the green and have plenty of ammunition. Even with the heavy amount of pausing that I do, there's always a group of archers that get caught in the melee for whatever reason. The last few units begin to rout. After those are gone, the second Daisuke army will appear. Until then, let's rack up some experience riding down routers. Back in formation. Let's move up a bit so we don't have that stupid hill blocking our arrows. The second army starts to stream in. Shift a bit. And their general charges straight at my units. His army hasn't even formed up yet. Dumbfuck. IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE!!! I was going to run the monks forward to shoot up some enemies, but then I decided against it when they started moving their archers to the front. Here we go again. FIRE! Bumrush bumrush Charge! Once more! Cavalry, head for their archers! Crush them! Utterly crushed. HUUUUURRK The Suruga Rebels waste no time. They're assaulting the fort....and I should be able to hold them off. Well, the Daisuke became a vassal first...hm Michiari scouts along. These provinces are practically undefended. I need them quick to boost income. Kiyahara? Die. In times of desperation, we may have to perform less-than-honorable acts. Sack the place! Hm, the other clans have better roads than I do... Post Road and Stations Random Shirabyoshi levels up to rank 3, give her points in entertaining nobles. Sweeping the Okura away... And replacing them with the Adachi. Sending troops to Noto. Money is spent. The Yashima Taira have done it. They've declared war (but not actually attacked) my vassal. It's on! Great, an opportunity for me to boost population happiness and further reorganize troops to conquests instead of repression duty. Eh? Encampments don't boost replenishment? Hey what the fuck The army sent to Noto is victorious. I can always use a port city.....unless the AI sends a naval invasion my way. We shall take Wakasa! More vassals, moar trade partners. Ochi, do it. Time to move out Daimyo Munemori to my army out there....so they can replenish in the field (Captain-commanded armies only replenish in towns) With what little money I have I build a Calligraphy School to speed up my arts mastery. Disband some troops.....loot and get a farm.....finally out of the red. Done with Tax Quota, moving on to Land Tax. Victory at Kaga! It's nice to have a bunch of tiny vassal states, Hmm...should I push east....or should I push west? DIrect Land Tax will reduce administration costs by 20%. What are administration costs? They pretty much keep you from getting the full income from your provinces. My costs are at 45.9% right now, so technically I'm only getting 55% of my potential income. And that's all for today. Will enemy monks use Extended Range to troll me? Nope. That won't work. One of two generals decided to charge at my naginata. It didn't end well for this one. Alright, those monks are busy shooting at my archers. Melee units, FORWARD. Archers, concentrate fire on that enemy general in the back. You monks may be elite, but you can be easily overwhelmed by numbers. Munemori, finish them off with a charge. I almost forgot I had bomb throwers. Really, I like the Sengoku Jidai ones more. They had better training and actually killed things. Case in point. To echo Rewjeo, how is this a close victory? WA HA HA, YOU LIE DEAD, GENERAL OF OKURA. And we conquered Tango. The Fujiwara challenge us. And they're....all the way in the east. 3 years until the campaign deadline.... Oh. Enemy naval invasion from my sister clan. They land....one fucking general. What? Anyhoo, Tomoe Gozen will take his head for her lord! One on one, with reinforcements just in case something goes awry. Shoot your bows, ladies. The arrows take down 3 of theirs. We lose 1. Then the charge came. Men, women, and horses were sent flying. We lost 7, but they lost about 20. The proceeding melee was a bit of a slaughter. "NOOOOO NOT THE THROWING" Quick. Well I suppose heroes are really limited by their small unit size.... Elsewhere, Munemori steamrolls across provinces. Tajima will be looted. Shigehira will march to Sagami. With 3 heroes in tow, they will bow to us! (Actually I still haven't unlocked the last hero yet.) The Hata clan's army shows its face. Holy fuck, level 6+ levies led by a 5-star general. My troops are gonna die hard. And we're not even in a Stronghold. LAST STAND TIME Well at least I get a nice little circle to deploy in. Hold the line! Shoot that fucker and pray a lucky shot hits him in the eye. WHY WON'T YOU DIE Naginata! Kill the generals! Enemy infantry are getting really close! Level 2 Naginata levy vs. Level 5 Naginata Attendants. Hoo wheeeeee! The generals retreated (or maybe I nabbed one, but not the commanding one) Bomb throwers, don't just stand there, toss something!
