Turning to Sternblade, Matthis said, "Alright, on my count of three we let go of the door and rush up the stairs."

Pausing for a while to give Sternblade some time to consider his words Matthis then belowed, "one...two...Three,LET GO!!!" Releasing his grip from the door, Matthis turned and made his way to the stairs, only sparing a moment to glance back to make sure the barbarian followed through with the command.

Dwayne moved towards the gate, but quickly stopped in his tracks.

He resumed his habit of muttering to himself. "I'd like to think I could track the source of these corpses, and I might have some luck hiding away in the night, but am I prepared? What would I find? And who would I really be helping?", Dwayne finished as he glanced back at the crowd.

"Ah, friends!" Dwayne began to call and wave. "Where have you fled from? Might the inner city be a good place to turn for sanctuary? Perhaps if I, we, were to escort you there?"

Dwayne tried to suppress his slight fear of looking like a sodding tourist and hoped. Hoped this place wasn't so dire it would turn away refugees of its own people, hoped the people knew more than they were letting on, hoped they weren't too panicked to think. He also hoped he could ask the brave men and women who had actually fought for further support.

Releasing the door, Sternblade and Matthis run as quickly as they can to the ladder, easily outspeeding the creatures who manage to break through the door moments before Sternblade pulls himself onto the roof. Making sure everyone has made it through, the innkeeper quickly slams the hatch shut.

"The inner city, huh?" he says, "As far as I can see it's safe for now. I suppose heading toward it might be for the best, but I can't say I see a way for us to do that. The streets are infested and I can't go jumping from roof to roof here..."

Hm... disks should be able to do the trick. The challenge will be getting everyone across in time, and whether or not the disks can clear the street...

"I can try to ferry people across using floating disks. But... at most, the disks will be able to carry 300 lbs per load and we'll only have 3 hours to work with. The disk can go, at most, 30 feet from me. ...Should that work?"

OOC: Will Stella still have a True Strike bonus on her next attacking spell?

"...Wait... on second thought..." I'm not sure whether or not the disks will stay 3 feet above the roofs; if the disk falls down to street level, the people on it will surely die... "Excuse me... Sorry..."

OOC: edited after a talk with the GM. Would she still have the True Strike charge since she didn't cast the spell?

Sternblade looks around the rooftops, and notices that some of the gaps between rooftops should be narrow enough for nearly anyone to cross, though other's are significantly wider, and there are height differences to worry about as well. Peering over the edges of the inn, he can see that climbing down shouldn't prove much of a challenge, there are a number of windows, ledges and pieces of decorative architecture to allow a fairly simple, though perhaps slow, descent. There are also several drainpipes descending from the inn and nearby buildings, and there seem to be abandoned boards and other building materials on various roofs, including this one.

OOC: added more to this post!

Sternblade, being seriously dumb, doesn't figure out how to use the building materials.

"Look," he said, pointing at a narrow gap, "we could easily jump over to another roof from places like that. Can the rest of you manage?"

Stella looked at a board nearby. This looks like it's wide enough for everyone to walk on... and it's long enough to clear the gap between this building and the next. Looks like the next building is about as tall as this inn... "Why don't we use this to bridge the gap and walk across?" Stella found herself thinking aloud again, but loudly enough for the people around her to hear what she was saying.

"I'll go with the girl. I don't trust myself with a leap of faith... not in this armour, and not tonight." Damn, she'd drank too much tonight... or maybe not enough.

Grabbing the unresisting half elf, Sternblade sprints across the roof and makes a flying leap as he reaches the end, covering the ten foot gap between the inn's roof and the next and landing on his feet.

Stella looked at Sternblade and Tamara as they landed on the other building. She then tried to move the board to try and bridge the gap...

Ugh... it's too heavy! I can't even lift it, let along drag it over to the side of the building...

Matthis could not help but marvel at the sheer strength of the barbarian as he carried the female in platemail and made an impressive leap. I must perform such a great deed myself!

But alas, caution ruled over him, for he knew he was no work of art by nature, thus such a deed might be beyond his capabilities. Taking such risks only to get hurt would render me unable to protect others, there must be a better way around this. Ah right, there's the bridge the girl suggested!

Walking to the mage who tried to move the plank, Matthis said, "Hey, let me help with that," as he started trying to lift the wooden thing...

Matthis and Stella manage to lay out a plank between the two roofs, and it seems to be staying in place despite a slight downward slope.

OOC: If it's an action that an average person would have a relatively low chance of failing then there's no need to roll for it, you can just assume you succeed.

Whew! Stella looked at the red-haired paladin and gave a heartfelt "Thanks!"

She walked across. Once she was on the other side of the building with Tamara and Sternblade, she looked back at the crowd still on the inn's rooftop. "Shall we all go?"

Dwayne smiles and nods at the four of them, then quickly follows to cross.

He states quietly, "Beg your pardon if I'm not particularly useful, dh'oi- er, friends. I've never been a natural at navigating crowds or cities."

Matthis grunted a simple, "You're welcome," before keeping down and holding onto the plank to keep it steady for all others to cross. When no one else appeared to want to cross it, he crossed the makeshift bridge himself.

You begin a slow crawl along the rooftops towards the inner city, hindered somewhat by having to wait for thirty or so people to cross the boards each time. By midnight you've made it almost halfway there, though the buildings here seem to be varying more and more in height. You see more and more torches being lit on the inner city ramparts, and looking up at the full moon you think you can make out shapes flitting about in the sky. Your group finally reaches a point where there are a number of adjacent buildings whose roofs are more than ten feet above your heads. The streets in this part of town look to be fairly clear.

Seeing no stairs down the roof, Stella looked over the rooftop. There are some windows and a gutter we could try to take down... that's probably our best bet. And I see no zombies in these streets either...

Stella looked back at the crowd as if to beckon them, and then she jumped down and landed on a window sill. She kept hopping down the sills until she landed on the ground.

Looking at the distance to jump down from the roof, Matthis decided that there might be some who are less able to descend safely by direct means. Such people like him in full plate mail. Thus he decided to strip himself of part of his armour, the parts that were easier to do alone. With some added weight that he could more or less reequip alone in his sack, Matthis took out a silk rope and fasten it to a grappling hook.

Testing the edge of the roof to see if it were stable enough, Matthis let the grappling hook hang itself there while he then tied the other end of the rope to his sack. Slowly he lowered his sack to the ground before attempting to climb down safely with his sack of stuff acting as a weight to make the rope stable. Just before he went down he said, "When I reach down, I will tug at the rope. If you see that happening send another person to follow while I reequip my armour.

When Matthis gets down, he'll start wearing his armour again. So far he took out his gaunlet, helmet and greaves which he can wear again himself. Hopefully the climb won't be hard...

Matthis begins his descent slowly, but quickly speeds up as he finds easy purchase on various ledges. Dropping to the ground, he tugs on the rope and begins donning the rest of his armor.

The civilians look at the rope, and somebody pipes up, "Is anyone else going to head down, or should we start?"
