Though I agree that mudkip should be banned, simply for making the majority of the game a joke. Roxanne/Wattson/Flannery/Tate & Liza/Drake/Steven get completely wrecked by the awesome type coverage. And its not like he struggles against any of the other gym leaders. There is a clear difference between him and the other two starters in terms of useability, and overall, it'd make the choice of teh otehr picks all the more important. I just want to get multiple Pokemon with the same TMs. I believe the concern is stuff like breeding Leech Seed onto a Lotad or Silver Wind onto a Nincada. Plus deciding who is to get the more valuable TMs like Earthquake and Toxic is part of the fun. I've obviously ruled out Treecko since I have a grass type (one with Leech Seed, Stun Spore, and a ridiculous Mach Punch) but it's still up for grabs over here.
