The Dark Side of Tug of War

And I shit you not this really happened:

Excerpted from the article:

Over 1,600 participants joined in the contest, exerting an estimated 80,000 kg or more of force on a nylon rope that could bear a force of about 26,000 kg at most.

Within seconds the rope snapped, severing the left arms of two men (Yang Chiung-ming and Chen Ming-kuo) below the shoulder. (The severing of their limbs was believed to have been caused by sheer rebounding force of the broken rope rather than the men's having wrapped the rope around their arms, as was sometimes reported.) The victims were taken to Mackay Memorial Hospital and underwent seven hours of microsurgery to reattach their arms.

It's the surgeons being able to reattach the arms which is most amazing. I'm guessing the arms didn't actually work when re-attached and were just for there ornamental purposes, right?

This reminds me of the Fly, where he's arm-wrestling with a guy and snaps his arm, causing his bones to protrude through his arm. Ever since seeing that I've never been able to take an arm-wrestling match too seriously.

Now someone had to go and ruin tug of war for me? What, are you people going to show dismemberment from hopscotch next? IT'S ALL I HAVE LEFT

Well, if you can take tug of war as seriously as these guys did in this instance, why not? Could be symbolic for minefield navigation

I don't see that as a rule. I see a rule asking not to do so in a tasteless manner, as in, in a way where the graphic depiction shown purely for a response and nothing else--but that's not what the image was functioning as here.

Do not make topics about inappropriate content such as nude images, pornography, gore, etc. This will most definitely result in a ban. Also, please try to keep discussions PG-13.

The image is quite appropriate. It should be put back. Albeit, on the grounds of others' personal privacy, I would suggest it be placed within a spoiler box. Greenies, and all that :newyears:

Well, it doesn't say anything about tasteless/tasteful, the rule explicitly states NOT to make topics about content such as gory stuff.

And I would like to be the first person who dies playing four square.

Actually, it says, as it says right in the quote, not to make topics about inappropriate content. This thread's intention wasn't, I suppose, to talk purely about gore for the sake of gore--thus the words I used, tasteful/tasteless, and function.

The rule seems to be stating that one should not create a thread about those criteria in which the sole purpose is to draw attention to itself. If you read it quite literally, the entire thread should have been locked and dropped, as the content certainly meets that do-not-post rule. However, the function of the thread is not to draw attention to that element, but to draw attention to the absurdity in which it happened. It's not for the sake of gore--the arm photo was simply an aspect of it. The rule's purpose is likely meant to curb warrantless shock-photos.

Duuuude, you too? I've always been cautious when arm wrestling, ever since!

Though...this tug of war thing doesn't really ruin it for me. It's a tragedy, to be certain, but I'm glad the armless guys still have arms.

I've been hesitant to armwrestle ever since watching a video on Youtube of a woman seemingly snapping her arm while in an armwrestle with another woman. I learned that during an armwrestle, it is a better, safer strategy, to pull the opponent's arm towards your body, as opposed to the left/right of your body.

Uhh, what? It groups gore with nudity, which is an auto-ban under normal circumstances regardless of who posted it. And you interpreted that as saying you are allowed to post those things if you have a reason to?

If you read the rule properly then you will understand that it is labeling those things "inappropriate" regardless of their use, it is not saying you are allowed to post them if they are "used appropriately".

Do not make topics about inappropriate content such as nude images, pornography, gore, etc.

I have bolded the key words in that rule for you. Like I can't even fathom how you could think that nude photos are allowed if they aren't for the sake of "shocking" people. We do not have age restrictions on this forum and do not have an age agreement. We get a lot of traffic every day. Our servers are also based in the US. All you have to do is think a little bit to understand what this rule is saying.

Not even sure why this is being discussed in this thread.

I don't think it's worth a warn :P. Regardless, we're contributing to the thread derailment ourselves at this point. Best to stop posting unless there is something to contribute to the topic.

Edit: PM me or use the ticket system if you want to talk about this, don't make posts continuing the discussion after I tell my own staff to stop derailing the thread.

it is a better, safer strategy, to pull the opponent's arm towards your body, as opposed to the left/right of your body.

Force is felt greatest when it's perpendicular to the surface it's acting on. Better to keep it parallel so the whole length of arm can withstand it as opposed to only 1 concentrated point.

Thanks for helping me study for bioengineering.

No, he's absolutely right. The most effective strategy in arm wrestling is to pull their arm towards you while also twisting their palm upwards, keeping your hand above theirs and exerting maximum force as soon as the fight begins. This forces them to rely upon simple forearm strength versus the combined might of your arm and upper body.

Edit: Oh you meant safer. Herp derp, I was just pretending to be retarded. >.>
