If you hate fanservice...say it here

Recommended Posts

As a fan of things, I believe I am best served when the things I am a fan of are done well

To me, human bodies are both beautiful and ripe for people to have fun with in a bunch of the forms they come in. There's a lot more to unpack that just that in what comes to mind regarding everything that can be lumped into "sexy fanservice," though: in it, sex often gets associated via context with things that don't directly tie into a definition of sex as freely involved, mutual pleasure.

Like, I personally like chests, but I don't need to be reminded that I like chests [spoiler=nsfw, fist of the north star]in a context loaded with the baggage of sexual violence, certainly not whilst watching my burly gonzo-played-straight martial arts action show about the audacity and vengeance of compassion and human dignity.

Hello, brother. Dost thou wish to engage in some...gratuitous fanservice?

Boobs and butt poses are not that bad in small doses. But if every female poses that way and it makes absolutely no sense, yeah its dumb and shouldnt happen. Comic artists tend to get a little...carried away.

There are a few situations where it would make sense to be in that pose

Most of the time used (at least in superhero comics) doesn't make sense

It's an awful fighting pose and not only does looking at it make my spine hurt but also makes me cry as a martial artist

Oh, by the way, anyone who hates fanservice should be against Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem since it's a fanservice game.

Not to counter the OPs sentiments on this. But I sort of wonder why someone hasn't said anything regarding "morals" on this. What about morals, makes him dislike fanservice?

Because I believe sexual fanservice is indecent, and I believe decency is a part of morals.

I actually attempted a BnB pose. The way comic books do it is indeed, impossible. The real world equivalent is sideboob and butt. It does leave you completely open to an attack as well even with weapons. But if someone does a BnB and its more like a SideBnB and its not in a combat situation (and used sparingly), its alright.

Because I believe sexual fanservice is indecent, and I believe decency is a part of morals.

*sigh*

BnB's so widespread though that any sight of it other than ones done intentionally for humor and/or satire intentionally to point out how ridiculous it is makes me incredibly uncomfortable

It's just like

Out of all the fucking poses you could've picked to represent this character's personality

You pick one that looks ridiculous and doesn't represent the character at all like ???

Like there's so many better and more dynamic poses and you pick a boring overused one?

My artistic soul hurts too

BnB bothers me on far too many levels

There is exactly one situation where it would actually work in (some kind of a mid action twist throw shot, I'm bad at description tho) but more often than not it's used in a context where it just doesn't

I am very critical of professional art because they're getting paid and I'm starving

I haven't read through all the posts, but I wonder if someone's already mentioned Toaru Majutsu no Index II. The first series had very little to none, was quite conservative, plus it was a great series and I enjoyed watching it. Series two rolls in and suddenly UPSKIRTS and NAKED SHOWER SCENES EVERYWHERE. What the fuck is this? That is what pissed me off about it the most.

It's acceptable when you're watching something like Love Hina or Shuffle!, it's almost expected. But not in my Index/Railgun. Piss off.

omg thank you

In what capacity do you think it's indecent? Do things like human bodies bother you, or do you dislike that the people who most often make these particular works and put fanservice in them are guys who may be communicating a message about sexuality that you don't like? Do you dislike the content itself, that is to say the images and noise regardless of their context, or do you dislike the people making them and their reasons for making them?

I will say both, the second part (italicized) is a good explanation of my thoughts when I say yes to them.

I don't care one way or the other. I'll watch/read ecchi stuff, and non. What bothers me is how many potentially good stuff are ruined by harem. Sometimes it works, but most of the stuff is just annoying because a third of the time the women are being tsundere about the guy they like and beating him up because he's talking to other women. I mean, seriously, drop the guy don't go beating him up. If I'm trying to read about a bunch of teens learning about magic or fighting or mechas or whatever, I'm not there to read about that.

I was going to respond to this, but ZM beat me to it:

Meh. I really don't care about naked breasts and butts. A bare breast is a bare breast. Anything else depends on context.

Like, I can't get myself to care about the shower scene in "Streetfighter II: The animated Movie" because the way it's done there, merely adds to build up tension for the upcoming confrontation between Chun-Li and Vega.

However, I see no way to rationalise away something like Awakening's artwork, which featured all the males with expressive poses while while the females simply didn't and instead bend their bodies like they were posing for certain men's magazines.
I'm not joking when I say that I identified Libra's gender specifically because he actually had an expressive pose, showing determination and focus.

What bothers me most about that, isn't that the characters are wearing skimpy clothes (they can wear what they want) and that they tried to pose them "sexy".
It's that they do this instead of expressing character. As if there was nothing else of worth about them but their boring 8/15 bodies.

As if they simply didn't care about immersing their audience by telling engaging stories, interesting characters and fascinating worlds and only care about the audience which gets better entertainment for their money by watching ecchi or actual porn.

Awakening to you is like Sword Art Online to me.

Oh look, an interesting topic.

For me, it depends on context.

I will use the following two anime series to explain myself: Sword Art Online (OF COURSE) and Highschool of the Dead. The latter has a hell of a lot more fanservice than the former. I like it a lot better, and one of the big reasons I hate SAO so much is the fanservice. How does that make sense, you ask? Context.

Sword Art Online thinks it's good. If you're going to try being serious and really grab the audience with your story, you shouldn't use cheap tricks like fanservice to keep their attention; it just cheapens the work. SAO has so much wish-fulfillment fanservice in it that any semblance of a good story it could have had is no longer existent.

Highschool of the Dead, on the other hand, is all about boobs, butts, and blood (zombie blood), and knows it. It doesn't try to get you to take it seriously at all, it's just a thrill-ride of craziness, one that I enjoyed plenty as a result.

There is is a middle ground here, though. Sex sells, and sometimes a piece of entertainment may need to take advantage of that just to get itself off the ground and get an audience. Papakiki and The Pet Girl of Sakurasou are good examples of this in anime: they start off with a good deal of fanservice, but when they get going the fanservice largely gets tossed out and they end up being pretty good. It's not the most desirable way of going about things, but it's better than the story never getting out there at all.

Then there are other things like Fire Emblem Awakening that just kind of have light fanservice sprinkled around that is never really referenced and you might not even really notice depending on how much you look for these kinds of things. Like the above, not the most desirable way of doing things, but I don't mind it in most cases.

There's a manservice side to this, too, but obviously that just isn't as common, and I don't really think any differently of it (if anything we could use more). I enjoyed Free!, though.

In the end, sex sells, it always will, and we will have fanservice. Just like I voted not to remove porn from the internet, I'll take my fanservice in moderation.

In Free! Seriously, it's a swimming anime about 5 dudes who go around in swim trunks all day.

This post is pure win, and especially the part about Highschool of the Dead...

Unfortunately I don't know Sword Art Online. What I saw on screenshots at GameFAQs didn't look that bad in that regard.

But I was specifically only talking about the promotional artwork and not Awakening at large.

Since that artwork isn't used in the actual game, I don't actually see that problem with the body language there.

All you need to know is how I feel about Sword Art Online. Soul described it as my "bat signal," and I basically take every chance I can get to shit on it.

Well, okay. This does sound like my Awakening.

Nevertheless, that promotional artwork it is still the best example that I have at hand to illustrate when the media in question crosses the line for me.

Otherwise, as far as recent examples for me go, I can only think of Madoka Magicka. But for that show, those complaints don't go past the opening. I definitely do appreciate that the studio had the decency to avoid pantie shots and stuff. It would have been so easy to do that in a show where everyone runs around in a mini skirt.

But the show's initial presentation was nevertheless off-putting and the reason I didn't watch it until recently despite all the fuss people made about it back in the day.
