I mean, there are plenty of places in which beating your child is even a crime. Well no, I didn't say that exactly. I don't know the past is so much "worse". I think both times were pretty bad with parenting but just as there are good parents back then and now. I wouldn't say it's not uncommon for dads or even moms to come home and beat the shit out of their children drunk or sober. I guess I said "nowadays" because it's not just physical abuse that kids endure these days but also the emotional. Not that the past didn't have it; sure it did.
