So like that time my brother had devised a knife throwing game, the goal to be throwing the knife into the target in a tricky way (throwing by the tip instead of the handle, throwing with the off hand, throwing in a particularly awkward motion, or any combination of various tricks), and seeing if the opponent could replicate it. Basically if they could, the trick was discarded and not to be used again. If they failed their own trick then the opponent could try it later to force them to attempt it. Point is, whoever failed to replicate five trick shots first lost. Catch is... he forgot when he challenged me that I'm ambidextrous. Ergo I could easily replicate his tricks with either hand, but he was at a disadvantage whenever forced to use his off hand. Easiest bet I ever won.

Awesome!

The irony is this was after he gave one of my other brothers a similarly severe loss nine consecutive games, and needed someone new to play with as said brother had got sick of losing. The ironic part being, neither of them have ever gave me that rematch after, seeing as there's an argument to be made that I can't actually do "off hand" throws due to not having one. So he lost out on having a new opponent for that game.

So... I got over 57,000 tokens now.
That should be enough to get some MP-healing items and a shiny new sword. Thanks, save states!
Yes, I'm evil. I never denied that.

Completed the Spy Games Affinity Mission as necessary for Chapter 9. It's an AfM without a playable character associated with it, but it requires little thought to recognize it's an AfM for Maurice Chausson. I like it that an important NPC gets one, as does Tatsu, Vandham, and Ga Jiarg & Ga Buidhe. As with his introduction long ago, there is a hint of shadiness to Chausson here.

His stated willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure humanity's survival, leaves me wondering how far he'd go. if the Ganglion had wanted humanity as slaves instead of eradicated, would Chausson try for that over war? Would he if the Ghost, who are an impenetrable enigma, wanted humanity to transcend into some other, radically different existence, would he decide for everyone that that would be better than trying to oppose the Ghost?

By the end of the AfM, that dubiousness is set aside, Elma emphasizes that he isn't a corrupt man. And Chausson does actively support coexistence with the various Xenos, which is a good thing. But "not corrupt" does not rule out my doubts, he could be squeaky clean and spend 21 hours each day at his job sleeping only the remaining three, and it would not prevent him from ideologically advocating for a peace at the price of some of humanity's humanity and freedom. As an old politician man, Chausson isn't a vibrant NPC, but when X2 comes, I could see him in a decent grey or villainous role. Maybe he'll stay as is and this is all a nonsensical red herring, but I'm keeping my eyes open.

The mission itself is carefully going into lvl 50+ enemy territory and getting some data from a building, with one lvl 30 fight. It's supposed to be stealthy, and Nagi if talked to gives you a nice tip here for the approach., but I didn't see the opening he suggested and instead did several Shadowrunners to get to the target building, the enemies right around it are actually very very few. But I can definitely see this mission making some people frustrated.

I love savestates.
Risk free gambling! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

And, savestates are wonderful for fixing some old game inconveniences or difficult moments. I do not regret using savestates in every castle and fort in Super Mario World, those were diabolical on my reflexes.

You bought a Metal King Sword? Thats the strongest weapon in the game. Don't use it unless you feel like "Oh, I need to cheese" if you care about difficulty. This said, you can change your equipped weapon mid-fight without wasting a turn, so in case things start going too far south in a fight and you want to rip apart the boss on the first try anyhow.

-Later on, it won't be so bad though, the main character's ultimate exclusive weapon is only 5 points weaker, so by the end, you can equip it without shame.

Most definitely. Especially if you've progressed a lot since the last actual save point and dying can give you a game over.

The original plan was to only get MP-healing items, but I saw that they had weapons, as well, so I thought 'might as well, right?'. That said, I haven't bought it yet, but I didn't know it was that powerful. Now I wonder if that whip for 250,000 tokens might be overkill, too...

Casinos tend to have useful items in Dragon Quest, but V's is probably the most broken. Later games toned down the weapon offerings, or made the good stuff only available in later casinos, not the first one available.

And that whip? The Gringham Whip is by tradition almost always the strongest whip in a DQ game. Not as strong the Metal King sword and I don't think whips can deal critically, but it does hit every enemy in a group, making it a bit better in random encounters.

Don't feel bad about abusing a casino though, I've done it in DQs VIII and XI, mostly for money in the former via selling Prayer Rings, and getting some other varied stuff in the latter. Roulette in both of these games is great for racking up the tokens, though you need to amass a few thousand first as necessary gambling startup capital.

Ah, I see. So later games have more than one casino, then? Interesting!
Though V might have another one somewhere, too, for all I know. I don't know how far I am or how much game there is left.

I've been equipping boomerang and whip weapons whenever possible for the random encounters. It saved me a lot of trouble so far. Swords and such might be better for bosses, though.
I'll probably get both and store them up for endgame purposes. Right now, my first priority is to get MP healing items, because that's the one thing I have issues with as of right now.

I've been mostly betting on monster battles so far, as this casino doesn't seem to have a roulette, and the slot machines don't seem to give as many tokens as monster battles do.

to wait to listen ingame or to do now hmmmmm

Well, i did say it's the second battle theme but it actually plays as early as Ch.1. That battle theme is used for the few dungeon-like areas. Whereas the main battle theme that plays during most of the game is this

Meanwhile, the third battle theme plays towards the end of the game and the fourth exclusively plays in the final area (but the fourth battle theme honestly kind of sucks so i won't link it lmao).

And I beat the Magmen that gave me trouble before. Going there with full MP really was a life saver. And I managed to get them all dazzled, so their regular attacks didn't do too much anymore, so I only had to be careful of their fire breath. Meaning I got the Circle of Fire now! Hooray!

Lmao. It's fine, Xenoblade 2 probably has the smallest final area i've ever seen in a high-budget JRPG so the final area having an eh battle theme isn't as big of a deal so you don't have to listen to it long.

Thankfully, the final area itself is good, despite it's small size, has good music (do not look this up, you will be spoiled if you do), and the final boss theme is dope. So it balances out.

Well, of course, with save states of course the Monster Arena can be abused, hahaha.

As I narrated earlier in my playthrough, I withhold from getting those weapons until postgame. Had to do it with the slots. Took a few days... but it was worth it.

Time to get married, apparently!
Honest to goodness, as much as I like the idea, the execution is a bit wonky. I mean... you barely spent any time with any of the eligible wives (except maybe Bianca, who the game is practically guilt-tripping you into marrying), so all you really have to go on is first impressions.

I guess it's time for a "new" meme, then:
Fire Emblem: "People marry after four conversations!"
Dragon Quest: "That's cute!"

Anyhow, I'm picking the blue-haired girl, Nera, because I made a promise to a good friend (i.e. Caster) to do so.
And also she's his favorite, so I'm curious to see what she's about. And also, she's cute.

Yep... It's my favorite thing in games! /s

I usually tend to go for someone else in that case, just to spite the game and the devs/writers/whoever is responsible for that sort of stuff.
"Oh, you want me to go for that? Well, thanks! Now I know who NOT to pick." ~ me, whenever games do that (unless of course that option ends up being my favorite among the choices)
Yes, I'm petty like that.

Honestly, i don't think i ever liked the ''main'' option in those cases lmao.

I only had one case where I liked the "main" option the most.
Though even then, her status as "main" option was kind of debatable, because that game had two "main" options...

But in that which shall not be named, I was like "main option? Screw off. I'm picking someone else".
