    @Mercakete

Not bad at all for a first draft. At least something good is coming out of this mess of an event.

I gotta say that a year (and then some) of living through a worldwide pandemic is driving people out of their minds.

While I'm certain that some people are always going to be petty about an Internet popularity contest about pixels, I think what has happened in the past year has just made people a lot more irritable and high-strung and short-tempered. A lot of us haven't been able to really go outside or do anything productive, and a part of me can see how the stress of everything can be boiling over into anything that gets our emotions running.

And on the other hand, the FE fandom is just bad sometimes. Maybe it's a little bit of both.

I agree. A bit of column A and a bit of column B.

  2. Holy crap, what is wrong with people?!

I thought the Camilla hate in CYL 3 was horrible but at least there were no death threats (that I know of) and people didn't harass her VA or the Fates team or anyone. Man, I'm sorry for you all Gatekeeper fans that have to put up with this crap, and I'm sorry for McCarley.

The "Fire Emblem fans" that complained to him personally on Twitter are not clowns, they are the entire circus! How did they come to the conclusion that what they did was in any way reasonable? Even if there was actually something wrong with GK's high placement (like botted votes) you should go complain to IS, not some innocent voice actor.

Sheesh, it's scary what this popularity contest can do to people. It's a good thing I don't use twitter and can't see the worst of it.

But even here in the most civil place I can think of in which FEH is discussed there are some bad takes that put a bad taste in my mouth.

From bringing back how awful and undeserved Camilla's victory was (it happened. Nothing can change that. Move on. Plus it's against the rules to discuss it), to calling NPCs and Heroes OCs not-real characters, to bringing back the argument that some Awakening characters are defined by one or two character traits (please tell me more about Vyland's amazing personality, or what a deep character Tobin was even before the remake) and similar elitist discourse that I thought was behind us.

At this point I'm half expecting people to start complaining about Itsuki because he isn't a "true Fire Emblem character" and also TMS sucks.

Everyone is allowed to their opinion, but you also have to respect people who have the opposite opinion as you.

Just because you can't see anything good about a character it doesn't mean that something isn't there, just that the character is not for you. And there's no such thing as a "fake character" or "unworthy character".

Every single character votable in CYL has a personality and a role they play.

Even the one-off bosses like Gromell (his personality is being cocky and dumb), Haitaka (his personality is being extremely loyal to his country and nationalistic) and Brigand Boss (his personality is being a low-life as*hole who kidnaps young girls to do horrible things to them. Completely unredeemable bad guy).

And for the rare cases like Cain from Thracia and his one line of dialogue, or Altina and her zero lines of dialogue, getting in the game can be an opportunity to actually give them a personality. It worked wonders for Altina and other very minor characters like Ronan, Mustafa and Leila, so what's the loss?

No vote is a wrong vote, and no character is a non-character, least of all the sweet Gatekeeper, so stop being mean to him! I've changed from being neutral to his victory to actually hoping he pulls it off (as long as he doesn't kick Marth out, that would make me sad).

Uff, I actually got pretty worked up over this. Rant's over, sorry for the wall of text but this needed to be said. In fact, I think I will post this exact paragraph on my blog.

Now back to more positive thoughts, I'm happy to see many people here saying they will keep voting Marth and Eirika. They could really make it if we don't give up, keep fighting the good fight!

And to all the people who are voting other characters, keep doing you! Your fave isn't less deserving of a vote than any other character.

Personally I:m of the opinioin that the winners shouldn:t be split by gender at all. Why not just the top 4? It:s not like the number 3 girl is less deserving of victory if she happens to get more votes than the number 1 male. And I don:t think this would necessarily be an unblance of gender at the top (if that were of any concern to someone, personally its not to me). Tharja was more popular than Roy in the first round and Marth was more popular than Lysethia in the fourth round, yet the gender split just discounts them entirely (and there would have been no difference to rounds 2 and 3 if gender wasn:t divided). #removeTheGendectorialCollege

So what you're saying is Tharja was robbed just like Marth and we should rally for her in CYL 6? Got it ♡

I don't really get the whole "I hate Gatekeeper so I'm voting for Chrom" thing.

Like if you're really that mad, can you at least be productive and vote for Dedue or anyone else not in Heroes?

Or Henriette, or Jedah, or Kamui or Validar.

Anyone not actually in this game, Chrom has 5 alts I think he can live without another one.

Yes, maybe I'm biased because I hate Chrom but I'd be still annoyed if it was an Echoes Only Vote, Brigand Boss was in second place and everyone started voting 3rd Place Alm instead of Kamui or Jedah who aren't even in Heroes.

This is a dumb gacha game with a gimmick where the cast includes murders, rapists, genocidal maniacs and Oliver, where the entire gimmick is that anyone in the series is playable, at least vote for someone new instead of someone with 5 alts if you're gonna all pool your votes together to spite someone.

The problem is if your objective is to stop Gatekeeper and you don't care about anything else, you are going to vote for whoever had the highest chance of defeating him.

I can guarantee you that if Validar or Dedue, or Reinhardt, or M!Corrin, or M!Byleth, or anyone else (except Brigand Boss) was in third place, they would rally behind that character too.

When the argument shifts from "let's make this specific character win" to "let's make this specific character lose" whatever argument about which characters are more deserving to win becomes irrelevant. And I'm saying this as someone who is neutral. I couldn't care less if second place goes to Chrom or Gatekeeper (as long as Marth remains first).

not saying you can't vote for Henriette, i'd just like to know why she got so many votes, and how it is that so many people actively voted for her instead of more appealing or popular characters

Another thing to consider is that Henriette had a big role in the most recent Forging Bonds, the one for Thracia and she had way more than 3 lines of dialogue there. The fact it was so recent means she is fresh in everyone's mind (if you play the mode at least).

Plus since she wasn't votable in previous CYL the fans she already had are likely to fell like this is her "one chance" and vote for her with more passion than if she was just always an option since she appeares before CYL 3.

Finally there's the memes. "I want to S-support Henriette so I can become Alfonse and Sharena's new dad ahahahah!!"

I feel like these three factors are mostly to blame for her high placement, together with the fact that no character ever received zero votes in CYL, people some time just vote for shit, or click the "vote for a random character" option to get wallpapers.

Anyway I'm voting for Eirika from now on. She isn't my favorite character who has a shot, but let's face it Bernie ain't beating both Marianne and Byleth. Might as well make sure Eirika keeps her position, she deserves a win and so does Marth.

  5. I voted for Dithorba and I think I figured out who to vote for tomorrow. Anyway, really curious to see who everyone else is voting for. The interim results can't come soon enough.

Tbh I think Ippei made Dorothy a little too... pretty? Because her character was not designed to be pretty. She was designed to look practical for her job and faith. But I do like Ippei's sketch of her more than her cipher cards, because the artists still made her cute and forgot the freckles.

I do hope she gets into Heroes this year. It would be interesting to see how the fandom reacts to her as they have with other slightly obscure characters.

I am 100% with you. The whole appeal of Dorothy to me is the fact that she looks like someone you could know irl. A normal girl who's not popular, nor particularly cares about being noticed. A common face in a crowd.

If that was the intention they did an amazing job because even some NPC don't look as "normal" as her.

  6. Oh, this is pretty cool! They added so many good characters. I was pretty excited to discover the bosses from Fates and stuff like Jill's dad and Levail. Also Gustav and Henriette!! (But not Thorr. They are excluding her on purpose... Final Boss Thorr theory?)

Still it's not a perfect list. They excluded Sitri and Fleche for some stupid reasons (they are like the two important characters missing. And they have a portrait unlike the two saints that are secret bosses).

You also can't vote for Pheros from Awakening still. Or Kotato from Fates. Soan wasn't as fortunate as Altina and Lehran, probably because he lacks a humanoid design. Also I don't get why we can vote for Roland but not Saint Elimine. Didn't she have a secret portrait in the game Elena Style?

Also the biggest betrayal of all. When I saw Dithorba I was so happy, I scrolled down to find Pamela and she wasn't there... what a bummer. It'a personal dream to have the four pegasus knights of Silesse on a team. A very unlikely dream since we are still at zero (seriously IS, Erinyis and Annand when? They are girls, you can market them) but a dream nonetheless. Oh well, I will still give one of my votes to Dithorba. Today's vote went to Dorothy which means I  still have two votes left to decide.

It had to be an oversight then, not removing the Flame Emperor, otherwise it would be massively unfair to every other winner with an alternative version in the game for them to be ejected from the pool but not Edelgard's canon alt.

It could not be an oversight... perhaps they changed how they do things, and from now on they will only remove characters who won CYL, or whose votes were combined into who won CYL (like both versions of Claude were removed when the adult version won). Flame Emperor's vote weren't combined

    Spoiler

    with Edelgard's

    so they get to stay.

Which is interesting. I remember when Female Robin almost won and the Male Robin fanbase was in despair because they thought that if she won Male Robin would be removed from the poll. A realistic fear at the time, but perhaps not anymore. It would stop the infighting between the Avatars' fans.

If I'm right it could change something that was only considered an obstacle (the vote split) into more of a double edged sword, since it means some characters could potentially win twice:

    Zelgius/Black Knight, Renning/Bertram, Odin/Owain, Rhea/Seiros, Devdan/Danved, Anna/Anna/Anna/Anna/Anna and so on.

It remains to be seen. It could also be an oversight. However I suggest people who may start panicking about a character winning twice take a deep breath and relax. Sure it is a possibility, but it ain't gonna happen.

After a victory a part of the fanbase is guaranteed to feel satisfied and move on.

Another part is guaranteed to like ONLY one version of a character (look at the people upset when Masked Marth got an alt because they like Lucina, not Masked Marth).

Another part probably voted with their junks and wouldn't be as interested in a version of the Hector they have the hots for that is old, cranked and bearded, or a version that is completely covered in armor (there are exception. I'm sure Odin/Owain, Seiros/Rhea and BK/Zelgius don't have this particular problem).

And there is a part that is loyal enough to try for a double win, but it's not gonna be big enough. Especially with direct competition within their own preferred game on the level of F!Byleth, Rhea and Marianne.

There are two ways FE can snatch a victory:

    1. Vote botting (but it seems they took measures to prevent it).

    2. If it becomes a big meme to vote for them. And I mean a way bigger meme than Brigand Boss. Which as far as I can see isn't happening. Everyone is meme-voting Gatekeeper which means FE won't have the support of the memers.

    TL;DR

Whether it was an oversight or Flame Emperor is supposed to remain votable they ain't winning. I'll eat my hat if they even crack the top 20.

    P. S.: Which top 20 btw? I was wondering the same thing for Limstella. If a character is supposed to be nonbinary or the gender is kept a secret... what happens in a strictly gendered competition like this one?

Uhm... this is tough. On one hand it's incredible art, confirming once again that Ippei is talented and should really be given the opportunity to draw the OCs of book VI or something.

On the other hand he forgot that Dorothy has freckles, which is like forgetting about Naesala's unique nose (coffcoffthrowingshadecoff).

This is just a doodle tho, he would probably draw a more detailed piece for the game. So I'm not against him drawing Dorothy, but honestly anyone can draw her as long as she gets in the game.

Except for the artists who can't help but make everything moe and cutesy.

Please for the love of Sothis keep the moeblob as far away from Dorothy as possible. It would look more out of place on her than Lachesis.

  9. Welp 400 orbs went down the drain, but I did get my Tharja. Also a Dorothea/Lene and two 5* Raphs, plus a bunch of pity breaks like B!Alm, Ced, Jill and so on. Overall I'm satisfied.

I certainly hope the valentine banner doesn't end up having anyone I really like (watch Aversa/Kronya alt happen NOW)

Agreed. Lucia looks better with short hair.

Preach it! There are some women who naturally look better with long hair (like Ingrid. Or Tharja), but short hair has a charm all of its own and often works better to frame the face of a character imo. It's no wonder that most Fire Emblem ladies I personally find attractive just happen to have short or medium lenght of hair (Tanith, Lute, War Arc Marianne, Kronya, Marcia and so on).

Thanks for the breakdown! I think I understand it a bit better now, and the rest will sink in with time. ^_^

    @GrandeRampel

I'm sorry for accidentally getting your hopes up. 😞 I didn't intend for that to happen with my speculation at all.

Don't worry. It's not like it's a big deal or anything. I still have the base versions to use which is what's important. I would trade an alt for Aversa/Kronya with another one of my faves getting in the game in a heartbeat (unless it's specifically Monica!Kronya).

  13. 13 hours ago, kradeelav said:

Lucia but waifu-pandering .. I hope they go with her in short hair specifically to sidestep this a little.

Implying that short haired ladies are less sexy than long haired ladies. This ain't it, chief.

  14. Well looks, like I got it right. No Aversa or Kronya tho... I was stupid for hoping.

I'm overall happy with the banner. I feel that when they base a banner on something that is a thing in the games (dancers, pirates, a specific land) it's better to have just one character related to the theme, who explains stuff to the visitors. Ryoma explaining the hoshidan festival to Xander, Elincia and Micaiah, Tharja explaining Plegia to everyone else, Hana explaining the concept of ninjas to the others, having actual experienced dancers like Rinea paired with people who don't dance like Nephenee and so on.

If the pirate banner was 1 actual pirate and everyone else was as clueless as Veronica it would have been fine by me.

But seeing the complaints over this banner maybe it's better if they stick to one (like the Jugrdal dancers) or two games (like the very first seasonal) in order to prevent people from getting angry over the ONE character from the game they like not being someone they wanted.

Anyway, very happy for Katarina and M!Kris getting an alt (and this also means F!Kris is coming sooner or later) and for Raphael getting in the game.

Tharja of course makes me happy by virtue of not being red AND we finally have Tharja emblem. Dorothea & Lene are a weird choice for an Harmonic, but I dig it. Never expected Lene to ever get an alt, so I wouldn't complain about her being the cheerleader.

It is funny that Dorothea is the first character ever to get two alts without a base version being in the game (Veronica's base version IS in the game. We just can't use it). I would think that's not going to last, but I also thought we would have gotten base Charlotte by now, so... Dorothea trapped in alt jail forever confirmed???

Tharja is my top priority and I have enough orbs to reasonably get her. If I get her quickly I will try for the other characters, since I like everyone here.

  15. 4 hours ago, Mercakete said:

Edit: After reading people's guesses, yeah, black magic in the desert is probably the theme and if that's the case, then I'm sure it's Tharja and Robin here. I wonder if we'll get another Henry alt, too, or maybe a Gangrel alt. I really hope we get Validar for this. He'd fit that theme too perfectly! Grimleal Morgan would be awesome, too. Though, we'll probably wind up getting Aversa. If we're getting multiple games' representation, and people expect 3H, then we'll probably get Kronya. Hubert would work with the dark magic theme (as would Lysithia, so she might, too), but Kronya's both female and (from what I've gathered) working the most closely with dark magic/sinister people.

Don't do this, friend. Don't give me hope. An Aversa or Kronya alt would really make my month. I guess it's possible since Ursula got one, but IDK it's a gamble to get my hopes up.

I actually don't think Medeus was very important in the grand scheme of things even when you take into account that he was the first Final Boss. Its why he didn't make my list. He didn't really impact the series much going forward. Gharnef, Camus and Michalis all went on to influence future Fire Emblem villains. You can see Gharnef in every evil dark mage that pulls the strings behind the scene or every insane cultist, and you can recognize Camus in all the other blonde, handsome and conflicted enemy generals. The villains of the Michelis archetype eventually became more pathetic as time went on but even that stems from Michelis' delusions of grandeur and it making him bite off more then he could chew.

But none of the Final bosses, not even the dragon ones really took after Medeus in any way. Not in design and not in personality. All the Camus look the same but few if any villains replicated the bald old man look that Medeus went for. All Gharnef's act the same but all Dragon antagonists have different motivations and mannerisms.

You made some valid points. If you judge him only on his appearances in the games, the only merit of Medeus is being the final boss of 5 games (yes, I am counting TMS) and little more.

However, if you look at things in a more meta sense there is a certain uniqueness to Medeus. The title of the game is Shadow Dragon and the Blade of Light. And he is the dragon the title is telling you about. The title doesn't really even tell you about Marth (or Anri) at all, just their sword, but it does tell you that Medeus is someone to look forward to. It creates expectations for him right at the start. No other game in the series refers to a specific character with its title (okay Radiant Dawn does in Japanese, but to be fair Ashera also made my list).

Also, before you even start the game they tell you the story of Anri and Medeus. It's the first thing everyone who started the series with the first game learned about. Before you knew who Marth, Caeda and Gharnef were, you knew who Medeus was, and shortly after, Anri. He really should get in the game too. But the big difference between him and Anri is that the hero of light is just one of the 3 super important characters of the lore (Naga and Medeus are tied with him), while the Shadow Dragon is just as important for the lore AND gets to actually be in the game.

And sure there are other cases in which the game tells you about a super important character before you are told anything else (Duma and Mila in Echoes, Seiros and Nemesis in Three Houses), but first of all, they are already in the game, and secondly to me there is some merit to being the first.

This is just my opinion at the end of the day, but Medeus deserves some more credit.

    • Miriel - last of the OG Shepards that hasn't made it in, i think. Yes, her plot importance isn't high, but you socialize with the Shepards quite a bit, and for a group that's mostly "rounded out", it strikes me as odd she's not in.
    • Dare I throw Priam in for flame war bait?  😛 sure as hell "unique" and err, impactful .... on forums ....

    This is blatant Vaike erasure.

Also, lmao Priam. He had a huge impact on players in a way I guess.

Surprised nobody has mentioned Boyd yet.

  18. I was reading some of my old topics just for fun and I realized something. It's been exactly two years since my topic on the characters who OBJECTIVELY deserve to be in Heroes, no questions asked, super important and loved blah-blah-blah...

And look at that! My entire list has been added (minus one important person), which means I was pretty spot on. But it also means that the topic is almost as ripe for a remake as Genealogy.

So let's try again to find out who are the Ten characters who absolutely deserve to get in the game before it shut downs, based not on popularity, but on plot importance, uniqueness and how much they stand out and have an impact on the player and ideally on the world they live in.

But first a couple of rules:

    1. It goes without saying but since the goal is to figure which characters currently missing from the game deserve to be included for their merits, the characters who are already in the game are excluded. Yes Jim, even if they are alts-only, even if they are the back-up unit for a Duo and even if they have different personas. Basycally no Zeke, Jeritza, Severa or Hardin, I don't care if they have completely different personalities and memories. Even so, I know many people will still include Rhea, Pent and the likes. Oh well, nothing I can do about that.

    2. Try to keep personal feelings out of this as much as possible. I know that it's hard but the goal here is to figure out who are the MOST IMPORTANT characters missing from the series as a whole, not just our favorites. We had a whole separate topic for our favorites.

Without further ado, here's my list:

    10. Touma & Cain (TMS)

Yashiro I can kind of excuse since he is the last party member, but Touma is there for the whole game. There is no reason whatsoever not to include him when less important party members where included.

    9. Dedue (Three Houses)

Three Houses was treated quite well. Basycally everyone who is very important has been added in some way and quite quickly. Except for Dedue. He is important by virtue of being a retainer, and he manages to be relevant in more routes than just Blue Lions. He absolutely deserves a spot and at this point I'm guessing they are saving him for some reason (introducing gauntlets?). Who would be the most important characters missing after he is added? Perhaps Marianne, or maybe Yuri. And the Agarthian folks but... yeah, better to not speak about them.

    8. Markus (Binding Blade & Blazing Blade)

Question: Why do we have all the Jagens except for him? Okay, and Oifey who also almost made this list, but Markus beat him by virtue of being in TWO GAMES. Seriously, why is he still missing? If Duessel can get in and not as a demote, why is Markus not hot enough? At least in his young incarnation he should meet the standards.

    7. Elffin (Binding Blade)

This is a good example of not basing the list on personal likings. I don't care about Elffin much at all, but the guy is VITAL to the plot of FE6. Even if you pick the specific route to not recruit him like I did, his importance is clear to see. Also he is one of the three refreshers missing (not counting a possible young Lehran alt) so they can't avoid him forever.

    6. Pelleas (Radiant Dawn)

Of the three royals missing from Tellius, I pick Pelleas as the most important one. Yeah, Skrimir and Kurthnaga are cool too but the presence of Pelleas kind of kick-starts the plot of RD (even in stupid ways coffbloodpathscoff) and in my opinion that counts for something.

    5. Dagdar (Thracia 776)

Another "kinda" Jagen who is still missing. And he gets bonus points for the fact that Thracia really needs more characters to get a more acceptable roster. Perhaps Boyd, Sain and Kent should be considered important enough to make the list for similar reasons to Dagdar, but I had no spots left for them.

    4. Ashera (Radiant Dawn)

Yeah, the big bads are kind of important in a story, what a surprise. There are some others I excluded like Anankos, but what can I say? Ashera is more fascinating as a villain and you don't have to buy a DLC to meet her. If Sephiran wasn't very recently added, perhaps I would have given the spot to him.

    3. Nergal (Blazing Blade)

The big bad who dictates the plot of an entire game. He should be in already.

    2. Manfroy (Genealogy of the Holy War)

The big bad who dictates the plot of an entire game. He should be in already.

    1. Medeus (Shadow Dragon & Mystery of the Emblem)

Without a doubt the number one most important character of the franchise still missing from the game. Seriously, without him we wouldn't have Idunn, Grima, the King of Goldoa (screw writing his name) and a bunch of other kids who hav no respect for their grandpa. Still more respect than IS has for him tho.

    0. Nyna (Shadow Dragon & Mystery of the Emblem)

Now this bonus position may seem like cheating but I wanted to do something special for the only character of my old list unfortunate enough to not make it. What can I say? She was long overdue two years ago and she still is today. It's crazy that we got Guinivere and Emmeryn but not the OG. Like, wtf IS? What are you waiting for? Can you at least give her a seasonal alt?

And with that my list is done. Can't wait to see yours and confront them. Which characters who are extremely important to the franchise are still missing in your opinion?
