It would need to become a different game to be "tailored" for me, but it sure is a step.

I mean, that's about as muscular as women are allowed to be in fiction, so I guess I'll take it. Wouldn't be surprised if the fanart buffed her and in the original game she's just stated to be buff to maintain ideal marketability. Let me look her up.

She's canonically buff, it's just that the characters all have the same drawing style

What does it mean that "the sprites are old", anyway?

It was made by just two guys in the late 90's/early 2000's, so the art looks, well, amateurish. I mean, just look at her arm length

I fucking hate how Serenes handles embedded twits, they're impossible to remove when I'm trying to respond to specific things

Anyway, I will consider it as an option next time I feel in the mood for a super anime VN. Considering I read Steins;Gate, uh... a year and a half ago, that's not likely to happen for a while, but hey.

I can't blame them for not being able to draw muscles, then.

Unfortunately that's ten years after the Shimabara Rebellion. Although kakure Kirishitans (Hidden/Crypto-Christians) would still have existed, clinging in secrecy to small, symbolic fragments of a faith whose ways were lost to them, until the Shogunate came to an end two centuries later.

Maybe her master is one who wants revenge?

Jeanne Alter is also avenger, so that could fit

Re-Boot Green Earth Factory Mission:

Spoiler

2023092715410900-s-1.jpg

The last Factory mission. I forgot how good/bad it is.

2023092715412200-s-1.jpg2023092715412400-s-1.jpg2023092715412800-s-1.jpg2023092715413100-s-1.jpg2023092715413300-s-1.jpg2023092715413800-s-1.jpg2023092715414100-s-1.jpg

Sturm makes his first showing since the game’s opening.

2023092715414700-s-1.jpg2023092715415200-s-1.jpg2023092715415600-s-1.jpg2023092715415800-s-1.jpg2023092715420500-s-1.jpg2023092715420800-s-1.jpg2023092715421300-s-1.jpg2023092715422300-s-1.jpg2023092715422900-s-1.jpg

The "recent skirmish" line is odd given the BM invasion ended a while ago. But I get it that they didn't want to have all four heroic nations here.

2023092715450900-s-1.jpg

A big map, yet also cramped. With lots of cannons. I don’t love it.

For COs…

  • Green Earth could go whichever way it wanted to. Yet, factoring in Orange Star’s possessions, all that water and an airport, Eagle makes the most sense. Selecting Jess even has her admit GE is air-oriented here.
  • Orange Star is earthbound unless you let it take that neutral airport GE is better off having. This map isn’t capture-heavy or suited for a Mech swarm, so Sami isn’t good. Max could work, but ground area for is rather small, possibly nice for indirects which isn’t good for him. Plain old Andy is probably best, no indirect or direct penalties.
  • Gold Comet… doesn’t really have a good CO here.
    • Kanbei is probably the worst here, Gold Comet is starved for income and has to build naval units ASAP, the combination is really bad given Kanbei’s pricier units.
    • Sensei could use his +1 transport movement to get to the southeast island faster. And he could take one of the half-circle islands for an airport to churn out B Copters too. Yet his Firepower penalties with vehicular land and naval units could be bad here for 1-turn slower cannon/pipe seam destruction.
    • Although there is no Fog of War, Sonja is arguably the least worst, given normal unit costs and no Firepower penalties.

I wish I could field all three GE COs, since one army suits each of them, but you can't.

I don’t like this map, because it ends up being too empty. Eagle builds an airforce about equally of Fighters and Bombers, Andy a land army, Sonja builts a Lander and some Infantry.

2023092716192900-s-1.jpg2023092716275400-s-1.jpg

The problem is that Hawke isn’t aggressive enough, he held back too many strong units and never seriously threatened me from his little northeast corner. Some of the cannons are nonthreats, and the ones that could be an issue early on are destroyable soon enough. The above image is about as far as Hawke pushed outward, though he tried to kinda aggressive with his air more than his land forces. The mission’s name “The Great Sea Battle” is a lie, because Hawke’s Factory can’t make naval units and he doesn’t start with any; all he ever built was a few harmless Landers.

2023092717493000-s-1.jpg

Gold Comet can win this mission in a cheaty way by destroying the eastern Black Cannon and then using a Rocket to destroy first the Mini-Cannon in front of the pipe seam, and then the pipe seam. But, concerned this could result in a bad Power score, I had Eagle Bomber it instead, it was no slowdown. I won on Day 24 with a near perfect score, minus like 6 missing points in Power.

Sonja's mother was brainy too? And nice word choice Andy.😉

They had to give all 13 COs at least one line here, no matter how small.

2023092811262500-s-1.jpg

The penultimate battle …and it looks like a child designed it. This is a really terrible map.😑

A token three naval units to the sides, with the enemy’s land force packed in the middle. While you have access to deployment facilities, the enemy does not. Even worse, the AI still refuses to blow up pipe seams, meaning that big army will just sit there until you choose to set it free! And even then they didn't seem interested in moving. The Advanced/Hard/Expert difficulty, whatever you want to call it, replaces this entirely dysfunctional map with one that’s actually functional. Thank Hachiman for that!

To win, it’s destroy the three Black Cannons. Which are just annoying more than anything with their gargantuan ranges.

Oh, and Sturm is in charge.

2023092811275500-s-1.jpg2023092811275800-s-1.jpg

In AW1, Campaign Sturm was +20 Firepower, -20 Defense, 8HP Meteor Strike. Versus/War Room Sturm was -20 Firepower, +20 Defense, 4HP Meteor Strike. Black Hole Rising gives Sturm both bonuses, neither penalty and keeps his easy terrain movement shared by both AW1 variants too. Sturm is brokenly strong, as befits a final boss. Von Bolt his DS replacement being "balanced" meant he was fine in PvP, but not so fun.

2023092811401000-s-1.jpg

And as I said before, the meteor could've looked better.

I picked Eagle-Olaf-Andy for my COs. Andy used a few B Copters to sink the tiny navy, then used Battleships to smash a Laser and weaken the handful of enemies behind the pipes. Olaf used a Sub + Battleships and did the same. Sadly, the Bships unless Grit can't snipe the Black Cannons. Eagle built two Rockets to wreck the Mini-Cannons and pipe seams, and then amassed many Bombers to destroy Sturm's army for a good Power score and bomb all three Black Cannons on Day 21. A perfect 300 score on such an awful map.

2023092812265500-s-1.jpg2023092812265800-s-1.jpg2023092812270300-s-1.jpg2023092812270800-s-1.jpg2023092812271700-s-1.jpg2023092812271900-s-1.jpg2023092812272400-s-1.jpg2023092812272900-s-1.jpg2023092812273100-s-1.jpg2023092812273600-s-1.jpg2023092812273900-s-1.jpg2023092812274200-s-1.jpg2023092812274400-s-1.jpg2023092812274700-s-1.jpg2023092812275000-s-1.jpg2023092812275400-s-1.jpg2023092812275700-s-1.jpg2023092812280300-s-1.jpg2023092812280100-s-1.jpg2023092812280700-s-1.jpg2023092812281000-s-1.jpg2023092812281300-s-1.jpg2023092812281600-s-1.jpg2023092812282300-s-1.jpg2023092812282800-s-1.jpg2023092812283200-s-1.jpg2023092812283500-s-1.jpg

I previewed the final fight, it has actual map design. Might present a challenge too. I need to decide which three COs to bring.

They redrew the map on Hard as I said. Fundamentally, same idea, but it isn't so bad. It should take four turns for the four Neotanks and Mid Tanks to descend down the middle and start assailing the army there. Although a lack of enemy deployment facilities and oddly no airpower should mean it isn't too brutal when I see this in 3D.

...Redrawing some maps for higher difficulties is an interesting idea, Fire Emblem has never tried it for some reason. But then, FE uses much more map visual variety, and nowadays 3D assets are a lot of work, so it'd probably be a chore. Not to mention FE's greater emphasis on story means somebody would be asking things like "okay, which interior layout is the canon one for Castle Neverfall?".

I started playing Tears of the Kingdom very recently and while I've purposefully avoided the discussion on it because I don't want to get spoiled and haven't gotten very far, I just need to say this

The fucking beginning part where dry Ganon says "And to think Rauru placed his faith in you." Got me wide eyed thinking they were actually about to directly tie the plot with Ocarina of Time somehow.

Course it turned out this Rauru was a goat man seemingly unrelated to the sage of light in games past, though light does seem to be a theme in the Zonai civilization.

...Though so far I've only just gotten on the surface and have learned little.

Well, it goes both ways, but Micaiah's side is only allowed to survive, never win.

Also, since I think you're already past the point (at least, for all that it matters), if you don't know already, then one peculiarity about this part of Part 3 is you can force some defections. Zihark and Jill can switch to the Mercs side,  if they get talked with the right people. Lethe and Mordecai for Zihark, Haar for Jill. A few other options exist if you transferred an A rank support from PoR. Brom and Ilyana for Zihark, and Mist for Jill. Outside Aran, I think these are the only cases of "talk to Red unit to recruit" the game has. You could've done this even in 3-6, with Zihark becoming an enemy mid-map (in this case you need to have him be the one starting the talk). But if you then defeat him, he actually dies. Apparently he still keeps the "vulnerable to permadeath" flag and the game doesn't add it when he defects during 3-6.

Hmm, I don't remember if I noticed back then, but as I was checking, it came to my notice that Engage splits the El tomes between the C and B ranks. Which is... weird. Since they could've just added another full tier. Heck, RD and Awakening did with the Arc tomes.

Watching the Doctor Who episode The Web of Fear, and episode 3 (serial format, remember) is entirely pictures with audio. Turns out, of this six part episode, only episode 3 is missing but we know it exists:

"Episode three is the only missing episode known definitively to have an existing copy, but not in the BBC Archives. It was recovered along with the other episodes in Nigeria, but was apparently stolen by a station employee and sold to a private collector — likely due to its high value as the first appearance of the Brigadier."

So it's out there. Someone just doesn't want to give it back.

I feel was feeling fairly melancholic earlier (it hasn't been anywhere near as severe as it was at the start of this month, but it hasn't ever fully gone away, it has been declines and upticks), I wasn't sure if I'd be able to do it tonight.

But...

2023092822183500-s-1.jpg

It was fun.🙂

-Well, the whole campaign. The final battle of AW2... AW1 >> AW2 (Normal/Classic Campaign at least, the map is completely replaced on Hard/Challenge) >> DoR >>>>>>>>>>>>>> DS. Still a better map than the previous two, a few AI tweaks and carefully-placed predeployed enemies would've been all that's needed to reasonably fix it, I think.

I'll post a full log of the ultimate showdown with Sturm tomorrow, it's late now and the Switch is almost out of juice.

As the credits began to roll with the action ceased, the melancholy started to resurface, expectable. (Looks like I finally found a psyche, will call tomorrow.) -Not that Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is truly over. As I said, two Challenge Campaigns (and a few Classic alternate battles I didn't finish in AW1, should do those tomorrow), I can mess around with the War Room and Versus Mode too. And if I want to try to be slightly creative, the Design Room is back, now with 50 custom map save slots instead of the meagre pre-DoR 3. -Although, sadly, I still can't get a map size large enough to recreate Dual Strike's Sturm's Land and Lash's Land bonus maps that came from having AW2 in the GBA slot of an original NDS.

...I should get back to GrimGrimoire or boot up something new instead though. Or continue those unfinished EOIV and SRWJ runs, or... 😅. But I admit Advance Wars is something I can comfortably return to at any minute.

@Interdimensional Observer

Didn't Elzam's beloved steed die a natural death some years ago?

-But who cares? It's SRW, and it's OG to boot, where Banpresto has its fullest license to go wild!😄 No reason at all they can't bring Trombe back. Only a support thingy doesn't really matter it's still cool although a subpilot for Aussenseiter that takes over via an Equus-adjusted DML System during Pferd Mode would've been ideal.

Now tug at Ratsel's (and Rai's and Leona's) soul and have his other beloved make an ephemeral appearance again.😛
