Rate the Unit: Day 46 - Mia

Recommended Posts

Dat Rules (borrowed/stolen from Integrity)

- Ratings are assumed to be on Hard Mode (JP Maniac). And only hard mode!

- Votes need some explanation regarding their gameplay performance to be counted. If somebody else said what you want to already, quote them explicitly.

+/- ≤1 point extra regarding personality/appearance is encouraged, but no more. If you exercise your bias privileges, please do so explicitly.

- Numerical votes out of 10, or something proportional to it. Make it easy to calculate for my sake.

- Every ranking phase ends when the next RTU thread is posted (at this point, it's hard to tell).

- I will insist you do not use the "Not X" reason on any character, where X is another unit. If you do, your vote will be thrown out.

- "Recruits X" or "takes you to X chapter" or "Gives you Bronze Sword" arguments are explicitly banned. C'mon, people, this shouldn't need to be a rule. That's not gameplay performance.

- Assume that the character in question is being recruited.

- Similar to the "Recruits X" rule, do not use "she brings a Savior to the team" as an argument.

- BEXP is free to be used in any quantity on any character.

- Skills can be reassigned freely.

- No transfers.

- I withhold the privilege to tell you your rating is bogus and demand you revise it if it breaks any of the above. I will not throw out votes anonymously, you will be informed and given a chance to revise. I will not throw your vote out if I do not support your opinion. Possible reasons for a tossed vote include: your vote is higher/lower than the vast majority to "balance the score" and failure to justify a radically different score.

She needs a lot of resources to get going, but most of those resources are not that contested anyway. Only maybe Boyd needs the Ike support, and you have two Adepts to work with. There is also more than enough money to make forges. She can ORKO semi-reliably after a bit, and is quite good for part 4 and endgame. 3-P and 3-1 are weaknesses due to poor weapon selection, and she still needs a few more chapters to get off ground. Awesome bases and growths for her level, with a speed base that is impossible to achieve without wings. (lol at feeding wings to mia)

Too lazy to do a list today... Anyway, Mia dodgetanks like a boss especially with avoid supports, but her early offence is heavily impacted by the enemies she's fighting. She takes a big chunk out of enemy swordmasters, snipers and fighters and KOs sages and bishops. There's also a wyrmslayer available to take out the occasional dracoknight. Halberdiers and generals give her a ton of trouble, though. A huge part of her early game relies on luck, but Trueblades are awesome for endgame thanks to their sky-high skill and speed. It's just a rough beginning for Mia, whose early 1-2 range is way more impacted than Ike's due to the strength gap, and she really has to pick her foes. Just don't expect anything remotely close to results against armors until you can put better weapons in her hands.

I'll give her a 7/10.

8/10. Her STR is meh and will let her down, and her 1-2 range is rather shoddy. But her skills and skill activation are great, and she makes good use of Adept, and is pretty good at ORKOing once she gets going. She also caps SPD quick enough that even 1 or 2 BEXP levels ought to get her to her Tier 2 STR cap.

Pretty much echoing everyone else here. Her start is shaky due to 3-P and 3-1 being full of armors. But once she gets a forge, she's basically rocking. Wind Edges aren't the greatest form of 1-2 range as they can't be forged. But it's better than no 1-2 range at all. Fire affinity is nice to have as it is fully offensive. Wyrmslayers are a nice tradeoff though since Part 3 seems to have more than a few Dragonmasters that such a weapon would be nice to have.

910, which includes a point of bias for having awesome personality in FE9

Mia really brings a lot of discussion to the table, and usually for mixed opinion of reasons.

Let's start with the good ol' smash_fanatic vs. Interceptor approach. The old-time experimentation of how to distribute resources throughout the game. In smash's side of reasoning, everyone is given The Communist Approach. In other words, if Mia gets Adept, so do losers such as Boyd. Most of the time smash had it in to bash her face in because she stole the spotlight over the furry Swordmaster. Or, at least, that's how it always seemed. Then, there's the more logical approach, which is what we're going to do with discussing Mia here.

Mia requires resources, just like any other unit. The thing is, she makes great contestants for what she receives. For starters, we have a forge. Now, smash always loved to whine how Mia couldn't get a Steel Sword forge with +Crit because The Greil Mercenaries Are Too Poor. Of course, that logic is presented as a wet noodle thanks to the Silver Card making the forges at a reasonable discount and the Dawn Brigade / Crimean Royal Knights being able to ferry some of their own items over to the Greil Mercenaries. Since the Greil Mercenaries get the most spotlight in Part 3, it only makes sense to give them as much as possible from the other two teams. The Dawn Brigade isn't in huge need of buying items - usually the Physic Staff, Crossbow, and Olivi Grasses suffice. Silver Poleaxes might be an option, too. Crimean Royal Knights all suck ass anyway, and they get a little gold dump for funds anyway.

The next resource is usually Adept. Adept is best suited on Mia thanks to her high AS, which in turn helps her double and increase the activation rate. While other units such as Shinon might want to take this resource, it's easy to strip Adept off of Zihark and just ferry it over to the Greil Mercenaries. Even under the scenario that you're using Zihark, Shinon is usually sufficient enough without Adept once Silencer comes into play, which is pretty quick.

Finally, Ike support is highly recommended. Even if you're really stingy on Ike support, Oscar is another worthy candidate. Mia's Fire and their Earth affinities compliment each other nicely - Ike can still make use of +Atk when using Brave Sword or in Part 4, while Oscar can never complain about extra Atk in his pocket. Meanwhile, this helps Mia build up some "durability". While not concrete, especially with biorhythm taken into account, it still helps make Mia a little more likely to survive slaughters.

Mia is kind of a fun character to use just because it's like playing the slots - you really never know what's going to happen. Mia can either activate Adept, critical hit, dodge, or take a hit, or leave an enemy alive. While it sounds appealing to the casual player, the efficient player prefers on having reliance above shoddy percentages to damaging, killing, or avoiding death. This is an actual problem, too, since Mia is often going to fail to ORKO if she cannot proc a critical hit or Adept. Don't forget about her gimped 1-2 range with Wind Edge - while 1-2 range exists, it will usually disappoint more often than not.

There's a lot to really discuss with Mia, but the tl;dr version is this - Mia is a fun character to use and she still provides some efficiency advantages to the table, but her flaws are pretty hard to ignore as well. Don't underrate her, though - she's a lot better than a lot of the characters that reside in this game.

Aside from her first two maps, so long as she is sufficiently leveled and given the stuff to make her work, she won't really have trouble taking on much of anything. Hit rates against her are low enough that her chance of death is generally negligibly low, and between adept procs and critical hits, she will outright kill enemies most of the time. Whatever scraps remain are mopped up easily enough by the majority of GMs, who have next to no way to ORKO at all. It takes a bit of time, but depending on how quickly you can get her to Trueblade, she will ORKO most enemies outright, and between critical and Astra, she doesn't really need to hold on to Adept anymore if you would rather it elsewhere. Of course, like any character, she can be Str screwed, but unlike most, she pretty well is immune to being Spd screwed. she doubles most enemies into mid-late part 4 with nothing more than her base and promo gain. In the event of Str screwage, she essentially continues her part 3 performance into part 4, 3HKOing most enemies(requiring better weapons, like the Vague Katti or a Silver Critforge) and doubling, but with additional crit, Astra, and even more Spd to make use of Adept, she can still hold her own even if Str screwed. Not something a whole lot of growth units can say.

Of course, if she grows on point, by part 4, she will be ORKOing most enemies naturally, only needing to rely on procs for Generals. She is generally 3-4HKO'd at incredibly low hit rates, so death chances are as low as ever. She isn't mounted, and doesn't fly, but I may be one of the few people who don't see that as a negative for anything that doesn't have a horse, so much as a positive for those that do have them. Overall, she isn't an essential unit, but she does her job, and she does it better than almost every other unit in the game. 9/10 + 1 bias 10/10

Not a real fan of using her, especially if it's no transfers. A weak 3-P and 3-1 sets her further behind the Juggernaughts, Ike,Titania and Haar who make most units contributions minor in comparison. But beyond that she's still a really good unit, she requires resources(Adept,Forges) but the payout is certainly enough to warrant them.

Mia is super awesome. I can't really emphasis how much I love swordies, but Mia is among the best and funnest sword users in the entire series so i'll try to keep things as impartial as possible.

Ok, when she joins she has a little trouble in the early chapters of part 3, and she requires a bit of resources to get going but once she's gotten over her initial hurdle she's set for life. Her growths are really awesome; high speed and skill, with pretty good str too. Her str. base is eh, that can be mitigated with BEXP when she caps her other stats (and she will). Her affinity also needs to be taken into account; fire is pretty damn awesome and it provides a fairly noticeably power boost at higher levels. Adept is the perfect ability for her... on top of increasing her damage output, the ability perfectly synergizes with Vantage. Offensively, Mia goes from being "ok" to downright terrific in a short while if you raise her right. We all love seeing her kill enemies who strike her first. Ike has been mentioned as the ideal support candidate, but I like pairing her with Oscar since he REALLY appreciates that power boost (plus its fucking Ike... it's not like he needs that power boost anyway). Regardless of who you pick, she LOVES the earth affinity in order to dodge hits like "she just don't care." Awesome for part III, and a worthy candidate for being "the" trueblade in part IV.

She's probably the most effective swordmaster in the game, because Edward and Stefan lack availability, and Lucia and Zihark lack stats, comparitively. She can BEXP abuse when she caps speed and skill, and even HP. She's probably the most durable swordmaster because of her 40/70 defense and HP growths. Her resistance isn't great, but who cares? Her strength can be BEXP abused and forge weapons are worth it for her. A solid unit. Slow start with durability and damage but when she gets going she's great, swordmaster caps and movement, Greil mercs availability...... 7.5/10

A character that suffers from Overrated Swordmaster Syndrome. However, unlike most, she can actually back it up by turning out greatmazing eventually.

Like every SM, she'll cap skill & speed. It's pretty much a given for her class. Her strength base ain't so hot, but you can work around that with BEXP after she caps skill & speed. But it's unlikely she'll be ORKOing for a while, unfortunately. But her lategame/endgame is where she shines. Astra in this game doesn't suck, and neither does her damage output after she gets a better weapon and a little more strength.

Mia improved greatly from the last game. She went from mediocre at best to pretty good.

Mia requires resources to be useful. Fortunately, none of them are very costly. Adept is the first resource needed to make her rock and roll but fortunately, it's not very well contested for, with only Shinon coming close to beating her with it and you can just ship another Adept over from the DB. Secondly, an Ike support is needed to make her into a dodge tank but, if for some reason, you don't want to pair her with Ike, you can have her support with Oscar, or any character with a Thunder or Wind affinity, although she'll have higher chances of death. Thirdly, a Crit Forge is devastating on her and you should make one for her ASAP, although if you don't want to, she can do ok with a Steel Blade.

The main problems with Mia are her strength and her 1-2 range. The strength deficit means her 1-2 range is even more ass than it normally would be and it also means she has trouble naturally ORKOing. The latter is a problem because if Adept doesn't proc (and later Astra), she'll end up leaving an enemy alive, which means she's unreliable for ORKOing. This is a problem on Part 4 maps because the Rout objectives and the constant reinforcements, so it makes it harder to complete the objective. Her 7 move also limits exactly what she can do.

Mia is overall pretty good and is certainly worth putting on the team, it's just she's overrated by many people.

This is a problem on Part 4 maps because the Rout objectives and the constant reinforcements, so it makes it harder to complete the objective. Her 7 move also limits exactly what she can do.

Mia is overall pretty good and is certainly worth putting on the team, it's just she's overrated by many people.

Mia, the sassy loudmouth who cant seem to keep her trap shut about combat.

Pros:

ok base level.

Good speed base.

Critastic.

Cons:

Lowish strength base.

May struggle to keep up (exp wise).

Durability is ehh.

Mia here, is much much better than her PoR self. In PoR, she was borderline crap. Here, she can become the goddess of spamdeath. However, she needs love in order for this to happen. Love in the form of skills, forges, BEXP, and a lot of use. While on other modes, she doesnt have to be completely babied or anything (just loved), in HM i can imagine her being a little on the ehh side at first. Probably needing a handholding. Her durability isnt great and she relies on her avoid and speed to not get hit. When she does get hit, its ouch. Her strength isnt fantastic to start with so shes gonna be all relying on her crit to ORKO junk. Shes always doubling however, so chances are she may crit with that Wo Dao. She aint doing a lot of damage to generals though. At least not until later.

Mia can turn out rather awesome in this game. A decent endgame pick. She likes having skills like Adept and Disarm. She likes having a forge with a lot of MT to get going. She likes a bit of BEXP abuse.

7.5/10. 7/10 bias because her personality annoys the shit out of me. Next time, Mia, dont sass the guy who took out like five guys in that cutscene with his magic, while you only take out one. Twat.

Suffers from ORSMS

Haha about this... so many 9/10 and tens etc, haha. How can Mia compare to Haar, or Titania, no axes, no mount, no reliable ORKO's, no reliable 1-2 range, no raw STR stat to back up the wind edges.

And still 9's and tens?

6.5 at best since she is also part of the Stomping Squad, but others outcompete here so easily. First chapters are sucky for her. And then her forges, they are not so contested over. Thats good. She will get them, but they aren't resources that make her KO reliably still. Just increases the odds.

6.5 - 1 for just babbling about the white rival. 5.5
