Rate the Unit Day 9: Ronan

Dat Rules (stolen/borrowed from Integrity, which where then copied from the FE10 ratings)

- Ratings are assumed to be on Normal Mode.

- Votes need some explanation regarding their gameplay performance to be counted. If somebody else said what you want to already, quote them explicitly.

+/- ≤1 point extra regarding personality/appearance is encouraged, but no more. If you exercise your bias privileges, please do so explicitly.

- Numerical votes out of 10, or something proportional to it. Make it easy to calculate for my sake.

- Every ranking phase ends whenever I get home from school, between 1500 and 1600 EST.

- I will insist you do not use the "Not X" reason on any character, where X is another unit. If you do, your vote will be thrown out.

- "Recruits X" or "takes you to X chapter" arguments are explicitly banned. C'mon, people, this shouldn't need to be a rule. That's not gameplay performance.

- Assume that the character in question is being recruited.

- Similar to the "Recruits X" rule, do not use "she brings a warp staff" or any other justification as an argument.

- Rating a unit too low because you think its overrated will make me throw away your vote without mercy.

- I withhold the privilege to tell you your rating is bogus and demand you revise it if it breaks any of the above. I will not throw out votes anonymously, you will be informed and given a chance to revise.

- Scrolls have no impact on a unit's rating. Just because Marty can become awesome with scrolls does not mean his score should go up.

- Warp skipping has an impact on scores in so far as "Safy has an high base staff rank". Nanna would score lower than Safy because of her lower rank, but no chapter is explicitly said to be skipped. You can't get Warp and then suddenly say every character after doesn't exist or requires turns to recruit. Something could be said of Xavier, or Conomore/Amalda who are in an escape chapter where Leaf starts next to the escape point.

Tanya: 3.82

Evayl: 5.02

Halvan: 7.35

Dagda: 7.54

Leaf: 8.18

Othin: 8.86

Fin: 9.06

Some people are getting butthurt, so I'm gonna move Marty to the end of the line when we hopefully know a bit better about how to rate units.

Without the Noba scroll. Shit. But he does go twice often with his good movement stars and has good availability.

So....

3.5/10

Oh dear. Ronan has some nice move, and those three stars are dandy. However, it looks like someone reclassed him from mage. His magic growth is good, but all he can do is eat spells. He's pretty delicate too, and he suffers from archer-itis. He needs some strength now! Problem is, even taking scrolls into account, we can't really up his strength much until the Noba scroll.

4/10, +1 because I think he's hilarious. Long live Ronan the Librarian!

Aahhhhh yes. The mage that wanted to be an archer.

I still believe someone wrote the wrong number when assigning the growths to this character. It just doesn't make sense. Anyway. Ronan. Yeah. He actually contributes by chipping damage on occasion. Of course, being an archer means no enemy phase and being locked to bows for the whole game. And sadly, with Strength that bad he'll never get to actually kill anything. Continue and +1 bonus movement can help a bit, but not enough to offset his cons. Like Marty, use him while he's forced but bench him after Chapter 8.

Another level 1 Bowfighter locked to E ranked bows, but at least he has a few perks over Tanya with his three movement starts, +1 base movement and Continue. He's intially a bit better at chipping than Tanya for this. However, his growths are notorious for being some of the weirdest in FE history. He wouldn't be complete crap if he was a Mage or a Priest with growths like his, but as a Bowfighter, his strength will sadly never quite catch up to his decent skill and speed. Even his magic growth won't kick in after a good while, so don't expect him to fight Mages well in his early career with a 0 base magic. And then you realize he's also fragile, ties Saphy in build growth and has some of the worst luck as well. Future is indeed bleak for Ith's magical fisherman.

If you really want an archery unit for long term use, look at Dagda instead or try later with Selphina or Xavier. Even Tanya and Roberto have more potential than him. For the early game, he does provide decent chipping thanks to his movement perks.

He's better at ferrying than fighting, but he offers useful chipping early game. His str growth is bad its what affects his potential, doesn't help he has low bow rank either. 3/10

You should totally appease Banzai and change the thread title to something along the lines of "Rate the Unit in a Way that Integrity Agrees With, Day 9: Ronan"

He sucks at ferrying

Rescue halves your move too

Ronan is horrible. Nice magic/res, I guess? Speed is nice but he has no attack so what's really the point if he's restricted to chip forever? His move is nice too, but he's not a ferrier. Basically he can make it in ahead of your group and be useless faster.

He can't possibly be salvaged for combat. Only use is occasional ferrying due to his mobility and movement stars, but I see no reason to give significant weight to that. 1/10

As far as I know, the AI doesn't throw itself at bow units from 2-range if there's 1-range attacking available. And anyway I'm not sure Ronan can stand up to that.

I don't like Ronan and bowlock is a huge part of that. But he does occasional chip on occasion when he's (force) deployed, making it easier for REAL units to get kills and therefore exp. Maybe I should make that 0.5/10, not completely useless but he does a crappy job AND I SKIP THAT VILLAGE OFTEN but I think it's funny how he's a mage trying to be an archer. So +1 bias for his growths, for 1.5/10.

That's a valid use of bias, right?

Ronan has all the bells and whistles of a good unit and is fun to play with when you first get him, but he is simply bizarre. He has a high move growth, a high magic growth, and 3 Movement stars. He also starts out with 7 move. The problem is by the time he maxes out magic, his Strength is roughly 11. That is at promoted level 17, if memory serves.

3.14159265 (and so on and so forth) / 10 for being the weirdest unit in FE history.

To go off topic here, I can't understand why people don't like Tanya. She's been great for me.

His magic growth is really good, in fact the best of any specialist weapon user in the game. There's nobody who can even compare to him in magekilling terms. As such, he's an invaluable member of any team.

I often wonder if Ronan's growths were accidentally incorrectly inserted and the dev's just forgot to change it. I also feel compelled to wonder why his Build stat is so low. Oh well. Ronan the Loner, warming the bench. 2/10
