Btw, how does capturing working exactly? according to what i read i need to injure, then cripple them, and it's both based on rng? @Benice

Yeah, what Ruben said. There are ways to basically guaruntee a cripple, (Harpoon, mercy, Lightning, bolt knife) and knives have a higher chance to cripple, but it is RNG based. I agree that it is basically the one thing* I dislike about Berwick, and it's not that terrible. Plot-important captures are usually there by default, as you'll see first in chapter 6.

*Volo, Ozama, Gardy, Simon and Marvell don't count.

You need to inflict the "crippled" status. By default, it's almost impossible to do this. When you hurt an enemy, there's a chance that you'll inflict the "Injured" status effect (represented by a green cross above the unit's head). By itself, this doesn't do much. However, when a unit is injured, you have a higher chance to inflict "Crippled" (red cross) when attacking them. Once a unit is crippled, they can barely move, and they cannot take any action other than wait. More importantly, however, is that that's when you can capture them. Capturing gives you the enemy's whole inventory, plus some money after the chapter if the enemy was of the Imperial faction.

There's all sorts of weapons, food and skills that improve your chance to injure and/or cripple. That helps, but overall, it's a rather RNG-ish mechanic. Probably my least favorite thing about Berwick Saga. Don't think of it as Thracia's capture, it's nowhere near as reliable or fun.

It's not needed to clear the game or make any character really good due to equipment, i take it?

Nope, any important captures will be readily available, as Benice said. There's a couple of regular captures that you might really want to do (for instance, there's one playable unit whose character arc only advances after you capture a certain recurring enemy), but there are none that are absolutely required to beat the game.

Why do you dislike those characters so much? Bad writing?

Volo makes Navarre look like Serra, he's so edgy. The other four are unremarkable minibosses with generic portraits and four lines in the story outside of their battle banter. Gameplay, though... hoho, let me tell you, that's a different story. Those four are hell.

Nonononononono. There is a collector, (Erzheimer) who will pay you a chunky sum of money if you give him weird items, (he tells you which ones,) and you gte a whole bunch of events with Ward and Erzie, but no, you could complete the game without crippling any enemies.

It's kinda like the hit rates, really. It's rng-based, but you have a modicum of control over it.

In Volo's case, it is because he's the second or third best unit in the game and is an edgy myrmidon.

In Ozamarvelardimon's case, they are four enemy lance knights who have supporter, and Ozama has commander as well.

...In Berwick, Lances give at least +3 to might for each hex moved before attacking, and supporter+ commander basically makes their hit 100%, and they won't attack unless you're in the range of all four lance knights.

And they reach about 42 attack, which will OHKO basically everyone but Ward or Marcel. They are terrifying. Have fun with that, Shrimpy!

There is a way to deal with 'em, though. Feast your eyes on this.

@Shrimperor, you asked about Enid... (spoiled for size)

Spoiler

Spears and lances are actually different weapon types. Spears grant between +0 and +2 to charge, lances are +3 and up. Only a few units get access to 'em, sadly. (Lances also can't counter or be countered.)

Huh interesting.

But they both use the same weapon rank, right?

Yes-The same way Blades/Swords do, and technically Ballistae/Crossbows. (Although the unit who uses Ballistae can't use crossbows and vice versa for the units who can use crossbows.)
