For the dragons I thought "where do they go when you can't see them?", and my answer- the Sacred Realm! They successfully sealed and protected the magical parallel dimension plane from the Malice in Link Mode, but Zelda Mode has her needing to save them and the Sacred Realm from a century of corruption.

...Is that an okay counterfactual scenario? I'm not actually familiar with BotW lore and story.😅

It's an artstyle thing, I believe. Games that aimed for realism in the past were bound to suffer in the future, when technology improved and left them behind. Games with artstyles of their own, however, resisted the passage of time, because rather than trying to break through their limitations, they embraced them and molded their visuals around them. Being as cartoonish as it is, Mario really doesn't need next-gen graphics to look great.

One big reason I like those three so much is that none of the three are just mindless beasts, but have actual personalities (the fire dragon is fierce and violent, yet courageous and never reckless, the ice dragon is calm and intellectual, and the lightning dragon is quiet and honorable), and despite being antagonists, are downright likeable.
Also, I just like their collective name, the Three Spears. Each individual is named after a famous spear from various mythologies, and has an awesome title to go along with it.
The fire dragon is Trishula, the Hellfire Spear
The ice dragon is Gae Bolg, the Frozen Halberd
The lightning dragon is Gungnir, the Thunderous Javelin.

Also, also, their themes are nothing short of amazing, both their character theme and their battle theme.
You fight each of them multiple times throughout the game, Trishula even serves as the game's very first boss fight.

If you go to video settings > window settings, you can set it to 4:3 aspect ratio, which removes the stretching but adds black bars. Personally, I got used to the stretching and now it looks right to me, but to each their own.

Sounds awesome. As much as I love the dragons in BotW, the fact that they have essentially no story relevance is disappointing.

It would have been nice for them to at least have some personality, like the Great Deku Tree.

Ain't it Minas' theme? It's the one that's playing when Theodore goes to Barselphon's manor for the play. (Well, Minas' events are called Unforgettable, sooo...)

Does the event just not happen if you didn't do the citizen request, actually?

I can imagine that.
Though I can also imagine that their presence leads to a lot of fun theorycrafting by the game's fanbase (see what Interdimensional Observer wrote).

It makes for an interesting twist but i'm not actually sure if the dragons are concerned with the mortal realm. Maybe they are and they factor into Age of Calamity somehow. 

That said tho, BotW doesn't have a whole lot of lore going around in the first place so this hypothetical Zelda mode could work. Of course, this isn't taking Age of Calamity into account.

Oh absolutely. There are few times where artstyles don't age as well (Mario 64) but there's still a certain charm to be had there.
