Samson, Astram, Ogma, Caesar are the Mercs right? Then the game gives you an extra slot to use Merc with. I'm pretty sure Ymir is better than most of the candidates because he requires no work for essentially similar/better output. His bases are pretty sweet too.

Actually according to a Youtube vid I was just watching, a lot of the early ones get doubled and the later ones don't. In the Prologue though.

FE10 had a grand total of two. One in 3-12 (technically, if you count her as one) and one in 4-1.

Ever played HM? He couldn't even get a level up in prologue (nor could he double) and can't really do much in chapter 1 without Leo's Dragonshield.

I'd say that Soren is the best of them, and Ilyana isn't anywhere close. Arch Sages are pitiful in this game, as a whole, anyway.

Edward's affinity is terrible and he gets two rounded early on unless you get a Def/HP increase (both) in the first chapter... unlikely considering the lack of EXP in the first place.

because I don't think he cares enough about ranked runs... here's what I have to say.I wouldn't call him broken; he has some problems with his defenses (not HP, which he'll max out early anyway) and his early equipment sucks. You can buy him an iron axe from like chapter 13 or 14 and then give it to him, but if you don't his early AS will be terrible. If you give him one, he won't be bad... but then he has a terrible skill stat as we go further and axes are somewhat inaccurate as a whole. :/

In Part I, it isn't difficult. In Part III, she comes behind par in relation to enemy units and isn't doing that well. Sadly, not even until third tier. Ilyana will always have doubling problems except very early on.

2.6a is the better version. It's still the most updated version as of a year ago.

Black Knight's intention was clearly stated later on in the game, and FE10. To prove to himself that he could surpass/beat his master, on top of obtaining the Fire Emblem. Greil fought back out of self defense, as well as to defend his family.

I'm talking about people in general but... I really don't think everyone looks a lot into things either... because sometimes I'm guilty of "hey, this game seems cool I want to get it/try it out/etc" (I don't buy it but oh well) because of the cover art. But that's just me, anyway.

There's also the people that get impressions of the game from the front cover. First impressions do mean something, and the boxart is a form of first impression.

I use Master Crowns if they've hit Level 20 and I'm at base/they just happen to have one in their inventory. Or capping all important stats, yeah... but the latter happens to like a BEXP'd Soren, not to chars like Ike or Haar.
