Yexin
Have you ever wondered what your favorite hero's epithet means in other languages? If so, this is the place for you! Fire Emblem: Heroes is currently available in 9 languages: Japanese, English, German, Spanish (Europe), Spanish (Latin American), French, Italian, Traditional Chinese and Portuguese, each with its own epithets for every hero. Here on Serenes Forest the English language is a must, so here's my idea: I'd like to create a whole compendium of every epithet's meaning in each of the remaining 8 languages, in order to make it comprehensible by every english speaker, native or not. The task is not an easy one, and I surely can't do this on my own, so here's what you can do: if you know even just one of these 8 remaining languages, and if you have some time to kill, you can pick some epithets and translate them in english as faithfully as possible, but so that the epithet keeps its original meaning AND makes sense in English. I'll take care of the italian ones, since i'm italian, and also some of the japanese ones, given that i'm studying japanese at university, but new or updated interpretations or even better translation for one epithet is always welcome! I'll periodically update this topic following the Catalog's hero list since adding them all at once would be worse than committing suicide and, after that, I'll surely update whenever new units are added to the game, so I really hope this idea is well received, because I think something really cool and informative could come out of it. I can also accept requests about adding characters earlier than I would normally do, if you can't wait to know your favorite hero's epithets' meanings. There are only two rulea I'd like you to follow: 1) Don't use Google Translate: I'd like this topic to be as accurate as possible, and online translators aren't exaclty the most reliable thing in the world, so please post your translations ONLY if you made them yourself; 2) Don't suggest translations for languages you don't know because of apparent similarities; again, post a translation only if you know it's correct, please don't try and post one because an epithet looks very similar in two different languages and thus you think they must mean the same exact thing. This said, let's begin! eclipse
-> Asks for non-Google Translate translations -> "Spring colors" 春色 doesn't fully translate into English. A closer literal definition is "spring scenery". As for Anna, a literal translation for her Japanese epithet is "head of the secret service", but that makes no sense unless the Japanese version of the Order of Heroes is some weird clandestine operation. "Commander of the Order of Heroes" is most likely what we're looking at. Edited September 21, 2019 by eclipse
Brave Lance
I'm a linguistics major, and I'm learning both Spanish and Japanese to support it. I'm significantly further along in Spanish, however, so I'll try my hand at that. All the titles you already posted are exactly the same as the english translation, so I'll do some more. Ares: Black Knight Ares: Caballero oscuro- Ares: Dark Knight This one isn't huge, it still generally means the same thing, but maybe it was edited a little bit to clear up some confusion about the Black Knight himself, since his name is Caballero Negro. Alm: Imperial Ascent Alm: Sucesor imperial- Alm: Imperial Successor I'm starting to think that most of the Latin American translations don't have much significance. Nonetheless, it was probably changed because the english title doesn't make much sense as a title in Spanish. English is weird. Celica: Warrior Priestess Celica: Vicaria guerrera- Celica: Vicarious Warrior Vicarious is a rather interesting choice of words. It represents her actions well, but I'm not exactly sure why they chose that over priestess. Ryoma: Peerless Samurai Ryoma: Samurái sin igual- Ryoma: Samurai without equal There's no one-word translation for peerless. Byleth: Tested Professor Byleth: Profesor capaz- Byleth: capable professor It makes me sad that the pun doesn't carry over, but the meaning stays the same. Fiora: Defrosted Ilian Fiora: Iliana veraneante- Fiora: Ilian vacationer The translation's a little more boring, and doesn't necessarily match up with her personality. I'll stop now that I've gone through all the interesting red units I've summoned. I'll check back later with my blues.

"Commander of the Order of Heroes" is most likely what we're looking at. well, i said i'm still studying japanese, i'm still a beginner, so i don't expect to be too reliable for that, nor too familiar with every kanji's possible meanings, and i also said that better translations are welcome anyway, thank you very much for your help! 10 minutes ago, Brave Lance said: I'm a linguistics major, and I'm learning both Spanish and Japanese to support it. Ice Dragon
@Yexin I'm too lazy to start going through everything in Japanese, but I can quickly tell you that everything in traditional Chinese in your first post is identical in meaning to the Japanese names. As for Anna's title in Japanese, 特務機関 in context should be translated literally instead of as a single word, so instead of "secret service", you get something along the lines of "special operations". The non-lazy part of me did all of the Heroes characters in Japanese, though. I'm using the internal names for each character. (I'm bored, so I might just keep going.) Spoiler Alfons, Prince of the Kingdom of Askr アスク王国の王子 Note: Alfonse's internal name is spelled without the "e". I'm not sure where it went. Alfons, Spring-Colored Askrian Prince 春色のアスク王子 Note: I'm actually sticking with "spring-colored" instead of "spring scenery" due to parallels with other characters' titles. Sharon, Princess of the Kingdom of Askr アスク王国の王女 Sharon, Spring-Colored Askrian Princess 春色のアスク王女 Anna, Commander of the Special Forces 特務機関の隊長 Bruno, Masked Spring Rabbit 仮面の春兎 Veronica, Great Princess 大いなる皇女 Note: The word I'm translating as "princess" specially means "imperial princess" as opposed to "royal princess". Veronica, Spring-like Princess 春めく皇女 Note: Same deal with "princess". Fjorm, Princess of Ice 氷の姫 Fjorm, Ice Princess on Her New Year Shrine Visit 初詣の氷姫 Note: 初詣 (hatsumōde) is the Japanese tradition of paying a visit to a shrine on the first day of the year. Fjorm, Ice Princess Bride 氷姫の花嫁 Cerise, The Smile Within the Dream 夢の中の微笑み Note: "Cerise" is most likely a corruption of "Slidr". Cerise, The Smile of the First Dream of the Year 初夢の微笑み Note: Along with the other Japanese New Year traditions is that your first dream of the year has special significance in foreseeing your luck for the coming year. Cerise, Summer-Themed Smile 夏模様の微笑み Freeze, Prince of the Blade of Ice 氷刃の王子 Note: 氷刃 (hyōjin) means "a sword so sharp, its blade glistens like ice", but translates literally as "blade of ice". "Freeze" is a corruption of "Hrid". A standalone "h" in Japanese is rendered as an "f" due to the limitations of the Japanese syllabary. Freeze, Ice Prince of New Year's Greetings 迎春の氷王子 Note: 迎春(geishun) means "New Year's greetings" and is the name of his default sword in English. In Japanese, his weapon's name is 迎春の剣 (geishun no tsurugi), "Sword of New Year's Greetings". Yurg, Soft New-Fallen Snow 柔らかな新雪 Note: "Yurg" is a corruption of "Ylgr". The internal names of these characters are kind of amusing. Yurg, Her First Summer at the Beach はじめての夏の海 Surtr, King of Flames 炎の王 Laegjarn, Laevatein's Sheath (The Flame Sword's Sheath) 炎剣の鞘 Note: 炎剣 (enken?), literally "flame sword", is Laevatein's title. Laegjarn, Flame Princess on Her New Year Shrine Visit 初詣の炎姫 Note: Parallel with Fjorm. Laegjarn, Summer-Colored Flame Princess 夏色の炎姫 Laevatein, The Flame Sword 炎剣 Laevatein, Will Fight Using a Bamboo Rake 熊手で戦う Note: 熊手 (kumade), literally "bear paw", is the name of her weapon. It just means "bamboo rake", though. Laevatein, Summer Maiden of Flames 炎の夏乙女 Helbindi, From the Depths of Hell 地獄の底の Helbindi, From Hell's Summer 地獄の夏の Eir, Gentle Shinigami 優しき死神 Note: I'm not going to bother translating 死神 (shinigami). It's usually translated as one of "Grim Reaper", "God of Death", or "Angel of Death". (It's also Jaffar's title.) Loki, Mischievous 悪戯好き Loki, Spring Festival's Flirt 春祭りの戯れ Also some tips: Once the list gets bigger, you'll probably want to use spoiler tags, probably one per game of origin. If you're on a computer (or have a real keyboard), use Shift + Enter for a line break instead of Enter for a paragraph break in between lines for the same unit. A paragraph break comes with the unnecessary line spacing between lines whereas a line break does not. For example, these lines have a line break in between them. For example, these lines have a line break in between them. oh, ok, thank you! also yeah, i was kinda wondering about the same problem, so thanks for your tips

Roy, The Young Boy's Gift 若き少年の贈り物 Roy, The Young Lion's Sealing Flame 封炎の若獅子 Wolt, Archer of Everlasting Summer 常夏の弓兵 Lilina, Beautiful Leader 美しき盟主 Lilina, Painfully Sweet Gift 甘く切ない贈り物 Note: I'm not 100% sure about 甘く切ない (amaku setsunai), which appears to be grammatically ambiguous between "sweet, but painful" and "painful in a sweet way", but a Google search corroborates my guesses by telling me that it could be either "bittersweet" or "like the sweet dreams of a girl in puberty". Okay. So I'm guessing it's the latter. Lilina, The Beauty that Blooms on the Beach 浜辺に咲く華 Wendy, Lovely Armor Knight 可憐な重騎士 Lugh, Anima Child 理の申し子 Note: Using the localized "Anime" here referring to the magic type. Sanaki, Apostle of Begnion ベグニオンの神使 Zelgius, The Jet-Black General 漆黒の将 Note: 漆黒 (shikkoku), "jet-black", is the same "black" used in his "Black Knight", but not the same as Camus's or Ares's. Oliver, Researcher of Beauty 美の探究者 Haar, The Black Gale 黒疾風 Yune, The Awakened Goddess of Chaos 目覚めし負の女神 Note: 負 (fu) is actually "negative" rather than "chaos". In Japanese, Yune is the goddess of "negative" as the opposite of Ashera being the goddess of "positive". Chaos is simply a component of "negative" much as order is simply a component of "positive", but they make more sense in English where "positive" and "negative" don't have the same connotations. I must be really bored or something... Edited September 23, 2019 by Ice Dragon
NegativeExponents-
This sounds like fun! I remember already doing this for some characters a while back on another epithet thread because I liked them better than the english ones. Well I'll start with some favorite epithets and I'll be doing Spanish (Latin American) to English: Legion: Loco camuflado Legion: Camouflaged lunatic ---‐------------- Jagen: El veterano Jagen: The veteran ----------------- María: La princesita Maria: The little princess -------------------- Athena: Mujer mujer Athena: Woman woman --------------------- Niles: Sádico amable Niles: Friendly sadist ----------------------- Niles: Casanova Niles: Casanova ------------------------- Keaton: Lobo estrafalario Keaton: Eccentric wolf ----------------------- Charlotte: Novia interesada Charlotte: Interested bride --------------------- Subaki: Don Perfecto Subaki: Mr. Perfect ---------------------- Laslow: Rey del baile Laslow: King of the dance ------------------------ Odín: Sangre afligida Odin: Afflicted blood ------------------------ Claude: Soñador astuto Claude: Astute dreamer ------------------------ Hilda: Criada holgazana Hilda: Lazy mistress* *Long explanation about how came to translate criada into mistress ahead Spoiler Criada is a common word that would translate to maid/female servant. The problem with this is that Hilda is the exact opposite of that being a noblewoman. Criada comes from criar which can be used to describe how someone was raised so I debated having something like "raised lazily" or "grew-up lazy" but that also doesn't make sense since the Spanish epithet would be grammatically incorrect if that's the meaning they were trying to convey. I decided to look up the word on multiple online dictionaries until I came across this definition from wiktionary: "Persona que ha recibido la mejor educación y cuidados" Uso: anticuado "Person who has received the best education and care" Usage: antiquated Now, I have never read or heard of the word "criada" being used like that (likely because it's antiquated according to website) and I don't know how reliable wiktionary is but assuming this is correct then this definition fits Hilda 100% so I went along with it and translated it to mistress because it's the best word I could think of that would match up with the meaning and Hilda's character. If anyone with more knowledge could chip in on this to tell me if I'm right or wrong or what you would do differently then I'd be appreciative. Hilda has exhausted me so I'll stop now and might add more some later.

I'm pretty sure it's not colloquial. At least not in the area I'm from. I'm pretty sure I heard the phrase in the lyrics of many songs though (it's actually very common for songs to repeat a word twice like that. It rhythmic I guess Edit: although now that I think about it, it's not like that's exclusive to Spanish or anything so maybe this doesn't mean anything but I still feel likes I hear repetition like that more in Spanish songs than any other language) Mainly from old songs that my grandma listens to. Heck, judging from a quick google search it's a title for many songs. I don't know if music was their inspiration though since I don't think Athena has anything to do with music. So inspired or not it still seems nonsensical to me. Edited September 22, 2019 by NegativeExponents-
Acacia Sgt
If I may, it's probably a reference to her tendency to speak in plural when referring to herself? At least to explain the repetition. She may be "Vun Voman"; but her overuse of "Ve" (I don't know if Heroes copies it; but Shadow Dragon made her replace W's with V's; as if trying to give her an East Slavic accent) gives off a different image. Which, in my opinion, her insulting Marth over it makes it come off as quite silly... like, "Do you even hear yourself speak!?"
IGdood
Bruno 蒙面春兔 - Masked Spring Rabbit Veronica 偉大的皇女 - Great Royal Princess 皇女 denotes a princess with direct blood relation to the king/emperor. 芳春皇女 – Youthful Spring Princess Fjorm 冰之公主 – Princess of Ice Interestingly, the princess term they use here is 公主, which does not necessarily mean the princess is directly related to a ruler. 新年參拜的冰之公主 – Princess of Ice on her New Year’s Visit 冰雪的新娘 – Bride of Ice Gunnthrá 夢中的微笑 – Smile in a Dream 初夢的微笑 – The First Dream’s [of the Year] Smile 夏日光景的微笑 – The Smile of the Summer Gleam Hrid 冰刃王子 – Prince of the Ice Blade 迎春的冰之王子 – Ice Prince who Welcomes Spring [New Year’s Ice Prince] Ylgr 柔軟的新雪 – Soft New Fallen Snow 第一次的夏日海洋 – First Time at the Summer Ocean Surtr 炎之王 – King of Flame Laegjarn 炎劍之鞘 – Scabbard of the Flaming Sword 新年參拜的炎之公主 - Princess of Flame on her New Year’s Visit 夏日景緻的炎之公主 – Princess of Flame of the Summer Scene Laevatein 炎劍 – Flaming Sword 以草耙戰鬥 – Fighting with a Rake 炎夏的少女 – Young Girl of the Flaming Summer Helbindi 來自地獄深淵 – From the Depths of Hell 來自地獄之夏 – From the Summer of Hell Eir 溫柔的死神 – Gentle Deity of Death Loki 調皮搗蛋 – Mischievous Troublemaker 春祭嬉戲 – Spring Festival Frolicker
NegativeExponents-
@Humanoid @Acacia Sgt Ok I think I know why Athena has the epithet Her ending in Spanish is titled Mujer, mujer. So that's where the epithet comes from. I don't why it's titled that but it is. It doesn't seem to be a phrase that's brought up anywhere in the game outside of her ending. 42 minutes ago, Acacia Sgt said: If I may, it's probably a reference to her tendency to speak in plural when referring to herself? At least to explain the repetition. She may be "Vun Voman"; but her overuse of "Ve" (I don't know if Heroes copies it; but Shadow Dragon made her replace W's with V's; as if trying to give her an East Slavic accent) gives off a different image. Which, in my opinion, her insulting Marth over it makes it come off as quite silly... like, "Do you even hear yourself speak!?" After reading her SD dialogue in Spanish, I can say that plural thing is an English localization thing only. Or it's at least not present in the Spanish version. She still speaks strangely but no plural. So it'd be weird to reference that when it's absent in the Spanish version. I think it might be something like a title. You know like lady gaga with lady being the title and gaga being the descriptor but instead of gaga it's lady lady? Idk, that's the way I see it now. Javi Blizz
The Athena's issue hasn't either any sense in European Spanish (excluding that is from SD, as said before). From the ones that I have from Askr: Spoiler Alfonse, Príncipe de Askr -> Prince of Askr Sharena, Princesa de Askr -> Princess of Askr Sharena, Princesa vernal -> Spring princess Anna, Comandante -> Commander Veronica, Princesa Audaz -> Brave Princess (In Pokemon Audaz is translated as Brave too, so I guess is the best translation) Fjorm, Princesa glaciar -> Glaciate princess Gunnthrá, Voz de ensueño -> Dream's voice Ylgr, Deshielo estival -> Summer's snowbreak Surtr, Rey Ígneo -> Fire King Laegjarn, Acero Envainado -> Sheated Steel Laegjarn, Princesa festiva -> Festive princess Laevatein, Acero ardiente -> Burning steel Laevatein, Luz calcinadora -> Incinerative Light Helbindi, Azote salvaje -> Wild scourge Eir, Muerte Piadosa -> Pious death Loki, La embautadora -> The fooler Loki, Embustera vernal -> Spring liar I hope this proves useful! Ice Dragon
With Astram officially released, here's his: Astria, Hero of Akaneia アカネイアの勇者 I've also made a small update to vanilla Nino's and vanilla Tharja's translations (since you haven't gotten that far yet). I might go back and clean up a few others to be a bit less stiff at some point. Rinea's "Dancer of Reminiscence", for example, could probably be "Reminiscing Dancer". Diovani Bressan
You should update Marth: Altean Prince 's epithet, because you used the Groom Marth's epithet for the OG Marth.
Yexin
i'd have already done that, if that captcha problem didn't stop me when i press "edit", the captcha page pops up and asks me to verify that i'm not a robot (always found this stupid), only to get redirected to the editing page, with no results
Diovani Bressan
Yeah... the Captcha problem is annoying everyone in this forum. I took 1 hour to create the Voting Gauntlet Topic, something that is pretty fast to do.
