Time is a limited resource, and it is impossible for a person to play every videogame that exists in anyone's lifetime, not to mention the money. You need priorities, and some degree of certainty that you'll enjoy the next game you play. So I find it perfectly understandable to drop a series if you've been severely disappointed by the last few releases and have reason to expect the next ones will be the same. I also find it perfectly understandable to drop a game if you're a ways in and still aren't enjoying it - videogames work on loops, they're not likely to magically change or lose whatever problems you have with them if you've already stuck with them for a few hours.

At the risk of upsetting you further... yes, it's true, but then, "you never know until you try". Hence not exact science. Every case is unique. So you must ask yourself if you want to take that risk.

Indeed, that is correct. How you go about choosing is, of course, is up to you. You can look at footage of the game, reviews of the game, descriptions of the game, etc. and determine, to a degree, if it seems like something that you'd enjoy. Some people even pirate games and if they like them, they buy them later to support the devs. But when the time comes to invest an amount of money and hours into a game, you're obviously going to feel more inclined to do so if you go into it with some certainty that it's your kinda game.

“Official manga” doesn’t make it canon Shrimp-kun, a writer/artist adapting the video game to another media can take liberties. If the opposite was true Engage would have actually had a functional plot and main character.

Olaf means business.😎

Pretty simple, easy map. Small, rather narrow, the terrain completely discombobulated. It kkinda suits Lash with all the hills.

Day 5. Central base secured, map is fundamentally won. Spamming Infantry with the occasional Mech from the north, Tanks and a single Rocket from the center.

Aww... Olaf is a dog lover.🐶

-And who are you to complain about using Black Hole stuff? Sturm was bankrolling your invasion of Orange Star! (I'm sure Grit thought this but didn't say it.)

I had Olaf pop his CO Power b/c why not? A unique quote for this specific battle? Fully-voiced too, that's nice!🌨️

Won in 16 days.

I know I skipped over the opening dialogue. Yet against the soft Blue Moon Theme, this scene was rather touching. Weird given how dang lighthearted AW can be, but here there was a moment of poignancy.🙂

Now onto Gri-

Kanbei! I decided to rotate between between Blue Moon and Gold Comet, since both campaigns unlock at the same time.

They de-Emperor'ed Kanbei. "Leader", but no specific title. 

TBF, "Emperor" was a little odd. Japan's imperial dynasty has reigned but has not ruled since... pre-Heian (pre-794AD)? Maybe the blink-and-you-miss-it Kenmu Restoration? The late-Heian period's Cloistered/Retired Emperors?

Emperor was odd given any lack of mention of it in AW1, so its removal here is fine.

And no matter what Kanbei is...

...He is at his very best in Black Hole Rising.😁 Since Sturm was upgraded to +20 Firepower and Defense no strings attached, Kanbei was brought up to +30% Firepower and Defense, while still at only +20% unit cost. Samurai Spirit makes him almost unassailable for one turn. He crazy good, if with the attempt at balance.

Pretty easy battle, an introduction to Missile Silos. The enemy is guaranteed two, but you work to deny them the all-important center and its six silos.

This is actually my second attempt at the map. I wasn't happy with the first.

Build order was: Day 1- One Infantry, Day 2- APC, Day 3- Two Infantry, thus this the fourth turn. Only 4k starting income and Kanbei's more expensive units forces this stringent build order.

Day 7. Just perfect. The center island is secured. (If only the AI sent its own APC towards the island instead of unnecessarily northward.)

The Recon was built alongside the Infantry to try distracting the enemy Missile Silos from the APC, both were successfully distracted.😄

The Recon was actually useful in combat too, usually they're garbage outside of FoW and I don't build them. But a Kanbei Recon is different.

Two damage to an APC from a full-health Tank. Maybe it Flak triggered his negative luck. Or maybe it was just Kanbei's 30 Def bonus + 30 from terrain that made this laughable hit happen.😄

Flak, considering luck bypasses Defense, should actually be a decent Kanbei semi-counter. But he got screwed by this easy map. 

Beautiful use of a Missile Silo, which have appropriately hefty sound effects.

No DUH! You messed with Kanbei!😛

And as with Olaf's first, a 16-day win.

Gold Comet began its liberation campaign in the south of the country, Blue Moon chose the center. Now, the Moon takes action

directly southwest.

Re-Boot loves having Olaf shout at Grit. That voice clip gets a lot of mileage.

So it's going to be a Battle Before Dawn?😉

Or, if you utter the phrase immediately before or after saying any insult towards anyone, it makes the insult superficially polite 😃, no matter how vicious the insult actually is.

Getting called the mortal enemy of the laid-back guy. Yep, Adder really messed up here. Feels like he might've had the slightest brief glimmer of a chance if he had trimmed out the middle of his persuasion banter.

Me posting 90% of the conversations says how much I've always been fond of this one, ever since I was a child.😄

The map itself is harder than the three-star difficulty suggests. The enemy outnumbers you, no deployment facilities. Not a single direct combat unit stronger than a Recon. The map forces you to utilize Grit's strengths, which I kinda like.

Now he has a daily Firepower bonus, despite a CO Power nerf. Actually, did AW2 Super Snipe always provide the same Firepower as Snipe Attack? I know Dual Strike gave SS more. Actually means he has less Firepower under SCOP than during his COP in AW1, but a daily boost is more than satisfactory compensate.

As for Snakey...

Lies! These lies were written long ago, and they're still falsehoods. His AI is no better than anyone else's, his CO Powers fill up no faster than anyone else. The fact is, he is merely a pure vanilla CO with the only 2-dot CO Power in the game, and his SCOP is also a absolute minimal 5-dot cost. And all his powers do is +1/2 Movement to all units.

Still, for him, blustery boasting of abilities he doesn't have sounds appropriate.

I lost a Rocket to the Mechs that didn't show up until later, and one of the two Artilleries too. I could've played this better. But I still won on Day 7, short, but tight.

Successfully commands a dangerous battle while not fully-rested, Grit be good.

One last battle, the Gold Comet war effort crawls northward. And Adder returns to the country he is supposed to be invading after having lost all those heavy tanks to a guy who had none.

The fortress is just a bunch of terrain you can't move onto, surrounded by eight Mini Cannons that deal 3 nonfatal damage to one enemy within range each turn, boring. Destroy all 8 or capture the enemy HQ to win.

The enemy begins with 28 units to your zero, but have no deployment facilities and can easily be denied access to any. Since you do have bases, you're guaranteed to win in the long term, as long as you keep the two forward neutral bases out of enemy hands. As a child, this map discouraged me b/c of the early onslaught and I gave up very early more than once, I know better now.

FoW ofc b/c Sonia is in charge, FoW is her specialty.

Stronger counterattacks? That sounds new, did they actually buff a CO in Re-Boot Camp?🤔 Why only her?

Day 5 situation. I remembered the Bomber in the shadows, hence the two Anti-Airs.

Adder wasn't being as damaging as he could've. He was obsessed with Infantry and ignored my vehicles, he particularly wanted to deny me the capture of that neutral city next to three allied ones. I was afraid all the Infantry losses would ruin my Technique score here.

Unfortunately, once the initial wave of aggressors is taken out, the map enters a long boring phase as you try to find the hidden Lab map and take out the Mini Cannons.

Day 23 I get the secret lab map and destroy the last Mini Cannon, victory. (The enemy captured the neutral northern Seaport and used it to... churn out six useless Landers, and only one Battleship! The latter the sole naval unit with any usefulness on this map. But then, the AI probably isn't smart enough to conclude landing operations aren't needed at all here.)

Managed to get a perfect 300 Score. Surprised on both the Speed and Technique fronts.

Adder has no (bad) chemistry of any kind with Sonia, but then, that isn't a surprise. Her Black Hole bond lay with another.😉

And yet ironically, it was the second easiest level on the cup. Hardest was probably the last one. 14:14 hurt me as much watching it now as it did last night. Funny how Princia was the one who almost snatched victory from me. Girl got a taste of glory a year ago and didn't want to give it up.

Anyways, the game does seem to confirm that there aren't any "routes". No funny Tactics Ogre shenanigans. But that doesn't mean there isn't a degree of choice

As expected, some enemies will be recruitable although they might all be Shura cases. Now I wonder if there will also be a Samson/Arran case or if some character's recruitments depend on another being alive (I don't think permadeath is a thing here).
